Adding a frame / background color to the chatentry window

Is it possible to add any decoration (frames, background colors) to the chatentry element ?

The documentation suggests this inherits from the windowcontrol element, and can therefore use the <frame> or <backcolor> tags, but all my experimenting with them today has failed to make a frame or anything appear.

Without this, it seems the only way to "mark" the chatentry spot is to draw it onto the actual chatentry graphic itself (which is done in most rulesets I own), but I was hoping to keep this more flexible and add it using the XML and configured frames I already have.
Former SW ruleset / Deadlands extension author. Now I just wanna play a few games. And maybe hack. A little.

Have you tried using the mode frames already?

Chat entry does not inherit from windowcontrol, so that's an error in the docs.
