    Newbie Spell Questions (5e, Classic)

    Hi,

After our first session, some questions have been raised regarding spells:

    1) Sorcerer cast Sleep on goblins, how do we apply the Unconscious effect to the goblins with a 1 minute "timer"?

    2) Cleric has a 1st level spell on his War Domain Spells list. As per the Wiki User Guide instructions, the Domain Spells are in their own group. How does the Cleric track 1st level spell expenditure when the 1st level domain spell is in a different group than the rest of his 1st level spells?

    3) Nobody has cast a spell with a saving throw yet, but for future reference, how does that work? The spellcaster targets the enemy, pushes the cast button... then what? How do I, as a DM, roll the enemy's save so that FG compares it to the caster's DC?

    1. Either create an effect in the actions tab of 'unconscious' and set the duration for a minute or apply the effect from the effects dialog (first method is best)
    2. Not sure what you mean. The domain spells are always available fo the Cleric so they don't need to 'prepare' them each day. So a level 1 Cleric with a WIS of +3 will have 4 normal spells and 2 Domain spells available. If you are talking about spell slots that has nothing to do with the number of spells available. A 1st level Cleric has 2 spell slots which they can use to cast any of their spells. They could cast two different spells or the could cast the same one twice. Players need too tick off a spell slot manually once they have used a spell. When all of their slots are ticked off then all of their spells (except Cantrips) will be removed from their actions tab.
    3. You target the creature as normal and then press the cast button. FG will the roll the saving throw and you will see the result of the save in chat. The DC for the save should be shown in the spell entry in the actioons tab. But FG will do the calculation automatically.

    Thank you for clarifying 1 & 3!

As for 2, I meant spells slots. How does the Cleric track expended spell slots when the 1st level domain spell has different slots than the Level 1 spells, but they should have shared spell slots as per the rules, yes? Does this question make sense? I'm having a hard time explaining it Essentially, now if he casts a domain spell, he ticks off a domain slot leaving all 1st level slots unused, which is not how it should work, right? How do we do it, so that when he checks a domain slot, it simultaniously checks a level 1 spell slot?

And on the same note, how does expending spell slots work if you cast a 1st level spell as a 3rd level spell?

Whenever your Cleric casts any spell whether it is a Domain spell or a non Domain spell then they need to mark off a spell slot. The Cleric only has two spell slots at first level and whenever they have cast two spells (of any kind) then the spell slots have been used up. Domain spells don't have different spell slots - they use the same slots as other spells. There is a difference between the number of spells that the Cleric has available to cast and how many spells they can actually cast. As I noted above a 1st level cleric with a WIS bonus of +3 has 4 ordinary spells and 2 Domain spells at their disposal. But they only have two spell slots so they can cast 2 different spells from their list or 1 spell twice. Once the last slot is used up they can't cast any more spells (except Cantrips) until they can recover their spell slots.

Once the Cleric is of a high enough level and has higher level spell slots available then they can cast a lower level spell using a higher level slot. So when they do that they mark off the higher level slot as being used rather than the actual level of the spell. They can't cast a low level spell in a higher level slot until they actually have a that higher level slot available. So a 1st level Cleric can't cast any spells at a higher level since they only have 1st level slots available. Once they reach 3rd level and gain second level spell slots they could cast a 1st level spell using a second level slot.

OK, so the Cleric doesn't include slots in the Domain spells group but checks the appropriate Level Spells slot whenever he casts a domain spell. I think I got it.

As for casting at higher level: I'm guessing FG can't handle that automatically. Would the Cleric have to create a custom spell to represent casting at higher level and to actually automate it?

Indeed. There is only one row of spell slots and that is found at the top of the actions tab just below the weapons section. There's no other row of spell slots.

There are two methods of casting at a higher level. The first is to add in new spell lines for each spell that has a damage or heal that can be cast at higher level. This can quickly bog down the actions tab. The much cleaner method is to click on the damage or heal effect, hold the left mouse button and then drag. You can then right click to add more dice and then drop everything onto the target either in the CT or on the token on the map.

FG doesn't mark off spell slots automatically. The main reason it doesn't is that it can't know what level of spell slot the player wants to use; so it's an entirely manual operation where the player ticks off whatever slot has actually been used.
