These days if you have a more or less new video card the monitor is the problem. You might check it's maximum resolution. You can hurt your monitor now if the video card tries to put it in a higher resolution than it can handle.

Since you have a Thinkpad, I think you're pretty much stuck with that. Unless you hook up an external monitor to it.

I feel your pain. At 2048x1536, on a 20" visible area monitor, I still can't seem to get everything I want up without overlapping something.
