Running in DM and Player Mode on same computer

I have it where I am able to connect the player and gm by using localhost, and it will send messages back and forth. The problem is I might be setting this up wrong this is for D&D 5E. I can't share Books between the GM and the Player instance, and I can't see my character. I created the character in local mode.
