It wasn't just a FG purist, he was fighting with how D&D mechanics worked and getting frustrated trying to replicate his home mechanics in FG automatically.

No. He just wanted to add a sword to an orc without having to rewrite the orc's stat block manually. He didn't like the 5e ruleset architecture. And he's not the only one.
I never claimed to be sane. Besides, it's more fun this way.
