I like shift because of it's size, sure it is used as a modifier but I have never had an instance where it has interfered with play.
This said, I rarely use push to talk. I have a good microphone on boom, set up the thresholds manually and don't eat or allow any noise when I am running my games
Years of recording audio has trained me to loath things that may need to be edited out.

That’s good for you, and nice if you have the magic threshhold but I have played in a few campaigns, now, and it is never about oneself but one’s peers.

Always use Push to Talk, folks. Sneezes, coughs, cleared throats, and just plain bad manners happen - don’t be lazy, or asked to apply it.

I am not sure if you were intending that to be as flippant / accusatory as it came across to me.
I made it clear that I do acquiesce when people state it as a rule for their games or if people request it during a game.
In an anecdotal defense of my stance. I have a player in one of my groups that came in with the expectancy of that being a hard and fast rule as well. He would every so often forget to push p2t or more frequently lift his finger off the button cutting off the last 1/2 a second.
We helped him set it up, told him to mute himself if he was going to make noise and have a strict rule of "no eating in front of the mic". Now we have less disrupted sessions and he can just naturally talk.
I believe a good test is, if someone can hear you typing on a mechanical keyboard with voice detection, then your sensitivity is too high. Automatic gain should never be used with voice detection either.
If any of this caused issue I would be dealing with more problems when editing audio on my end. Thankfully the worst I have to deal with from my end is wet mouth noises after DM for 6+ hours straight.
Heck I had a player I had to talk to after last session because he did bring food and was using push to talk, but kept bumping his plate by accident.
In summary, push to talk is a good option. But I don't believe it is fair to characterise voice detection users as if they are just inherently being lazy/inconsiderate. It is important to tell them your preferences/rules for sure, but be open to the player/dm making their own arguments / showing evidence if they can to support their own position.
It isn't like a <5min pre-game audio check ever hurt anyone.

I do appreciate the well-written response and agree pre-stream sound checks help out.
As a GM and Player, I find it is just easier and better for everyone’s ears and nerves if hot mics aren’t a thing at all.
Too many times, very private conversations can be picked up on open mics, also. Mute buttons can be just out of reach when that sneeze has you cringing and dreading its quick attack, too often.
Not just for the above, but the added benefit of having the FG Avatar for one’s PC light up with a comic book-style speech bubble during one’s PC’s dramatic response to a heinously devious GM’s plot hooks coming to get them(when using Right Arrow key vs a function/work key) is nice for distinguishing voice.
