How playable?
I know it's still the big gold book and that it has no current developer, but is it still updated and usable with all the changes happening with FGU?

You can run a game if that is what you are asking.

It should be. It's supported in maintenance mode, so any issues should still be fixed by SmiteWorks. If there are any issues, report them via the normal support channels.
What you may not get is functionality implemented in mainstream rulesets that many take for granted as standard FG functionality - i.e. some of the functionality originally programmed in this ruleset may seem dated. But, yes, you should be able to run a game.FG Wiki: How to Compile the FG Logs
Private Messages: My inbox is forever filling up with PMs. Please don't send me PMs unless they are actually private/personal messages. General FG questions should be asked in the forums - don't be afraid, the FG community don't bite and you're giving everyone the chance to respond and learn!

If you buy the ruleset make sure that you read the documentation in the docs directory. It's old but still valid when it comes to create your own campaign settings. The BRP ruleset is one of the easiest rulesets to mod (IMHO), and it's designed to be so.
