terrible picture for doing this to.
if you took the photo - next time do it against a solid blue or green background with good lighting...
here is a quick hack job.

Use the Fuzzy Select tool: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-fuzzy-select.html

    1. Enable a transparency layer: Layer -> Transparency-> Add Alpha Channel
    2. Use the Fuzzy Select tool (press u). Left-Click-and-hold on the background you wish to remove.
    3. Move the mouse up-and-down to increase/reduce the threshold - the area being selected will show dynamically, release when you've got a good selection.
    4. Press the "Delete" key to remove the selection.
    5. Use the above steps in other areas that need doing.
    6. Use the Eraser to tidy up any remaining areas: https://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tool-eraser.html
    7. Reduce the size of the token to something like 100x100 or 50x50.
    8. Save as a .PNG.

Could be a number of reasons. Make sure you have it selected (in eraser mode) and that you're using alpha channel to erase and leave transparency. See the first paragraph and figure 13.67 here: https://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tool-eraser.html

is there a way to have it think when it comes to a drastic border change to ignore it...like gold and black..to just erase the black when you swipe over it?

Another way to maybe save some work if you are using google to find images is to add render after the search term. Rpg fighter render for example. I find this will net a few results with already rendered (transparent bg) search by filetype .png helps too.
