Thread: Video chat

    Video chat

I want to start an online game but need video chat. I have no software and like Fantasy Grounds but it seems to have no easy way to video chat while playing.
I am a 50 year old man with limited technical skill and no real time to learn how to program anything. Spending 40 hours learning gow to set up a video chat that I hope my players can also figure out is really a non starter.
Is there any simple way to do this that doesnt require a computer science degree or 2 computers?

Use Discord (my suggestion), Hangouts, Skype or one of the other dozen video chat programs.

Discord you can have up and running with video in about 30 minutes, max.

Download and install Discord from here; https://discordapp.com/download

Create a Discord account here; https://discord.onl/2019/01/24/how-t...scord-account/

See here how to setup your very own free Discord server; https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en...eate-a-server-

See here how to use video: https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en...ng-Video-Calls

I am aware of discord and have an account and server. I see no way how I get it onthe same screen as FG without cutting the FG window size by 25% or using 2 monitors.

Those are your options if you don't want to use an overlay, which you said elsewhere you don't want to do. Not ideal, I know.

Use an overlay application, like the one mentioned in the other video thread you posted in here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forum...l=1#post432366

I will attempt the overlay option and see if it can possibly be explained to users even less technically adept than myself who probably have less advanced computers.
This seems overly complicated and really eliminates potential customers who would be willing to pay extra for it.

To expand on the overlay mentioned above.

This doesn’t require programming or complex setup.
    1. Install the overly app
    2. Run the overlay app
    3. Run your video app (e.g. Discord) and select the section of the Discord window you want to display in the overlay.
    4. Set the desired overlay opacity.
    5. Set whether you want click forwarding or click through.
    6. Start FG, position the overlay window as desired.

The end result of this is pretty similar to what you’d get if video was embedded in FG itself.

Seems like a reasonable possibility. I think it will still take at least 2 of my players out of the game.

As has been mentioned, it is a case of development priorities for the limited FG development team. Whereas video embedding is important to you, it might not be important to others - video doesn’t even appear on the first page of the FG wishlist: https://fg2app.idea.informer.com/. Hence why the FG devs aren’t spending valuable time on something that isn’t seen by most users as a "must have".

You do realize the wishlist was done by current users because those to whom it is important aren't customers nor are they likely to become so. The people making the wishlist are for the most part people who already can do work arounds or don't care about video.
This resistance will continue to send people to Roll20 even though in my opinion it is overall an inferior product. This will particularly be true when the new version of FG comes out.
To be honest I am as likely to use Roll20 or point my webcam at physical terrain as try to get players to go through this.
