Things You Can Do For Free in FGVTT
Since FGVTT went free some time ago, people were asking what can be done with it for completely free. So I decided to write a guide for newcomers to enjoy the vtt by either not paying a single dime or only spending $1 on The Forge.
Of course, you can't have the luxury of having entire official modules and the extensive automation they provide, but you can do a lot of things with it; ranging from running free encounters and one-shots, to worldbuilding and map prep, to solo play...
This guide is my New Year gift to the lovely community.

February 10th, 2026, 01:38 #2Welcome to Thrifty's Solo-Friendly Guide to Free Resources for FGVTT.Nylanfs has it right: Do not add extensions till you are familiar with the base program because it already has a LOT of functionality built in. Borrowing his analogy of like a kitchen table (campaign), next a bookshelf (the ruleset) of sourcebooks and folders of maps and images (modules). And you can have as many kitchen tables as you want.
This hobby can be expensive but no more.
Let's start from the beginning.
1. How to Load Modules & Extensions
NOTE: Don't confuse Extensions with Modules. When you download it from the Forge, it copies the file[s] automatically. All you do from there is to Update.
data folder button.jpg
Rulesets which are .pak files [D&D, Pathfinder] are where the entire data is processed through certain rules, such as automated combat rules in D&D 5E.
Modules which are .mod files hold data for NPCs, Items, Text, etc., in them.
Extensions on the other hand are .ext files and they add functionality to the the rulesets, such as expanded sheets. They can override the base software functions. Some of them need to be updated by community devs to be compatible with new versions of the VTT.
In the Launcher, look upper left [check the pic upstairs], where there are 2 small buttons;
Folder icon goes to your Data folder. "Data > Modules" is where you should copy the .mod files IF you are copying it from another source out of the Forge.
Similarly, IF you downloaded an extension out of the Forge, you copy it into "Data > Extensions" folder.
How to Start a Campaign
start campaign.jpg
If you just downloaded rulesets, modules, or extensions, you should Update only once for the launcher to recognize the new items.
But I don't recommend updating before an important game session IF the devs updated FGVTT, just in case it breaks your extensions.
So, all you do is to click Create Campaign,
- Choose your Ruleset,
- Check the marks in Extensions if you're using any, [Official Language Fonts in my case],
- Give it a name [DnD 5E in my case],
- and you're good to go.
- Just press Start at the bottom right.
How to load modules inside the VTT?

2. Things You Can Do For Free
- You can play solo to learn a setting or practice your GMing skills. Or simply entertain yourself. Just experiment to your heart's content!
- You can connect with your friends and run them some free quick encounters or one-shot adventures that I will list.
- You can find other people in the DISCORD and the LFG Forums to just play, since no one needs an Ultimate License for GMing anymore. If you're a new player LFG, please read the Sticky: Template for Player(s) Looking for Group Listings
- "Prep is play," as Geek Gamers said once... You can build your world for your homebrew adventures in the VTT as in text form with links, and add free images / maps to them. You can use the maps as a starting point and build from there, as you can add pins to them. The pins are links to all kinds of data: Story Pages, Encounters, Loot Parcels...
- If you are interested in other rulesets [than D&D], FGVTT has support for most played niches too. But they require the most work in terms of free use.
- Finally, I will list free rulesets, modules, maps, and extensions in The Forge and Dmsguild so that you can just download and play, or use the extensions as a means to other types of play.
- Such as, using a map pin extension to detail your maps with custom icons just like in Skyrim. Using two card dealer extensions for all kinds of creation [story, character type, traps,] and play [standard cards, paid deck of many things...] And even making detective style corkboards.

3. For Total Beginners
Tutorial 5E Campaign (and D&D 5E System Reference Document) comes free with basics guide. This is not a video game, it is a Virtual Tabletop Software with its own mechanics. Most of the things may feel strange at first but when you discover the sheer amount of automation in time, it will get easier.
If you are new to FGVTT, first thing you should do is to learn the ropes which are easy, but ONLY once you get the hang of them. You won't need anything but Tutorial Campaign at this point.
It is a free encounter where you pit 2 pre-made characters against 2 goblins and their wolf companion.
I suggest opening it within the VTT but in case you need it:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfil...?id=2223382154
From there, just keep learning the basics of the software.
- Take your time to familiarize yourself with the UI.
- Start small. Take one step at a time to accomplish easy goals:
- Such as, importing a map and run a 1v1 combat by adding your PC and an NPC on it.
- You first add your PC and the enemies into the Combat Tracker, and then your PC to Party Sheet, lastly, place everyone into a map.
- All enemy abilities and attacks are used in Combat Tracker.
- Whereas Your PC's actions are executed from its own Sheet > Actions tab.
- You can drag and drop ATK and DMG rolls from the Combat Tracker / PC Sheet directly onto any token in a map or even directly onto N/PCs in the Combat Tracker.
- Or if you like Roleplaying, you can learn to use the Chat functions [such as /mood] and to create story entries with links to NPCs.
Rest of the guide recommends all kinds of stuff both for beginners and veterans, as well as soloists.
But teaching the VTT is out of the scope of this guide.
An Old Video On How to Run Combat: Now we have Context Menu instead of Radial Menu.

4. For D&D Beginners: 33 Encounters
Free Basic Rules and System Reference Document (SRD) contain enough stuff from the ruleset; classes, spells. enemies, items...NOTE for Beginner Soloists: I don't recommend wasting time to learn solo rules on top of DnD Rules and the VTT's usage if you're starting anew. Anything is best learned by jumping into action and making your own mistakes.
It is a good opportunity to check if you'll like the system, or to learn it at your own pace.
If Tutorial 5E Campaign gets stale, I listed some free and short encounters for you to try.
Free DnD 5E Encounters
NOTE that, some of them shows as PDF. To install FGVTT modules, unzip the zip file and move the file with .mod extension into your "data > modules" folder. The folder button at the top left of the Launcher is the shortcut to the data folders. After you copied .mod files into your data > modules folder, Update the client from the Launcher.
- How to load modules guide is at the top. -

9. For Pathfinder 1E / D&D 3.5E Players
NOTE!: WotC won't give license to convert D&D 3.5 ed books into modules. Abandon all hope. Just use the SRD/PF1E stuff or convert your own books.
The Forge is your best friend for an enormous amount of support in PF1.

If you're new to PF1E, just use the System Reference Document to learn the ropes. It comes free with the ruleset.
This module contains all current races from the Archive of Nethys. 75 races in total.
It contains standard and alternate racial traits, sub races, favored class options, racial feats, and racial spells. Each of the races can be drag-dropped onto the character sheet. As can all the individual components (traits, feats, spells, etc.)

//!OBSOLETE!// PF1E Encounter Gen Extension by celebrindal - https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/920/view
It is helpful when playing solo.
Use this tool to randomly create encounters for PF1E. It allows you to select the size of the party (CR=Challenge Rating) and if you wish to generate single or multiple NPC's which then can be used to either increase or decrease the NPC CR. It uses a custom built interface to generate the encounter and then uses the built in core/PF1E code to insert the encounter into the database. Update: Now runs via a button off the encounter window.Last edited by Tempered7; Yesterday at 05:57.
I scribble Solo RPG methods and reviews for Resources in my All Things Solo blog.
Now with Solo Builds for DnD 5E. And All Solo Modules for FGU WIP.
