Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition Ruleset

Hi all, just a quick update on progress of v1.1

The following features have already been completed:

* Added missing scroll control to career description
* Added current recharge value to condition card
* Added current recharge value to insantity card
* Added recharge token to desktop
* Added ability to drag and drop recharge token to any card that supports recharge

With regards to the issue around entering different recharge values for actions based on a conservative/reckless stance, the fix for this will require a change to the format of the library. In order to make this easier for everyone, I am writing a small tool that will automatically upgrade your library file for you.

For now, I recommend the following:

* For an action card where the recharge value is the same for both conservative and reckless, simply enter a single value.

* For an action card where the recharge value is different for conservative and reckless, enter the value in the format 2.3 (2 = conservative, 3 = reckless)

If you use this format, then my upgrade tool will be able to upgrade your library for you.

Hi Neil,

As you are working on the new version 1.1 of your ruleset, I stop for the moment to fill the action cards.

I started to fill all the items. And I encounter the same scrolling bug for the Description tag on Items Cards. It doesn't scroll and doesn't get the scroll icons.

As you already found why, I wanted you to know it before you release the new version. ;)

I have a few questions on Item in general :

What is the Craftmanship Tag mean to you ? Is it the Quality of a particular item ? Poor, Good, Superior and so on ?


Can I add some images in your library ?

I imagine having some important tables in the library so that I can refer to them quickly and easily. I don't know how to do that but hey you're the master here :p

I am new to Fantasy Grounds and using it to GM WFRP 3rd. When I am making alterations to the Library to build action cards e.t.c the module is not not available when I reload fantasy grounds. I am saving it in the same location as the existing modules, can you help?

Some questions first:

Did you create a modified copy of the original Neil Library Module with a different name and then copy your modified Library Module in the same folder ?

If Yes, do the two library files exist at the same time in the same folder ?

If Yes, remove the Neil original Library Module. Cause the two Library Module share the same definition.xml so they overwrite each other in Fantasy Grounds.

Maybe you are making the same mistake I was

When replacing
<exampleaction1>

</exampleaction1>

with
<Melee Strike>

It should be
<meleestrike>

When i first took a stab at editing, just getting that wrong caused the library to not show up at all.

Make sure when you zip the module back up to create the modified .mod file that you have not zipped the directory as well. This is a common problem with making/modifying .mod files. Make sure that you zip up the files from within the directory itself, not by zipping up the directory.

Good point, the XML may not be correct.

talsharien - load your module XML into an application that can check the XML syntax. Lots of people on the forums here recommend Notepad++ with the XML plugin - it's free.

Also check that you're not zipping up the directory in the .mod file (as I've suggested earlier).

Unfortunatley Fantasy Grounds doesn't give you much information if it can't load a module, so using a XML editor like Notepad++ (as Trenloe suggests) will help identify if there are any syntax issues in the file.

I also tend to use Fantasy Grounds own package utility for zipping and unzipping the module file. It never includes the directory in the zip file so thats one less thing to worry about. You can download the tool from the Downloads page on this site.

Yesterday I had entered all of the Tactic Talents and an error occurred. Since I knew the error was among these talents, I took them all out, pasted them to a separate file, and slowly started adding them back in until the error happened again. The only way I know of narrowing it down (it's hard to spot little mistakes).

I should probably get the Notepad++ with the XML plugin

I am developing an creator of this XML. The creation of the creatures are ready. when I finished, I'll post here.

All, I have released Version 1.1 of the ruleset. This release adds Inventions and Runes from Black Fire Pass, Followers (ie. Pets and Horses) from The Adventurers Toolkit and Omens of War, plus some other stuff. I have updated the original post in this thread.

Note: There has been a change to the database format used by the ruleset in order to allow both Reckless and Conservative recharge values to be specified for action cards.

You campaigns will automatically be upgraded once you have updated the ruleset. I recommend that you backup your campaigns prior to upgrading the ruleset just in case of any problems.

I have provided a simple tool which you can use to assist in upgrading your library modules. This tool can be downloaded from the same location as the ruleset. Again, I recommend making a backup of your library module before trying to upgrade it, in the event of any problems

Running the upgrade tool, I get the error "The specified file does not appear to be a valid XML document"

Any suggestions?

Are you running the tool against the mod file itself? At present, the upgrade tool does not extract the mod file for you - you will need to extract the mod file and point the upgrade tool at the common.xml file.

If you have already done that, then it suggests that there may be an error in the common.xml file - that error occurs when an invalid xml document is loaded - so before the upgrade is attempted.

In addition, the only change that has occurred is to the action cards - if you have not entered any action cards yet into your library, then no upgrade is required.

All good, turns out I had a few '&' characters and such like about the place that FG didn't complain about. Tidied up, then worked fine.

The library is flexible enough to allow you to create any new sections that you like. You could place your witchcraft cards as a new section under spells.

To add a witchcraft section to spells, you could add the following section under the 'spells' node, straight after the light spells:

<witchcraft>
<name type="string">Witchcraft</name>
<entries>
.....
</entries>
</witchcraft>

The ruleset supports any number of levels in the library, and as many items as you like at each level. Simply add a new section like the one above to make it appear.

For now I'll just add it to the colour orders, since that is where FFG listed Dark Magic.

I'd like to split off the Creatures, Creature Groups and Nemesis Groups off to a separate library so I can control visibility to the players. What is the best method?

I've tried two ways, and am not sure which to use. First I exported a module and simply cut and paste in the library entries.
Second, I opened up a 3.5 module and changed its definition.xml to point to wfrp rules set and gutted out most of the db.xml and replaced with what I wanted. Both methods seemed to work though I'd like to know if there is a best practice.

Oh BTW is this a bug, or something I have done wrong?: The skills, once drag and dropped to a character all revert characteristic type STR, so all rolls from them are strength

I would split your library into two seperate library modules, a players library and a GM's library. Simply take your current library, copy it, and then strip out the items from either library depending on if you want to visible to the players or GM.

The only other change you would need to make is to edit the definition.xml file in each library in order to give them a unique name.

Using this method the GM would be able to load both the Player and GM library in order to have access to both, but only set the player library to be loaded for the players.

I haven't upgraded to the latest yet (scared I am going to screw things up), but I'm wondering if you noticed this bug and already fixed it:

I was making new creature groups and noticed when I reopened the module, the pre-made beastmen that were in the "Day Late" addition were being added to my monster groups. I have to keep that library shut in order for them not to be added.

Yes, enjoying the ruleset very much, i've even started to reskin it and add minimized icons of all the action card types s to add to that tabletop feel. Also helps visually remind players if they have wound cards on the desktop, rather than bured in a tab. Actually, one bottle neck i have found in play is clicking through the action card types on players char sheets, maybe a window that lists all the characters and their actions regardless of type would be usefull. let me know if you are interested in a mock up.
In a blue sky ideal, the window would represent the players as a schematic with all cards as nodes for easy click access, but a simple list would suffice :)

Are you exporting your own module using the export facility? If so, then you will need to ensure that the "Day Late" module is not loaded otherwise its details will get merged into your own module.

I agree that the little radio buttons for cycling through the different action cards/conditions/etc is slow. Perhaps something similar to the library screen would work better? A list of the different card types down one side and the ability to drill down to specific cards?

In my mind I picture something you don't have to drill down too much. A window that shows a list of all the cards associated with a character at a glance, ideally with the current recharge displayed too. Actually it could be a tab on the character sheet. But I think what you're suggesting could be cool for the GM, a library, drill-down style list of all the active characters, npcs, party sheet with sublists of attached cards. I think it would be important that it just listed cards that are actually in play in someway.

Btw I've been playing around with the format of the Action Cards in an attempt to reduce the number of tabs to three, I find players get a little lost on the four tabs, will shoot you an example when I get it looking ok

So I purchased the ultimate license based on Doswelk's excellent tutorials for savage worlds and Neil's excellent work on WHFR ruleset.

As is common, my group is far flung and difficult to pin down and I really wanted to play WHFR badly!

So I got the ruleset loaded and I am making my entries into the library .mod file. It is going slow but well, only adding the actions and entries etc. that I am using at the present time.

Some of questions:

1. Is there a way to make a dice pool from an action card? Ie. I choose to use Melee Strike and it makes the appropriate dice pool that I can drop into the pool creation box? (the brown box above the dice). There are entries for misfortune, challenge, fortune and expertise for each action card entry.

2. Can you make new action card types like teamwork, basic, defense that are attributes of an action but not currently in the ruleset?

3. How does slotting a talent work? Maybe I missed something along the way. There is an area on the character sheet, but I cannot seem to make it work? The party sheet allows it by clicking on the talent slot type, it generates an empty slot. On the career card there are talent slots that you can click to change, but they don't affect the character sheet, at least mine doesn't.

I'll probably have more, but I just dove in today for the first time. Excellent work on this ruleset! I'm looking forward to running some games.

Not at the moment. It is something on my list of things to add in a future version of the ruleset.

Because I'm new to this software, the next question I have is rather general.

Is the only time that you have active character tokens, in the upper left, when you have active players connected to the game?

Yes. As GM you can create and edit characters but their portraits only appear when a player is connected. Note that a player can use more than one character, so one portrait will appear for each character a player is using.

You can test how the ruleset works for players by running FG twice on the same machine. Run it once and start a campaign as GM, then run FG a second time and join your campaign.

This way you can switch between the windows to see how the ruleset looks for both GM and players.

Thank you for that info, I'll try tonight.

Something I noticed this AM when I was putting together an adventure into the story section. When I was trying to get focus on a specific section of text, it was selecting text below where my cursor was hovering. I also could not click in a text area to edit the field easily.

I'm hoping that it will correct itself upon restarting the application and it was just a minor glitch.

I have the WHFR font extension enabled if that makes any difference.

Hey Neil, quick note to say I downloaded and looked at the WFRP ruleset. Like the dice hacks and use of library module for cards ! Not a WFRP player, but always nice to see what others have done with the FGII engine :) nice one

After a little break for the festive season and the arrival of a new addition to the family, I thought I'd post to let people know that development of the ruleset will be picking up again as I get back into the swing of things.

The plan for the next release is to address any issues that have been raised, add support for the dice symbols throughout the ruleset, plus add support for the new rules introduced in Lure of Power. Hopefully I will get this done pretty soon as I have finally managed to crack the dice symbols.

I've noticed that the file we add data to is now called client.xml instead of common.xml. I see updates in the client.xml but certain things I don't see updated (such as a traits entry for the party sheets examples)

Though when I run the upgrade it remains a common.xml and entries such as "Follower" aren't updated to "Companions"

Am I doing it wrong?

I have renamed the file client.xml in order for the library to be visible in the 'Manage Character' mode of FG.

I have forgotten to update the upgrade tool to perform the checks for the changes that I made to the followers. I have split them out so instead of 'Follower' you have 'Pet', 'Horse' and 'Retainer'. I will update the upgrade tool and the example library ASAP.
