Looking for advice on purchasing Fantasy Grounds for CoC, I have been playing since early days of first edition and want to get my buddies into it. Is it worth it and how easy is it for new comers to the game to jump in?

Welcome to the forums.
For me, Call of Cthulhu on Fantasy Grounds is completely worth it. But YMMV depending on exactly what you're expecting... Fantasy Grounds is a great VTT and I've never looked back since I've started using it. Both Call of Cthulhu rulesets (6e and 7e) are well implemented and allow you to easily play/run a game.
As CoC isn't one of the mainstream games, you may struggle to find a game to play in. If you run a game, I'm sure you'll have no problems finding players. As with most RPGs, you may have to work a little at finding a group that you enjoy playing with and has reliable members. Gaming on the Internet makes it easier for people to flake out. But, if you're planning on playing with your friends, you hopefully won't have that issue!
I strongly recommend the CoC 7e ruleset. It is fantastic and it is the only place where I run Call of Cthulhu games after I discovered this system.
You have all that a Keeper require to manage a game online - good level of automation, impact detection on skill rolls for weapons, daily loss of sanity for the group and etc. Combat tracker is automated with targeting and damage, has chase support with visual helpers along the way...
Money well spent.

As you know CoC is not like most other RPGs. Your characters are easily broken and beaten and even when they do everything right they may start clucking like chickens and flapping their arms as they waddle around the crime scene!
From the FG side of things (biased opinion here) the CoC ruleset does a pretty good job of facilitating the game play.
