    Hello All

Hey all, been following FG for a long time, finally was in a position to make the plunge and get to buying.

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. Been playing DND since the beginning, been mostly a DM for last few decades. Was a back in the day Dragonlance guy.
Looking forward to learning the tools, and interacting with some of you.

Saying thanks in advance as I will undoubtedly be asking lots of dumb questions.

    Have fun gaming!

Welcome to the learning curve. Worth every minute. Many videos available to help you on the journey.

The learning curve is very real, as is the initial buy-in if your group rotates DMs, but that's to be understandable for a rather powerful and highly extensible tool.

For D&D 5E, there's plenty of conversions of official material (usually available on the same release date as the hardcover versions), a pretty good ruleset implementation, and a *lot* of available extensions (both paid and free) to help automate various gameplay mechanics and make actually playing considerably smoother. Played through an LMOP -> SKT campaign with it and it worked pretty well for us for us.

what ruleset are you looking at? If buying FG books, keep an eye on HumbleBundle.com as Paizo PDFs come up cheaply multiple times a year (and I got a FGU deal once too). Paizo then will sync with FG and give a steep discount towards getting the same book in FG. and welcome! I am available on Discord if you want to ask some starter questions (can save you time looking stuff up perhaps)

I'm a 5E guy. I do kind of like the idea of first or 2nd edition just to see my kids try to figure out Thac0 though
I am also a reasonably new 5E guy, and very much a "wing it" DM, so I still do alot of 2nd/3.5E "isms", so that is a bit of an adjustment for my rules lawyers players (one DM's his own stuff, so I lean on him for help, but....). Like, Yeah, you need to find some rare inks and have your Artificer complete those tattoo needles not just meditate for an hour, or "I know that's what PHB says, but here's how we're going to handle that...". Should work ok, we play locally, and I am starting with FG being a glorified battle map.
I AM making a custom campaign, and associated modules though. Going through the tuts to do stories, npcs, maps etc. So I'll learn along the way. Then some of my players are going to help me go back, refine (recreate the maps add LOS all that jazz) and release as a set of modules for feedback. Pretty sure I am not doing it right, but my method is working for me so far. Once we start using it more for actual play (eventually my players may end up remote some/part time), we'll expand our usage of the tools. I am intrested in add-ons/extensions etc. to help over time, I am sure I'll ask for more guidance. Doing some of the video tuts along the way. I have to check out the Academy yet. Probably do some fumbling around first.

I am the dedicated GM, and all my players are local for now, so even if we want to rotate and/or have one of them run a pre-made, which I might, found a couple on DMsguild ported direclty by TSR worth a look, they can use this PC, so I went Ultimate

Last question, eventually I could see the nerd in me doing some extensions, is that straight in unity, or some sciripting language like Lua or custom. I have fond memories of my Rust monster behavior script I added to NWN back in the day....on second thought, I'll shelve that since it'll be many months to that point....

    Anyway, cool, and thanks!

See the link in my sig for Adventure Creation. You will probably want to do all your campaign development in one or more development campaigns. The basics are discussed in that link.

Extensions are "written" in XML and LUA scripting and run after the ruleset is loaded and effectively are replacements or additions to the ruleset code. When you are interested, their are tutorials on the forums and on YouTube to get you started.
