    Actually, we Australians (and the English - who's language it happens to be) spell it the correct way. Its only those "deviants"* from the other side of the world who insist on spelling *English* words the non-English way.

    Linguists will tell you that American English is closer to that spoken and written by the British at the time of King George III than modern varieties spoken and written in the Commonwealth today. We're more conservative, so we've changed the language less than you blokes have... :-)
