I installed FGU on three systems, two of which could not set user permissions.

- My own W10 (1903) PC: Permissions set by FGU updater on both program and data directory.

- My W8 VM running on a NAS (Linux player remote connecting to join my FG server): Permissions could not be set by FGU, neither as limited user nor as user with admin rights. Data folder even is in C:\Games, which all "Authorized users" have access to by default. Manually setting write permissions to "Everyone" worked.

- A player's W10 PC: Permissions could not be set by FGU, again had to set these manually to make it work.

Why does FGU Updater need "Everyone" permissions instead of "Authorized users" even for data folders that do not reside under a user's own appdata structure?

Why does FGU Updater need "Everyone" permissions instead of "Authorized users" even for data folders that do not reside under a user's own appdata structure?

It doesn't need the Everyone group specifically .. it just needs the user to have write permissions to the install directory.

The FGU installer actually adds the Users group with full control to the install directory - note that the Authenticated Users group is a member of the Users group by default. However, we've seen time and time again, security software removes the permissions immediately which is why the updater asks to Fix Permissions by adding the Everyone group as a catch-all. If that doesn't work, its usually because the security software removed the permissions again. You may have to add the FGU directory to the antivirus exclusion list.

The W8 VM does not run any third-party antivirus software, so it's just Windows Defender.

Why does FGU's updater try to run as user (running into permission problems) while FGC asks for administrator rights just like any other installer (including FGU's installer before Updater is run)? This seems like an unnecessary hassle, which in turn needs me to do remote support for my players to allow them proper installation of FGU.

Add an exclusion to Windows Defender then.
FGU updater installs some files to %appdata%, which if you run as admin would install under the admin profile.

How does Classic handle this problem then?

Hi Guys

Just fired up FGU and the 2020-11-01 build toldme that there is an update

Clicking on that first time hung the updater, so I killed it and quit the VPN and tried it again

It went through and updated things and the launch winwidow displays build 2020-11-04, but is still prompting me to check for updates.

I've tried that several times now and there were no more hangs, but the prompt remains.

Running on MacOS Catalina.

What info would you like to best help diagnose what's going on?

Nevermind - I discovered another thread that mention the minor glitch in the updater highlight

I have an Ulimited Fantasy Ground Unity licence and my players met problem when installing FGU Demo software (last released version).
The bug is : incomplete install.
This bug is completed by impossible software uninstall (we were obliged to do I manually)
After trying help one of my friend I think found the origin of the problem : the user password linked to your server is not “kept” in memory during install.
This is the way we did to bypass the problem with FGUpdater :
Go in the login windows
Connect to server
Check several time that the password is “kept” in memory
Start the update
Select “Fix the problem” in authorisation rights.

I hope this will help

This weeks update in macOs I find the updater doesn't retain the updated version (md5sum or sha) and so every time I click update it repeats the update, specifically the updater itself and two items from Traveller.

I have an Ultimate license for FGU. When I launch the game I get a black screen and the top bar says Fantasy Grounds (Not Responding). Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

It happens when I try and open FGU, I was able to get in and work on a campaign on Monday. Yes, video drivers are up-to-date.

Last time I was on FGU was yesterday afternoon. I run the updates every time I start the program. This is what I get when I try and launch FGU

Is that right when you launch FGU, or after you try to start a campaign from the launch screen?

If right when you launch FGU, then please check your anti-virus or security programs to see if anything FG related is being blocked or quarantined.
If after you start a campaign, then please open the logs via the Log button in the upper left of launch screen before you hit the Start button. And, then hit Compile Logs button after you get to that point again.

Just got to where I can try and figure this out again. I get the black screen if I run the updater or try and launch FGU. I deleted the program and reinstalled, then went in to the antivirus and told it to let FG, FG updater and crash grabber through the firewall. I still get the black screen on both.

It sounds like something is preventing the Unity graphics engine that FG uses from running. The black screen is usually indicative of a graphics driver issue.

What OS are you running? Maybe we can see if any logs are being generated; but the location is dependent on OS.

I seem to be having a issue with Unity not keeping updates around.

Every time I startup Fantasy Grounds Unity it starts as 4.0.0 and requires updates.
I have successfully updated to 4.0.6 and 4.0.10 but once I exit the program and restart it states its 4.0.0 again and I can't connect to clients using newer versions.

Do you have multiple installs or a previous installation in a different location? (possibly the desktop shortcuts are pointing to the wrong location) .. If that's not it can you tell me where you have FGU installed?

I have a steam install of the classic version. I believe tried to install FGU to my F drive, under "F:\FGU\FantasyGrounds.exe".
But it looks like the shortcut I use to launch the program every time is pointing to "C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FantasyGrounds.exe".
So it does look like I have two installs, or at least two locations on my computer where FantasyGrounds.exe lives.
Shouldn't using the task menu to launch the program on the c drive be consistent at least?
Wouldn't that keep using the same version, keep updates around and ignore the version on the f drive?

I wanted to add what worked for me.
I was getting:

Error: Failed to receive data
Retrying in 10 seconds

Kept repeating and not downloading. Opened up my router settings to confirm there wasn't some kind of throttling enabled, and noticed that there was a firmware update to be performed. Ran it and now the updater runs smooth as butter!

Thanks again for all the help!

Not sure if this is the right place or not, but I am having issues with the update function. I noticed that I haven't had an update for a little while, so I decided to check using the option on the loading screen. It is coming upo with a failure because my user name or password is not recognised. I can launch my game with no problem, and my players can gain access OK. The only "weird" thing I have done is look at the new Forge, and I added the Exhaustion extension (mainly because I wanted to see how the forge worked). Any idea what's going on? I am running FGU, playing 5e, and until now I have installed every update as soon as it becomes available. I have the Ultimate licence, currently noted as v4.1.4 Ultimate (2021-06-08).

Go into your Settings and re-enter your username and password, save it, and then run an Update. It should be the same as what you use to log onto the forums. If it fails, you can always reset your password on the forum and then try the new password.

EDIT: Try @ddavison's suggestion first.

Can you follow these steps to provide us the logs?

* Launch FGU
* Click Settings button
* Cancel Settings dialog in updater
* Click Update button in updater
* Once it completes, click Settings button in updater
* Open Troubleshoot tab in settings
* Click Gather Logs button
* Post the logs

Thanks,

@ddavison: thanks, but that did not work. Reset the password, also did not work.
@Moon Wizard: followed additional steps, still no joy. Will PM gathered logs.

OK, having gathered all the logs and PM'd them to Moon Wizard, I thought "One more try". This time it worked. Sigh.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.

I keep having updater issues, and have reinstalled FG Unity several times. But I tend to get the same kinds of messages when I run the Updater. "Game server connection was lost, please return to launcher. FG Unity worked for many months for me but has been nothing but trouble since October. I'm running a Windows 10 PC. Images are attached of the error messages.

Welcome to the FG forums. Sorry you're having issues.

Please provide your logs - details on collecting them here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1242136781/How+to+Compile+Logs then attach the resulting ZIP file to this thread.

Thank you! I followed that link and downloaded the two .exe files to update redistributable files, and got error messages when I tried to run both of them:

"[1880:31A0][2021-11-24T15:20:59]e000: Error 0x80070666: Cannot install a product when a newer version is installed."

Is there a way to force the execution of these two .exe files? Or will that just make my FG crash again when Windows updates?

I would suggest uninstalling the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable" in Windows; and re-installing from the Microsoft web site with the link provided. That should be the latest one, since it's direct from MS.

Team, I am experiencing a problem in that FG is not launching. I just completed an update after having not used it since late May. I'm on an iMac and finding the Update Launcher to work as normal but the FG fails to open. I get the message, "FantasyGrounds quit unexpectedly". Do you need to see my logs to troubleshoot?

Thanks!

It turns out my entire Windows 10 was corrupted. Eventually videos and music files wouldn't play either. I had to completely reset Windows to Windows 11, and reinstall FG Unity. FG worked after that.

We are having an issue with our game. Myself and other players open FGU, updater is ringed red. Hitting update, starts the normal process then fails because of an invalid user name/password. I have changed both of these, and I still get the error any time I try to update. I can connect to the lobby, and can join a game. I can start my own campaigns. Other players in the group are experiencing the same thing (including the DM). None of us can update. Any clues as to what is going on? I successfully updated to FGU4.1.13 earlier today, seems to have gone wrong since then.

Since the most recent update, my updater window is off-screen to the while running. My laptop monitor resolution is set at 3840x2160 (Windows says this is the recommended resolution). The OS is Windows 11. I am using the resolution high DPI scaling override System setting. This happens no matter what what DPI setting I use, even if I don't change the scaling at all. I am able to use the Move command if I hover over the updater icon on the task bar then right click on the preview window that pops up. I have to use the arrow keys to move the window as the mouse can't reach the window when it is off screen.

Also, when the main menu opens, it is half-way off screen to the left. After the updater closes, it usually re-opens in the center of the screen.

The recommended system scaling at 3840x2160 is 250%. If I change that to 200%, the windows still appear partially off-screen. Setting the scale to anything smaller than that makes icons and text too tiny to read.

There are no error messages.

I have not seen anything like that before. We use the the Unity engine for our updater to support multiple platforms, so we're not doing anything specific to DPI scaling ourselves.

* Are you running multiple monitors, or an extended desktop? (i.e. maybe the updater is appearing on another monitor/desktop space?)

You can also see if perhaps you can override the DPI behavior for the updater.
* Go to C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FGUpdaterEngine
* Right click on FGUpdaterEngine.exe, select Properties
* Click on Compatibility tab
* Click on the Change high DPI settings button
* See if any of the options helps after committing the changes.

I've been having this same issue as well. I also have a 4k laptop monitor. If I resize the launch window from the bottom right corner it puts it back on screen. When I use a second display I have to resize the window half way across the screen so I can grad the window from the top, which is at the bottom of the second display, and move it to one of the screens. I haven't reported it since it's only a minor inconvenience but it's been like this for months.

The updater message disappears if you close fantasy grounds, but when you hit launch fantasy grounds, the update closes, fantasy grounds starts, updater starts again, and back to error message. Endless loop. I tried to Ctrl, Shift Esc, End Task for FGU updater, and after it closes, it relaunches. Only way to stop the updater from auto launching is to restart my computer.

Checked the Shortcut, it is correct. Fantasy Grounds launches fine, and runs fine, but if I click on update, that is when the problems start with the FGUupdateengine looping as in above video and new video below.

It looks like some other program on the machine is interfering with the processes.

When you click Check for Updates, FG passes a command line option to the updater application to automatically start; and that is being blocked in your video. (since you have to also click the Update button) And then, it looks like that program is restarting the updater application when it closes itself.

What OS are you running? What start-up programs are you running?

It shouldn't be, but I will double check. Also, I don't use Steam, and FGU is not being synced and I disabled OneDrive and Google Drive and the problem still persists. I guess my next option will be to uninstall and reinstall FGU. I remember during one of the last FGU updates, don't remember when, I had to start clicking the update button, instead of it auto-updating, thought that was a new feature.
Anyways, FGU works fine, no issues there, only when I run the updater.
