Smiteworks folks and the folks trying this out in test (as seen in the laboratory forum) have been working very hard and making really good progress. I don't blame Smiteworks for not wanting to rush this out the door. No matter how good Grandma's apple pie smells, nobody wants a half-baked apple pie (except cross-eyed cousin Rudy, but he's weird, and every family has a "cousin Rudy" in some form or another). Smiteworks: I appreciate and respect that you're putting the time and effort into doing this right. Thank you.

Roll20 rushed out their lighting implementation and it failed for most players. They had to totally revamp it later on. I started using FG between the two versions, so I don't know how well version 2 is working. But I can say that a poorly implemented lighting system is worse than not having one. It's a good amount of work to set up lighting and when it doesn't work right, it's a lot of wasted effort by the DM that coulda gone elsewhere.
Fantasy Grounds Unity Lives! Good job, Smiteworks!

The little I have heard is not well. I think they are working on version 3. Though they have a new COO from ourtside the Orr Group so maybe they will be successful this time.

Like Babushka's Strawberry Jam, lighting should only be released when it's truly ready.

What I really hope is that these new features will not affect much performances as players usually judge performances like LAG, slow movement, freezes more than else.

People want to play, not to try to play on a laggy software, so better to have a deeply tested lighting.

This said, as a GM I think a properly implemented lighting will incredibly affect my games and I hope at least by July 2021 we would have the first release LIVE. Let's cross fingers and touch wood.

I'm running two games. On one Friday it's the normal Live version. On the other Friday it's the Test version. I have run into no issues. I've kept my campaign within the Test channel separate and saved to it my assets as u would normally. Everything is running great with lighting and effects. If you're eager for the lighting and can't wait then simply use the Test setting.

Just because one person hasn't "run into no issues" doesn't mean that others won't (and posts on these forums illustrate that).

If you're considering using test for a game make sure you thoroughly read the information here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forum...a-Release-v4-1 and be prepared for issues that could impact your session.
