I totally agree to this approach. I had the people who were interested fill out an application, just to narrow it down. I don't expect something that takes 15 minutes to fill out as most of it was multiple choice, but the 2 questions I had that were to tell me about yourself and why you want to be in this campaign I was running, I expect some thoughtful answers - not a one word answer.
If I am going to be putting in time to make sure you are going to have a good experience I want to make sure you are a fit for the group.

You can try the subreddit r/lfg. Lots of randos, some end up in r/rpghorrorstories. But this is like the entire internet looking for a game. Listings are ruleset specific but not necessarily platform specific. Be prepared to play on vtts not Fantasy grounds. Good luck!

I almost posted here looking for players last year, but then decided to post on Facebook instead and see if any friends wanted to play. That worked out, and now I get to hang out with some old friends once a week. Then I started a campaign with my workmates during lunch break on Fridays, so that we could be social during lock down. That's gone well. Then one of my players started a campaign and I was invited to play. Now I'm in three active campaigns!
