Lost Mines of Phandelver (Play thru - Spoilers)

I wish to thank new to Fantasy Grounds veteran DM Hossman for hosting an introductory session to Lost Mines of Phandelver, a stepping block to his campaign Princes of the Apocalypse. Hector Trelane played Otadek the Unfriendly, a curmudgeon old roguish coot, that stirred up unnessary trouble in a local tavern that good-natured Oskar Thunderclap the cleric had to quell.

Our adventure continues with Thorwyn the noblewomen fighter, Jhereg the cryptic druid, Arrow the fiery mage, Oskar the overly optimistic cleric and of course Otadek the curmudgeon coot rogue as we set forward to deliver vital goods to Phandalin.

Along the way we foiled a goblin ambush and discovered that our benefactor and employer, Gundren Rockseeker who set forth on the journey earlier, has been captured. After some tracking and a bit of fighting with goblin sentries and wolves, we uncovered the cave where we believe Gunden is held captive by a powerful goblin leader.

Good fun was had with a couple first time FG players and a GM quickly mastering the tool sets. This time we also rolled in sounds by Syrinscape.

Our intrepid band of heroes learned that most valuable lesson of all last night, NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY!

In a series of mishaps and triumphs, we forged our way into the Cragmaw Hideout, discovering Karg the goblin leader’s lair. While the party was split, the goblins heard Thorwyn and leaped to attack. Otadek the meek took a mortal gash to the abdomen, falling to the ground, as Thorwyn was wounded in the fray. We decided the best course of action then was to RUNAWAY to regroup.

Outside the cave, Karg and his minions rushed to finish us off, however, we gained the upper hand, defeating the bugbear and his bodyguards. “Inspired” by our victory, we decided to press forward to take on the remaining goblins and retrieve our curmudgeon rogue companion Otadek.

We recovered Otadek, who surprisingly was still alive, however, Yemeek, the goblin’s second in command, took charge of the remaining goblins and rallied his minions against us. First Thorwyn our fighter was brought down, then Oskar the cleric followed by Jhereg the druid. Only Arrow our mage was able to sneak away unscathed.

Now we sit, tied and beaten, awaiting for the goblins to make us into stew…at least we found Gundren Rockseeker’s bodyguard Sildar, tied in the chamber next to us. :D

Epic indeed! No doubt Yemeek is thanking the raiders (i.e. PCs) for killing Klarg so he could complete his ascendance to powers. The goblin lieutenant has already proven himself more capable than the bugbear captain. It's up to Arrow to save us. Come back... come back, Arrow!

Note to self: LEARN GOBLIN to better understand the enemy's plans. Otadek will win through cunning, not by frontal assault.

I noticed that some of those assets weren't included with the original LMoP adventure in the starter set. Are all the pictures of Klarg, dungeon maps, etc included with the FG version of the module? If so that would be good value. :)

HOWEVER, the fallen monk Grimaldi was resurrected by the party's prayers to Oskar's deity. It's a Berronar Truesilver Miracle! All the goblins shout "BARNAR BARNAR!" It's a complicated story...

I don't get on here much, sorry for the delayed answer.

Klarg's picture was the default 'Bugbear' picture that was provided in the LMoP module. The party, at the time, didn't know what a bugbear really was, so I changed the label so that the players could see 'Klarg' and how different he was from the other goblins.

Individual pics of NPCs aren't really included. If you decide that this is something that you want to provide for your players then you would have to do some homework on your own and prep the pics to an easy to go to folder, or link them in your DM notes, etc.

The major dungeon maps are included and they have been altered to reflect the 5'x5' squares useable by PCs. I know that in the maps shown in the Princes of the Apocalypse book are all on a 10'x10' scale but in the FG version they've been altered to fit within the 5'x5' square. Much easier to incorporate with your stock adventure encounters and dungeon crawls.

You will need to have a library of random maps for your go to encounters.

One example is that In Phandelver, there is a brewhouse in Phandelver that acts as a hangout for the Redbrands. It will most likely become an encounter, but there is no stock map provided to run this scenario. Also, traveling and random encounters will probably require the DM to have some stock maps to go to.

It doesn't take much and if you don't have the time to make specific maps then a quick google search or Pinterest search will provide you with gobs of alternatives.

I'm still pretty much an apprentice DM with respect to FG. I have several players that are much more familiar with FG and I draw from them. We don't have the fastest paced game, but I don't think I keep the party waiting too long when they decide to follow an errant lead or decide to do the unexpected, like have a throw down in the middle of the street just because.

That is one scary-lookin' worm.

The Grick wasn't so much a problem. It's those pesky goblins with their nifty escape hitting us from afar and running off in all directions that's giving us trouble. Party had to regroup outside the castle to decide a better approach.

Now Gif, our loyal goblin companion and devout convert of Berronar Truesilver, took advantage of that ability and had his good share of hits! BARNAR! BARNAR!

Unfortunately the Grick never managed to actually hit any of the party members with its highest to hit roll being an 8, I believe. One of those RPG tropes that a competent opponent always ends up incompetent when the dice are rolled!

Not to mention Grimaldi's "elemental" breaking wind ability that helped to take down the Grick! Mighty? Perhaps but gassy indeed!

We had another great session hosted by GM Hossman! The party took on the heart of Cragmaw Castle rescuing their employer Gundren Rockseeker.

Thorwyn, Arrow and Jhereg were all on fire taking out foes with ease! Grimaldi even broke elemental-monk-wind killing Yegg the Butcher! Not to mention they had an owlbear that frightened poor Gif away. Oskar is beside himself with grief until the party retrieves their loyal goblin companion.

Yes, a good time! So frustrating when the baddies can't hit though, takes away from some of the suspense. Gif's continual failure on his morale rolls were somewhat mollifying though. Also the party destroying some of the ancient religious relics was amusing as well. I've always said that its the bad rolls that really make the game/story. Everyone wants to crit. but it's the failures that truly make the scene.

I also think we need to rename the Monk's ability to The Fists of Flatulence!

HUZZAH! Another great session hosted by DM Hossman! The party encountered several strange beasts, a whole lot of undead and faced their first FIREBALL. Fortunately, luck is with them as Gif the Goblin is now a confirmed member of the party!

The party tracked down a foul pair of so called displacer beasts (Arrow seemed to know what they were) terrorizing the local miners. Sadly, they were too late to save an unfortunate gnome miner they named Petkaspunter Goldshimmers (or some variation of the sorts), may he rest in peace.

Led by Grimaldi, the party enters the Wave Echo Caves, as they discover the skeletal remains of many dwarves and orc laid throughout the complex, the remnants of an ancient battle that took place centuries ago. More and more undead were aroused by the party's presence as Thorwyn increasingly gets irritated by the attacks...

Weary from battle, the party pushed further into the complex in search of secure location to hold up when a hoard of zombies led by an ominous floating Fiery Green Skull attacked. The Fiery Green Skull cursed out and threw a fireball down the passage. Everyone was weakened by the blast as Otadek, Arrow and Gif fall.

I haven't played this game yet.

Several sessions have passed since the last post. We have lost a couple of players, gained another and some have chosen new characters to play. Arrow our ginger mage, Thorwyn the dual wielding fighter and Oskar the socially awkward cleric of the original group remain, with new members Partha-Zan a fancy pants half-elf warlock (together with flying cat Timmah! a Tressym), Dookard a dubious rogue and our special companion Gif the goblin fighter/bard (“Beloved by Berronar Truesilver”)!

GM Hossman threw a fun encounter of Ankhegs at us while traveling the Long Road. Brought me back to Baldur’s Gate days! GOOD STUFF! :D

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*



A short update, several weeks (in-game) have past as The Heroes of Phandalin continue their adventures, wreaking havoc across the Dessarin Valley. The clues they have deciphered (correctly or not) have brought them deep beneath a certain keep located in the Dessarin Hills. A new friend being rescued from the clutches of cultists, Cati Keg the druid, has joined the intrepid party. During the thick of battle, Cati summons a flurry of poisonous snakes to challenge some adversaries; hopefully the snakes can tell friend apart from foe?
