    Question Improving Search Fu

    Does anyone have any recommendations, techniques or hints at how to improve search results? I'm especially interested in techniques that help with searching the FG forums.

    This question is inspired because I just was looking for a thread that I knew the exact title of ("advanced fantasy grounds usage") and yet when I did the search the return was still the last item on the first page of results. I would think I would be able to get better results than that and so, this thread was born.

    Help & insight, for me and others who may be having the same issues, would be appreciated.

    Check the "Sort by" entry. I'm guessing you were on "date" not "relevance".

    Ways of refining your search:

    As the search is powered by Google you can use standard Google search operators: https://support.google.com/websearch.../2466433?hl=en and https://bynd.com/news-ideas/google-a...rch-operators/

    Private Messages: My inbox is forever filling up with PMs. Please don't send me PMs unless they are actually private/personal messages. General FG questions should be asked in the forums - don't be afraid, the FG community don't bite and you're giving everyone the chance to respond and learn!

    Thank you Trenloe, as always, you are a boon. (Not a ba-boon!)

    Follow-up question; there are two search links available in the interface, the Google powered search you show the results for which is found in the pull-down menu on the top left of the forum webpage. And the FG provided(?) search found in the search icon in the top right of the forum webpage. Is the FG provided search more useful in any use case? Is it so much easier to access, but should it be deprecated to the Google search?

    I use this to search for very recent posts, as there seems to be a lag of a few days before recent data appears in the google search.

    The FG website search also has additional parameters - such as posts by specific people, etc..

    The main issue with it is that words of less than 4 characters aren't searched on. So, 5E, D&D, etc. can't be used as search terms.

    Here is my 2 cents.

    In chrome (or at least google.com) type the following;

    site:fantasygrounds.com/forums "vtt art "

    You can leverage google to search site. This only looks for good forum content. And the quotation marks look for exact matches..

    You do realize that using the "Site Search" button on the menu bar uses Google to search the site, right?
