Latest Installer Links
Windows Install (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe)
Mac OSX Install (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.pkg)
NOTE: If you are still having update issues, then follow these steps:
1. Uninstall or delete your FGU application folder; then re-install using link above.
On Windows, the FGU app folder defaults to: C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\
2. If you are still having problems with the updater after complete uninstall/reinstall, please provide the following file:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\LocalLow\SmiteWorks\FG UpdaterEngine\Player.log
Summary
We had several update server issues last week, as well as an updater build that got stuck. We worked through the weekend to address, and all the latest files appear to be working as expected as of Saturday evening. If you are still having issues, then see the steps above.
While we've increased limits all around our servers and their networks as well as this latest updater fix, the servers are still overloaded based on current demand; so you may get some time-outs from time to time.
We are continuing to keep an eye on the situation, and looking at ways to improve our servers even more.

Why dont you update version nos of the files so we can report issues against specific versions. A friend tried downloading for last two days updater said V4.0.0 and it timed out. I tried downloading new and got same issue, but my existing program already installed had no problems. Now the new updated version that appears to be working still says 4.0.0, why not 4.0.1a (a for alphas) and when release full version drop the a or something.) who cares if it gets to 4.0.1064a or whatever at least we know we have a specific update installed.

The version has a date. Such as 4.0.0 (03-25-20). The date is the tell tale.

So the Updater engine V4.0.0 (No date) corresponds to the launcher version V4.0.0 dated

Mmmhh, doesn't work, i don't get it.
I redownloaded the updater from the OP link but i think it's the same (v4.0.0, i don't have any date)
I tried a complete uninstall of the FGU Updater, i deleted the old webinstaller, cleaned every temporary directory of Windows, restarted the system, redownloded the webinstaller... but i always have the same version of the updater  with the 10sec timeout...

Hello all,
Maybe there's a suggestion thread for that (please point me to it) but why can't we just select the game systems we need prior to downloading ? I'm writing this looking at my Updater struggling downloading game systems I will never use.

Please uninstall the application before reinstalling. Something doesnt seem to update when you install over the top of the current buggy versions.

FWIW, I had the buggy installer from early in the week, kept timing out on files over about 10MB, realized yesterday the updater was stuck in a loop and that I was going to have to delete my macOS Applications/Smiteworks folder (which Mac users as a rule Do Not Do) and reinstall from scratch. After that I saw I'd gone from v4.0.0 (2020-03-20) to v4.0.0 (2020-03-26). So you had and have the current version - for now. Perhaps going forward they will be better about telling us what the current build is.

March 28th, 2020, 11:34
You cannot see the build until you have actually installed; so for those having issues installing for the first time and not getting past the installer it will always just be v4.0.0. For those already installed and are having an issue updating then the version you have will be shown as v4.0.0 (date).

I just checked for updates this morning. The updater updated itself, then went to check all the files. No time outs during update and it checked files fast with little to no pauses so updater seems back to normal for me!

Knowing what build you should have is a useful troubleshooting tool. Especially when the last word on the latest build announcement is "this isn't compatible with earlier versions," you really want to know whether you have the new version or not. Right now a lot of people are downloading someone's (2020-03-24) build from Google Drive. If my (2020-03-26) build won't play with that (and my best guess is that it won't), I think a lot of frustration and running in circles is likely if people don't know what version their installer should be giving them.
(I was stalled at (2020-03-20), so perhaps people who obtain the (2020-03-24) build won't have the same broken-updater issue I had. I can say that knowing that (2020-03-20) wasn't the current build anymore would have helped me troubleshoot my broken updater and saved the server a bit of load from my updater's halting and repeated-over-days attempts to update things.)
You cannot see the build until you have actually installed; so for those having issues installing for the first time and not getting past the installer it will always just be v4.0.0. Yeah I am wondering about that version date thing. After I use the 2020-03-24 webinstaller (note it is not my build but a download from FG site of 2020-03-24) and it updates correctly FG will still give a build date of 2020-03-26 once launched (yesterday at least). So that date people are talking about seems to be the build date of FGU application. NOT any build number of the webinstaller itself.
Maybe it would be usefull if the webinstaller has somkind of build identifier aswell.

Yesterday's report:
After reinstalling windows and everything on a new SSD drive yesterday, I experienced the same issues all of yesterday.
After downloading the FGU web installer and running it. The updater would start downloading something, then instead of continuing and finishing that download it would timeout.
It would then try something else and return to the cancelled download later.
Some things would download, but larger items like the Fantasy Grounds exe, Savage Worlds, Vortex Games etc. would often start, get a few megabytes then the bar would move to show it complete, but the message would say there was a timeout.
This went on for hours yesterday (EU time from day into the night) and it never completed.
Today's report, the good news:
I tried again today. Running the updater from the fresh install yesterday behaved similarly today as before, timeouts into an endless loop of uncompleted downloads.
However, after removing the files that came with the web installer from yesterday. Then downloading the newest one today and installing again.
This time the updater worked like a charm, and I have everything updated, FGU up and running again, and the lobby visible after running FGU once.
ps. The first time I opened up FGU before starting a campaign, the lobby wouldn't update and I got an error message saying as much. Don't know if it was a lobby server reboot taking place at that precise time or if I needed to open up a campaign once before it would actually show.

The new installer did indeed solve the timeout issues, and did install correctly.
But it looks like, in fixing one thing, another problem has been created? I hope this is fixed soon, but according to FG Support, my order for half a dozen Savage Worlds Books, modules, etc are just not available on the new patch server. And there's no ETA for resolution.
Has anyone else seen recent orders not downloading (Savage Worlds or otherwise)?

Because of the connection problems our party tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. While it worked fine for 3/4 of us, one of the players couldn't get the new installer/updater to work as it didn't finish the update (failed-retry in 10 sec-or something like that). Meanwhile, the original updater he downloaded 10 days ago works like a charm for him. The rest of our group installed the new updater fine. Any ideas on the issue?

After launch it it seems enter into a loop: i close the updater after i've got the error message, and after 30 seconds or so, it opens again and continue, close and open. Is there any official statement on how to tell if we're running the most recent version? I know there was a new build pushed over the weekend. I haven't uninstalled/reinstalled but I did just appear to successfully update, and FGU is now reading v4.0.0 Ultimate (2020-02-36). That is the date of the most recent patch note, but MoonWizard posted here on the 29th saying there was a new version? Is this not pushed live yet? Or is reinstall mandatory? The fact that everything is called v4.0.0 seems unnecessarily complicated...

I just deleted my installed directory (X:/FantasyGrounds on my system) and ran the installer in Post #1 from this thread. It ran to completion, appeared to get everything it needed. I then ran it again just to be sure, and sure enough it updated Fantasy Grounds again. On the third update it didn't appear to find anything to update. It appears to still be running Fantasy Grounds v4.0.0 Ultimate (2020-02-36). Not sure if that is correct, or in any way different from the version I had prior to deleting the contents of the folder and reinstalling. Hard to tell what version number refers to which build.

Unclear whether there's an issue or not. When running my weekly game last Thursday we encountered a number of connection issues so I'm trying to identify how to communicate to my players and ascertain whether we're all on the latest build. Do we all need to uninstall/reinstall? It would appear not - as I get the 3/26/2020 build either way. Attached my player.log in case that's helpful to you.
I want to continue trying to run my weekly sessions in FGU to help squash bugs, last week there was a lot of uncertainty with the updater server being jammed. This week, I figure if I can get us all on the same version hopefully our feedback and log files will potentially be helpful.

The FGU main client latest build is v4.0.0 (2020-03-26). We are working on adding the build date to the updater as well. Once we get to final initial release, we will begin incrementing the version numbers as well.
Are you actually having a problem with the updater; or are you referring to connection issues, which I'm looking at in another thread?
(If updater issues, I can pass log to updater developer.)
Thanks,

I'm trying to reconcile build numbers to prevent connection issues. I believe my last session was abnormally buggy because the server was congested and we had some version mismatch.
To this end, I was trying to figure out what the current build is and whether I need to get my players to reinstall or not prior to my session on Thursday. It sounds like the updater build is not visible to the user and we shouldn't worry about it unless we're having issues? I assume if all my players are on the same "main client build" there should be no connection issues due to version mismatch, and we should have the current network code.
Moon Wizard
March 31st, 2020, 19:31
Ryan has said that he will work on placing the build date on the updater this week; so you'll be able to visually check soon. For now, assume it is up to date. As long as you are all on the same client build, I wouldn't worry about it.
The connection issues are something I am investigating this week.

[I'm on Win 10 Pro 64 bit] EVERYTIME I launch FGU as a NON ADMIN user, the Check For Updates button is highlighted in red, and until I push it (and check for updates) my campaigns do not show in the select campaign list.
("Everytime" means literally everytime, even if I launched two minutes before)
I don't have this issue if I launch FGU as an Administrator: it works normally (the button isn't red everytime).
I already uninstalled Fantasy Ground Unity. Deleted all the folders (including data folder). Downloaded and installed latest versions. Updater shows v4.0.0 (2020-03-31). Same problem. (I tried the uninstalling/installing both with Admin and Non Admin user).
Attached is the Player.log, but I didn't find it in: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\LocalLow\SmiteWorks\FG UpdaterEngine\Player.log
I found in ...AppData\LocalLow\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\Player.log
Not shure if its the same.

@JediSwet74,
The uninstall should not affect the FGU data folder (unless the app folder and data folder are exactly the same). You can always make a copy of your existing FGU data folder; then copy back over the campaigns folder, and any custom images/tokens, after re-install.
@alessandro,
I'll forward your situation to our updater developer, Ryan, to see what he can suggest.
Thanks,

Thanks for the response. I am on a Mac, so could you please tell me what would constitute the entire FGU data folder on a Mac and I’ll make a copy of that before the re-installation process. Thanks in advance.

Your data folder is in your user account main folder, in a folder called Smiteworks. (At least that's where mine is.)
This is in contrast to the application folder, which is in the applications folder, in a completely separate folder also (inexplicably) called Smiteworks.

You can always find the FG Data folder on any platform by clicking the folder icon on the FG launch screen.
The data and application are stored in separate locations intentionally. The Data folder is something users will commonly go into to add community extensions, modules purchased from the DMsGuild, or to add image and tokens assets. Also the FG Data folder should be backed up.
The FG applications folder is something you should not have to go into. You do not need to (normally) backup. You should not be altering files in it. In 5 years of using FG I have never gone into the applications folder more than once or twice, but I go into the Data folder almost daily.

I was blocked by my ISP recently and had no issue prior. It might be this;
I don't know if this will fix anyone's connection issues, but, Cox, Xfinity, Comcast, Charter, and Spectrum, along with AT&T have gone to an advanced security system that supposedly protects your IP address from flooding that comes from DDOS cyber attacks. This protection scheme often thinks that the incoming connections are attacks, and it blocks the players from connecting to your table. I always had port forwarding working, and then all the sudden, it stopped. I read an article in the FG forums, by chance and luck. I spent a couple days redoing things prior to reading the information I stumbled across. I had to actually go to my personal account settings within Comcast's website and disable my advanced protection settings. Comcast never informed me of this newer protection system. As soon as I turned that off, back to normal. However, every 30 days I have to go in an repeat the process, as it resets with each new billing cycle. The settings might be called something slightly different by your provider, but it's a flood control. You will need to know what it's referred to as on your account portal, by mine was entitled Advanced Security. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?53461-Comcast-XFinity-and-Cox-Users-Important
https://internet.xfinity.com/more/my-services/my-services-disabling
This has ALSO stopped me from being able to update via FGU, and at that point, I thought it was the new Networking server, but it turns out it was on my internet provider. I was being blocked from my provider, Comcast too. So, with this and the all the newness , I think this is becoming the perfect store for confusion and delay.

Ok, here's what's happening.
By default, FGU installs on mac to /Applications/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds/ which is a location only manageable by an admin.
User Data is, by default stored to ~/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds
~ indicates that it's the currently logged-in user's home directory.
So if you log in as two different users, they will each have their own copy of the data folder
/Users/[adminUsername]/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds
/Users/[nonAdminUsername]/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds
To compound this, the settings files are also stored on a per-user basis
/Users/[adminUsername]/Library/SmiteWorks/fantasygrounds.conf
/USers/[nonAdminUsername]/Library/SmiteWorks/fantasygrounds.conf
The main trouble here is that the updater needs to be able to update itself and Fantasy Grounds during the update process, and since files are stored to /Applications/... the program needs admin access to operate.
Of course, since the updates are going to the home directory of the currently logged-in user, all of the content will be, in this case, updated to the admin user's home directory.
I've got a task to add an option to install FG on a per-user basis rather than for all users, but for the time being, my best recommendations are to run fantasy grounds on an admin user's account.
If this is not possible, or not desireable, Fantasy Grounds can be launched on a non-admin user's account and update properly if launched from a command line process with admin elevation
Terminal:
sudo open /Applications/SmiteWorks/Fantasy\ Grounds/FantasyGroundsUpdater.app
Barring these options, You could try
1: On an Admin account, open settings > advanced settings, and change the App Directory to something like
/Users/[nonAdminUsername]/Applications/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds
2: Close Updater/settings program
3: Move /Applications/SmiteWorks to /Users/[nonAdminUsername]/Applications/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds
4: If your campaigns are in the admin user's home folder:
4a: Copy /Users/[adminUsername]/Applications/SmiteWorks to /Users/[nonAdminUsername]/SmiteWorks
5: Log out of admin user, log into non-admin user
6: Open Fantasy Grounds from non-admin's home folder (~/Applications/SmiteWorks/Fantasy\ Grounds/FantasyGrounds.app
7: If all goes well, your settings should now be pointing at the non-admin user's data
Note: With this step, there is still a static located configuration file that FGU uses for app location
/Library/Preferences/SmiteWorks/fantasygrounds.conf
This is where the App directory setting is, so it requires permission if you every want to change location again.
Long story short, at the moment, FGU is designed to be run on an admin account, and can only update with admin permissions.
The best option if you are not running on an admin account, is to launch Fantasy Grounds or the Updater as admin using the terminal, as that should allow you to update.

Thanks redeyesofnight. I'll run FGU as an administrator for now :-)
(The issue only presented a few day ago. Before that the Update Button worked correctly)
A good solution for me would be if it worked as in FGC: I run FGC as a normal user and when I click "Check for Updates", the system ask me the Administrator password to proceed.

I am using Mac OS 10.13.6. I have confirmed that I am able to log into the fantasy ground website with my username and password.
However, the application fails to save my login info. And the connection times out.
All it ever says is logging in. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the application various times.
The update engine also manages to connect and download updates when I tell it to update.
Additionally, once I put my user name and password and select login, the CANCEL and SAVE buttons are not responsive, only the UNINSTALL button is able to be selected. It also allows me to switch tabs between BASIC, ACCOUNT, ADVANCED.
No matter what I do, it never logs in.

Hi,
Have played about two sessions with my players, I find most features work and are very happy with the beta progress.
I find that if run the maps without LOS it works great, but get black screens for players when players are placed in LOS map
Should I place he characters in the map before turn on LOS?
Not sure if this has been requested?
It would be great for DM to test the players line of sight with in the DM view.
Other software (no names) uses a hot key to show the characters LOS view which allows the DM to test what each character can see.
Thanks

@pixellating,
I've forwarded to our updater developer to see if he has ideas.
@Winseral,
For new questions (this thread is for updater issues), please post in a new thread.
Here are some answers to your questions:
* You should make sure that you place PCs/NPCs in the combat tracker first; then place them on the map from the combat tracker. This allows all the pieces to link up correctly in terms of player ownership of tokens for LoS.
* Also, you can click on any token as a GM to see it's current LoS (or select a set of tokens).
* Additionally, you can start a second instance of FGU to connect to your own server in order to see the player view of what their UI looks like.

This sounds like a common issue for some users on Comcast/Xfinity.
Please see if any of the information in this thread helps.

My internet service Provider is Mercury.net
My internet access is through radio signal, not traditional cable like Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Shaw Communication. There is a dish on my roof that points to a tower about 2 miles away.
The problem is the login part of the updater. I am able to get the updater to download updates. So I don't think the port forwarding is an issue. The updater engine, freezes, none of the buttons work except for the uninstall one. Save and Cancel are unresponsive. And the values I put into the login user name field and password field isn't saved. It will also let me switch tabs between Advanced and syncing accounts and login
I will give the port forwarding a try, as well as attempting to reinstall on an admin user account on my mac.

I installed FGU on an admin account and my ISP opened up my modem to permit port forwarding directly to my computer. They enabled DMZ on the router and had me input my mac MAC address into DHCP static lease 1 Mac Address, and my mac ip into DHCP static lease 1 IP address and DMZ IP. Then hooked up my mac mini to the router with ethernet. They told me this should permit port 1802 to function.
But I am still having the same problem. I also noticed that when ever I do an install, it never gives me the option to select the file destination, could that have something to do with it? Is it possible there is something wrong with my account on your end?
I took a screen shot of my router settings, but am reluctant to post it here. I don't know if I can dox my self that way.

1. Updater 20-04-06 won't download updates and stays frozen on "app permissions" indefinitely.

Hey there, I’m sorry you’re having troubles!
First question, are you running on an account with admin permissions? Currently the Fantasy Grounds update process works best if you are running as an admin user, though we are working on a fix to make it easier to run on a non-admin account.
If you are not on an administrator account, I would recommend trying the software on an admin account if at all possible.
If this is not possible or you are already running on an administrator account, I’ll do my best to help you get up and running!

I have this same issue and it took us awhile to work out exactly what was going on as I could move the tokens around as GM and with a second "player" instance running on same PC and my brother remotely could not. It turned out his map was set to background and mine wasn't at the time.
We further worked out that if map is popped out you can interact with the tokens. If you set map to background no one can interact with the tokens. If you click the maximize again you can interact with the tokens again but lose the chat window and the side buttons. See screenshots for what I mean...

After launching the patcher of FGU today it first of all updated the patcher itself and after this I got that..

Using "Fix Permissions" did not do anything for after pressing somehow nothing happened.
Started the application in admin mode afterwards but nothing changed as well.
Any idea but reinstall? ;-)

Hi, I experience a similar issue when updating.
First, as allways I get the message from UAC that Fantasy grounds wants to update, I select yes.
Then, fantasy ground updater reports that it does not have write access, and also asks for access. Selecting yes does not make this messgae go away. But behind this message from fantasy grounds updater, I see that fantasy grounds is updating all the modules. When I select settings the same thing happens, and afterwards I am not able to change my settings.
I posted this issue in a wrong thread before ( the pre announcement thread), but I do not know how to remove it there.

But the FGU works (enter a campaing, etc). Still, can't do any update or change the settings.

Hopefully after running an update as administrator, you should no longer have to do that in the future.
I'm not sure exactly what state you got stuck in, but the new paradigm is to not run as Administrator. If you still have to, then others may be having the same issue and we should try to pinpoint what's going awry.

I got that `Permission`message and I got error message FG not being able to save the settings after that I just downloaded the new Web installer. So far everthing seems to work (campaigns not lost, settings are their, launcher works) apart that it seems to be stuck on version 2020-04-15. Also launching the updater manually make it checking the packages but does no update. So is 2020-04-15 now the correct version or do I have to do something else and what? Or can I simply be patient and wait for another update because as I told everything works fine on this version (create campaigns, add LOS, login to a hosted game) and so I don´t have to mess up with all that computer thingis. Also added the recent .log-files and also some pics.

Updater should use admin rights for installing software ("program files") and user rights for installing content packages (user directory or "program data"), simple as that. This is how Hero Lab Classic and myriads of other software works and it works well!
Please do not ignore years of well established standards.

Thanks,

With the new update, I got stuck right after clicking the update button. The only choice is to click cancel. The message is something about the new updater being install. When I try ro click on update again, theire a meesage error saying that the updater file doesn't exist anymore in the path :

[4/30/2020 11:49:16 PM] [<color="red">ERROR</color>] Updater: Unable to locate program (C:/Program Files/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds/FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe)
I went into that directory and found a new folder called ''FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW''. Inside that folder, there's the new updater. I ran it and it works.
BUT, I still get the above error mesage when I try to run the update for the Fantasy Grounds main page. I also tried to move the file in the new folder to the old folder (since I think it will fix the issue, but I can't becasue of an admin right error message).
At least I can update manually and play the game with the last version.

I don't use OneDrive, but the OneDrive folder is there. I don't have a clue why it thinks it should use this folder. I installed it in D:\Games\Fantasy Grounds Unity. Found this in the known issues:
[FGUUPDATE-7] - Installing to non-standard directory prevents updater from running after initial install
Repared it for now by copying both FantasyGroundsUpdater and the FGUpdaterEngine folder to the expected location. The updater is now starting without issues. Trying to find the what I should change to use the correct location. It's usually in the registry somewhere.
Found it in:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wind ows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Compatibility Assistant\Store.
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\S ervices\bam\State\UserSettings\S-1-5-21-3426030293-453725757-3251000860-1002

Each time there are two entries:
...\OneDrive\Desktop\FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe
...\OneDrive\Desktop\FGUpdaterEngine\FGUpdaterEngi ne.exe
Tried changing the keys, but was only able to change Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wind ows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Compatibility Assistant\Store. That one seems a result, not a cause. Restarted FG and things are working now. I assume the entire Registry quest was unnecessary, running it once with the files on the expected location will do. Will reinstall to test this.
Since the app is called Fantasy Grounds in add/remove programs, and I have classic on it as well, reinstall was a bit scary. Please use a different name for FGU than for FGC, for the executable as well. Otherwise I'll have two different programs, with the same name, from the same developer, with different checksums, different working directories, etc.
Tried a reinstall, no issues, but it remembers too much info like my account and the location of the data folder, so it's not a valid test. Where does it store this data? Will stop my quest for info for now.

inside that there is an updater which works
run that it starts the install process

Previous update was Wednesday morning for both FGC and FGU and then did I updated FGU again just now. Last Wednesday's update were both fine, but this update of FGU wiped out my FG Classic desktop shortcut and replaced it with an FG U shortcut (which already existed).
No problem to recreate it, but none of the FGU updates did anything to the old FGC shortcut before. Looks like a new problem.

For me, it helped to copy the updater and the FGUpdaterEngine folder from where they actually are to the place where they are expected to be. Things started working again, and I could even remove the extra copies. Not sure if this will work for you though.
BIG QUESTION Asked by a group of my friends who want to use your program. WHY DOES THIS PROGRAM KEEP BREAKING.
It's a Beta. The developers are not out to get you, but there are quite a few configurations out there. So things will break.

I hadn't ran an update in a while but today gave me a scare because I had both FGC and FGU shortcut icons on my desktop and when I updated FGU it took the liberty to update the FGC icon and pathing to point to FGU. For a moment I thought it had destroyed my classic installation which is in a totally different directory.
Turns out I just had to go to the folder with FGC and remake the shortcut (deleting the now duplicate FGU shortcut) but I'm not sure if that's the behavior you want to leave in place.

For about the last two months, when I try to update my Fantasy Grounds and there is a new Installer update, the installer will download and not be able to read/write and then it gets corrupt. Without the installer, I can't update and can't uninstall the program. I have to use Revo Uninstaller every week, then restart my PC, then install, then log-in, then update. If you could look into it as it is super annoying, I would appreciate it.

Operating system (and version)? What do the installer and updater logs show? Is your anti-virus or security software quarantining FG? Do your system logs show anything?

Windows 10 x64. The log says it it downloads it and and comping compiler and then it hangs (for ever, I mean 30 + minutes and does nothing.). What happens it is updater is deleted and as it extracting the new updater it appears to be losing the read/write access or the file is in use so the system does not let it be written. And no my anti-virus is not causing the issue, no logs or pop-ups and also it works when I re-install every time. And not sure what system logs you would want me to review. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi,
Apologies in advance for lack of log files, but the player that encountered the issue below is not the most computer savvy. Attached screen shot does show two separate (though possibly related) issues. The error in red is the message that appears when the player attempted to connect to my server. The log file is what automatically popped up when he clicked the check for updates button.
Additional Details:
- Player FGU Mac v2020-04-17 (I think, don't recall exact version # but it was the same as other players and DM) with demo license
- DM FGU Win10 v2020-04-17
- Player was able to connect fine 20 minutes before
- 2 other players were able to connect just fine
- Force closing and/or rebooting didn't resolve the issue
We eventually all updated to the latest version of the client and Player was able to resolve the issue (with the aid of his teenage son :) ) by manually downloading FGU updater from website.
Again, apologies for screenshot only, but that's all I got but hopefully it provides enough to work with.
(Fun fact, best bug report I got from a customer was when I asked them to Copy/Paste the error message on the screen. Instead, the took a screenshot, printed it, and faxed it to me)

Riding a Mac Catalina (version 10.15.4). When I click "Check for Updates" in red, it closes the application. Same thing if I click on Settings. I was on the 4.0.0 Free version, trying to hit settings to put in my Ultimate license. No Bueno!
Any idea when this will be fixed?

We have been trying to run a session of our game (5ed Descent into Avernus) for several weeks now and while FGU will launch it immediately starts to throw errors and crash upon itself with no players ever logged in. I have tried reinstalling it completely, deleting all our campaign data, as well as continually checking for updates on the forums. Nothing has worked. I attached both the player log, console log, and game data. I did have to cut down both player and console log as after only 3 mins or so of running the files were well over several MB's in size.
System Setup:

Intel i7-8700k, 64GB RAM, SSD, Nvidia 1080Ti

Yeah, if it is a completely blank game with no modules loaded on my end, I had a player that was able to connect no issue and the game itself didn't crash. I then went and tested turning on modules one by one. We noticed a bunch of errors on the players side when I enabled Xanathar's for the DM. I attached these different logs as well from this attempt.
Order of Books enabled:
Descent into Avernus Campaign - Saw no issues
DMG - Saw no issues
Player's Handbook DM - Saw no issues
Xanathar's Guide - FGU temporarily froze and players altered me to errors on their side
Un-enabled Xanathar's and enabled Eberron - Saw no issues
I tested a few maps and items which seemed okay as well when I shared them with my player. At this point my assumption is that is has to be a piece of content that is causing the crash.++
Now that is testing a completely fresh campaign and install, when I load our current campaign as soon as I load the map I immediately get timer errors without any players in the game.

Hello Scott,
I believe this was a previous known issue with the desktop shortcut. Please right-click on the FGU shortcut and choose Properties. You will probably notice that the Start in: field is blank. Change it to "C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds", or wherever your program is installed if you chose something other than the default.

Hey Doug,
So when I go to the properties it seems to be what you said it should be without me having to fix it.
Target: D:\Programs\Fantasy Grounds Unity\FantasyGrounds.exe
Start in: D:\Programs\Fantasy Grounds Unity
I also have tried the C drive and the default path. I actually put it in a special spot, just in case there default path had an issue. In case you are wondering why the error and what I just sent you has a different path, that is because I had to Revo Uninstall and re-install it again.
I do not have any issues unless the updater needs to be updated. The FG client itself does not cause an issue. I think it is the hand-off between old updater updating itself. When I built a program like that I had to have the exe run a .bat to delete the updater and the rename the new updater to the correct name. Might be worth looking into?

Hey sorry for the confusion. That is the error I got when trying to update. What happens is the updater gets deleted, but not the new updater does not exist, so the program hangs for literally ever (not just exaggerating). In real-life I have waiting an hour plus thinking it was slow, but it would never finish because it mechanically can't. After I get this error I can't even even try to update again as the updater.exe is missing. With the updater missing, I can't even uninstall the program the normal way you uninstall a program. I have to use special software (Revo Uninstaller). The reason the links are different in the error vs now is had to uninstall and re-install the program and I wanted to install into a new drive to simply make sure there were no more files/settings that were going to the old folder. So Then "C" was correct, but I had to completely uninstall with Revo to get it so I could re-install, so I could update. The re-install is in "D".

This is effectively what we are doing.
There are two parts to the updater, FantasyGroundsUpdater and FGUpdaterEngine.
FGUpdaterEngine is the main graphical ui that does updates. When FGUpdaterEngine downloads a new updater, it unzips it, and copies the new FantasyGroundsUpdater to the main directory.
FGUpdaterEngine then hands off to FantasyGroundsUpdater, which copies the new FGUpdaterEngine and passes control back there.
----
As for your actual issue:
If you were to install from latest installer to D:\Programs\Fantasy Grounds Unity, open the updater engine, and check your settings, go to advanced, and check your App Directory path, is this the correct path?

I downloaded the installer last week (I have to do every time I have an issue).
The updater is pointing to the correct folder. One thing that I have changed in the last week is I uninstalled the Steam FG Classic. have not had an issue since, but also have not had to update the updater.exe since then. I still need FG classic as I have one group that plays on that and one group that plays on FGU (just the DM for classic is on vacation for 3 weeks so I thought it would be a good time to remove that variable). FG classic has no issues with updating though.
If/when this happens again. What could I do to make this easier for you to problem solve? Also if you can let me know BEFORE you update the updater.exe I would appreciate it so I can maybe capture a video for you guys to watch and go over everything.

We're still making changes to the installer, updater and patch system for FGU as well; though it's not quite as visible as the client changes. It was probably related to something in that process that needed to be reset. Thanks for the note; we'll keep an eye out to see if it's a recurring scenario.

So the same issue as it also is, when there is a new updater my files do not copy over. It seems to loose the proper access and then fail to copy the files. If I run the updater out of "D:\Programs\Fantasy Grounds Unity\FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW\FGUpdaterEngine" it seems to work. I manually copied it to "D:\Programs\Fantasy Grounds Unity\FGUpdaterEngine". The hand-off your updater is doing for some reason keeps getting stuck at this phase.

You've got me pretty stumped here, to be honest.
The current updater doesn't do anything with permissions when we are updating the updater.
I'll go through the steps, as at least we can try to pinpoint the step that's failing.
In FGUpdaterEngine
1: Download and save FantasyGroundsUpdater.dat.new
2: Unzip to FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW
3: Delete FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe
4: Move FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW/FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe to the main Program Folder
5: Start the newly copied FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe as a new process
6: Exit FGUpdaterEngine.exe
Then In FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe
1: Delete FGUpdaterEngine Folder
2: Copy remaining contents of FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW to main Program Folder
3: Launch new FGUpdaterEngine.exe
4: Exit FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe
At no point now in this process are we setting permissions on the folder or any of the apps, so I'm not sure how this could happen.
I've got a couple of thoughts. First, I'm wondering if there are permissions left behind on the data folder from an earlier install that could be causing this.
In this instance, I would Delete the whole Data folder and try installing from latest.
You might have already done this, but just in case.
With the latest updater, we also added a number of troubleshooting tools on the settings window we could try.
There's a tool for "Force Update". This will force the updater and FGU to update even if the system thinks you are on the latest revision.
This could help us pinpoint the issue without you having to wait for a new updater build.
There's also a tool called "Clear Settings". This will delete the settings files associated with Fantasy Grounds completely and force your system to show the "New Install" screen in the updater. This will let you choose a folder for Data and check permissions, then prompt you to login again and enter your key again, along with a few permissions checks in the process.
I'd suggest maybe this process:
1: On Latest Updater, Use the Clear Settings Tool to reset your settings
2: Close the updater immediately without going through the setup process again
3: Delete the Program Folder completely
4: Reinstall from latest https://fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.pkg
This should also prompt the new install process once the updater is loaded.
As for other ideas:
It's possible that an antivirus has decided it doesn't like us downloading new files and sticking them in Program Files, so try turning off any antivirus software to see if this is the issue.
If none of these work, perhaps we can set up a time to troubleshoot on a call if possible. You can email me at
[email protected] to set that up if needed.

We did recently make a change to what data files are used to report latest build across different development channels and I would guess that this was a hiccup related to that change.

I'm having the same issue here. My FGU keeps updating over and over again and I'm having problems with the connection as well. I Load my campaign on a Cloud Server - Public with Password, two of my player connected, the third one tried to connect just a little bit later and He couldn't. I close the server and opened again and no one was able to connect anymore. I tried the LAN connection, no one was able to connect either. Is this a problem with this version or is it a problem with FGU?? Because I just cancelled my subscription at FGC because I paid the Ultimate version of the FGU to play and now I can't play with my friends.
Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to solve this problem.

Quick update. the pattern is the following:
1) Updater downloads and installs a new version of updater, then quits.
2) Updater is automatically re-launched and it skips looking for new versions of updater
3) I manually run another update, but the process gets stuck before starting (see screenshot).
4) I kill the process, reopen it, and the whole thing starts from the beginning

Thanks for the update. You may have gotten stuck on a version that had some issues; but it sounds like you were able to manually bypass it to get on the latest. There is still an outstanding issue where the updater always updates; but I've already escalated that issue to Ryan to look at.

I had something odd happen with the updater. I first downloaded and installed a couple of days ago. Running in DEMO mode. There was an original campaign there, and then I created one.
Tonight I ran the updater to make sure that another issue that I have mentioned on the forums isn't fixed. Then I ran it a couple of times again -- past experiences suggest to me that sometimes these things layer, and I expected that if one ran the updater and there was nothing to do, it would say that. It does not appear to do so, however -- I got the feeling that the updater would have kept doing the same thing over and over again. ;)
But here's the kicker. After I had run the updater maybe 3 times, i went back in. The campaign I created was still there, but the one that had been there originally upon installation, called "5E Sample Campaign" had vanished -- however its folder is still there under the campaigns folder. It just isn't listed any more.
Also this affects the issue I had reported in another thread, where importing a character generated an error message. Now, when I open the PCs, and click the up arrow (import), there are no characters listed. (The character I had created on my own still exists.)

I can't update or log in anymore. I'm stuck on the June 4th version. When I try to update, nothing happens (window opens, nothing else happens). The log says invalid pw but I haven't changed my password or anything. When I try to log in to the app on the settings tab, nothing happens either: I get a logging in-line at the bottom of the screen but it just stays there. Any ideas about how to solve this? I did have to install FGC last week to join a new campaign where most of the players didn't have FGU - could that be the problem?

@Moon Wizard, since the update last weekend (v4.0.0 2020-06-19), the updater has been doing this same behavior, first time you launch it, it will say there is an update for the updater, run through it, restart and then continue through the update process. This is still continuing today after the most recent update to the Launcher\Application itself. This is on the Live channel. It's nothing breaking, just obviously odd behavior and I would say unintended since there isn't an actual update for the updater.

2) Updater is automatically re-launched and it skips looking for new versions of updater
3) I manually run another update, but the process gets stuck before starting (see screenshot).
4) I kill the process, reopen it, and the whole thing starts from the beginning
Thanks,
It looks like a bug was introduced in the latest update that is removing a file it shouldn't be. I'm going to work on fixing this bug and should have a new version pushed out asap to address this.

As an FYI on this thread, tonight I applied the latest update (2020-06-25), which seemed to work a little better. The 5E Sample Campaign was still gone - this was NOT a surprise. So, having made a copy of my entire data folder a couple of days ago, I renamed the broken 5E Sample Campaign (the update had indeed deleted several files, including db.xml), and copied my saved copy over. The 5E Sample Campaign then reappared. I then reapplied the update. For a while it seemed to stall on "SWKARTPACK1" or something similar to that name, but it did eventually complete.

Please note that SWKARTPACK1 is rather large, so it would be appropriate for it to stall on that while the download completes.

As an additional FYI on this, after working through a bit of the tutorial last night, I made a backup copy of the entire data folder. Good thing. Just now (about 7:15 CDT) I ran the updater and..... the demo campaign disappeared again. Glad I can just copy that campaign back. ;) Odd that this only seems to nail the 5E Sample Campaign, though.
Update: Annnnnnnnnnnd guess what - it was already gone last night - it wasn't in the copy I made. In other words, the db.xml got removed either while I was using the demo campaign or when I closed FGU. So, tonight I'll be going through more of the demo campaign (starting from the beginning) and monitor the folder from time to time to see when db.xml bites the dust.

I think I have a possible work-a-round for folks who are finding that FGU will no longer recognize the copy of their 5E Sample Campaign after an update has occurred.
It seems the update deactivates the sample campaign on the 'Load Campaign' option. If you were to use File Explorer, you would see that the 5E Sample Campaign does still exist in FGU's AppData folder.
You can do a complete reinstall of FGU, but I found that the sample campaign once again disappeared from the FGU launch screen after an update had occurred.
However, I've found the following solution to work the best, even with a week's worth of updates for FGU: there is a ZIP file copy of the campaign posted by ddavison in the below forum link.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?28150-New-5E-Sample-Campaign-Tutorial-Available&highlight=5E+Sample+Campaign
For simplicity, I would first recommend deleting the old 5E Sample Campaign from the campaign folder in the AppData pathway for FGU, before adding in the extracted folder from the ZIP file. So far, I haven't experienced any issues.
Incidentally, I run FGU with no third-party extensions, and I always use the live version.

Yes, the folder still exists - but several files, including db.xml do not. Maybe there is some difference in content between what gets installed with FGU and what is in the zip file that might have an impact.
I have taken to making a copy of the sample campaign folder at the end of a session, so I have something to restore if it gets wiped out - that lets me keep my progress. I hope. ;)

There is no log files cause it won't do anything. This is right after an install when you open it up for it to run it's thing. That's all it does.

I'm not exactly sure where to post this. I purchased the COC Investigator's handbook along with a few modules today from Steam early this morning. This evenign, when I ran FGU and clicked on Check for Updates, they didn't update. So I opened ye olde FG and updated there, and it picked up the new book and modules. Then I closed ye olde FG and opened FGU and clicked on Check for Updates, and it picked up the new handbook and modules. Not a biggie, but thought I would let the developers know in case there is something tricky about newly purchased content.

Did you get a successful login message after entering your login information in the Settings? If not, you'll still get that issue.
Alternately, you might try changing your password on the FG web site to something without special characters (just alphanumeric) and re-entering into settings to see if that helps.

Also, on the Advanced tab in your Settings, turn on Advanced Logging. Save your settings and your new password. If it shows Success when updating your password and pressing Log In, then save that and run an update. Send the Update.log file in to customer support at

Thank you MoonWizard and ddavison! I had tried each of these steps but was executing them out of order. The launcher would run, fail, then I'd change password and it didn't work because the connection seemed to fail with the failed download. After a password change, a full reinstall, and then updating the password in the launcher BEFORE trying to update, it worked.

I think you are probably fine, the latest Updater version is 2020-06-25 (at least as far as I am aware).
Likely the reference to 2020-07-07 is for FGU, not the Updater.
Here is a screen shot (as of today 2020-08-15), the top shows the Updater, the bottom shows FGU (I ran an update before I took the screen shot).
NOTE: This for Windows. It looks like from the screen shot in this post (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?55145-Updater-Issues&p=532381&viewfull=1#post532381) that the macOS Updater might be a different version (2020-06-04). I could be wrong though, I'm not a dev.

update your password in settings.
If that doesn't work then change your password on teh website and do not use any non-english characters or spaces. (I would go so far as to test with a very simple alphanumeric password).

Hi
I updated to MacOS Catalina a few days ago
I've just gotten around to starting up FGU since then.
The Updater 2020-6-25 just got stuck with a message "Error: Failed to receive data Retrying in 10 seconds"
This just repeated endlessly
I followed the advice in the OP and unistalled and reinstalled
I now have an Updater that is 2020-6-4 and the same behaviour occurrs.
FGU can be started, but obviously will not necessarily be the same version as my players.
What can I do to check what's going on?
Internet is behaving - I can reach websites and post here
I could roll MacOS back to High Sierra, but am reluctant to do that as I have anew machine on order and will have to go the Catalina route then, so would prefer to work out the kinks before that happens.
EDIT - Its worse than I thought, I just realised that without the updater, I can no longer access any of my Modules purchased through the Smiteworks store.
So no WotC modules are available to FGU
Yikes! Help! The game is supposed to be on tomorrow.

This is normally caused by something blocking network traffic to the updater within the app. Check your anti-virus and security software and add an exception for the app. It could be a local block (more likely) or something blocking it at the router.

Hi Reg... I'm a macOS user and I have no problem running FGU on Catalina (nor Big Sur). I recommend you make a backup of your campaigns folder and uninstall FGU after that. Try a new install from scratch and allow incoming connections for Fantasy Grounds from System Preferences - Security and Privacy - Firewall. If you are using Little Snitch or similar double check if FG traffic is being blocked. IMO, you don't need to roll back to High Sierra.
Reg

Too late, I rolled back my OS
Too many other issues
I'll wait until I can do a clean install of Catalina and try again when I have more time.
Thanks for the Security Prefs tip - I'll keep that in mind!
@ DDavison Thanks also. Right area I guess, just significant differences in MacOS vs Windows such that it wasn't after-market apps
But if it is security related, I'll give it a look when Catalina goes in fresh.
Appreciate the heads up guys

Yes. After I noticed the 1st log file, i did try running the exe directly. And again with run as admin. And again with all 3 kinds of compatibility modes (win7, win8, vista)
I also tried to uninstall it using the Windows add/remove. But the same thing happens: it hangs out in task manager, but not using resources. So I ended task, and deleted the folder, deleted the downloaded installer, and re downloaded. Still the same results.

There is no need to run as admin and dont run in compatibility mode. If you are running a third-party antivirus you may need to add an exception for the FGU app directory and make sure your user account has write permissions to the directory.
Can you attach your log files? There should be a FantasyGroundsUpdater.log file in the app directory and a FGUpdaterEngine.log file in the data directory.

I could not find a "FGUpdaterEngine.log" but there are 2 .log files in the data directory. "Player" and "Player-prev". They had identical text, so I only attached the most recently made file.

FGUpdaterEngine.log is in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds (unless you specified a different data directory).. you can usually get there by enterying %appdata% in the address bar of File Explorer.
There is usually one found in C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds as well

Have you checked your updater log? Can you post it? Have you checked your security software on your computer and router/modem to see if it is blocking anything? What security s/w do you use? Does your ISP provide "Advanced Security"? Who is your ISP?

Looks like your security software is protecting you. A couple of errors I see that you should be able to solve. The first one
Could not write to Log File: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FGUpdaterEngine.log" is denied.
Browse to :\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds, right click on the folder and select Properties. Go to Security tab and Edit the permissions so that your user has has Full Control to that folder, contents and all sub folders/files.
Your next error;
Failed to save app settings: System.Security.SecurityException: A security error has been detected.
Indicates your security software is not allow changes it the registry to be made. You will have to check how to allow it to allow you to install software and or make registry changes. I don't know the steps for this.
Hopefully if you resolve those two issues, the others will go away too, but you do have more of a similar nature.
