Fantasy Grounds Message Boards FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Should I buy now or wait for Fantasy Grounds Unity?

That is a question that only you can answer. To help you, here are some details to consider:

  • The current version of Fantasy Grounds will be changed to Fantasy Grounds Classic (FGC).
  • FGC will continue to work on Windows and Mac OSX platforms that support 32-bit applications.
  • Fantasy Grounds Unity (FGU) is a 64-bit application that will feature native support for Windows, Mac (and eventually Linux)
  • DLC, add-ons and custom created modules, extensions and rulesets built for FGC will work with FGU.
  • You don't have to re-purchase any add-ons for FGU.
  • FGC users will not be able to connect to games with FGU users, and vice versa.
  • FGC has around 175K users. FGU has 8500 who will gain access at launch from the Kickstarter.
  • Subscribers to FGC will be able to terminate their subscription to FGC and start a subscription to FGU -- or keep their old sub.
  • Users who own both FGC and FGU will be able to run either platform to join or host games.
  • We plan to offer some discounts for buyers of FGU if they already own a non-subscription version of FGC. It won't be as good as it was during the limited-time Kickstarter campaign.
  • We are no longer taking pledges for the Kickstarter. Those ended on May 31st, 2019.
  • The target release date for FGU was December 2019, but it has been updated to Q1 2020. The final release date depends on the success of the Closed Beta testing phase.
  • The Closed Alpha testing phase began on August 7, 2019.
  • The Closed Beta testing phase began on October 28, 2019.

Over time, we expect to see more and more people move from FGC to FGU. This transition may take some time. FGC is very stable and well supported. FGU has many great new features not possible in FGC, but it isn't as mature of a program as FGC.

I've lost my license key.

If you purchased from the Fantasy Grounds Store and chose to save your order details on your account, you can retrieve your license from the Order History section of the Fantasy Grounds store. Please note that you must be logged in to access your Order History. You can log in here.

Otherwise, please contact us at support.fantasygrounds.com (preferred) or send an e-mail to [email protected] with the following information:

  • Store you purchased the software from
  • E-mail address you used when you purchased the software
  • Your username on the website/forums

Note: As license key retrieval includes several manual cross-checks, you should allow us up to 24 hours to process the case.

How can I demo Fantasy Grounds?

Any version of Fantasy Grounds can be used to demo the product.

  • For Unregistered/Lite installations, select the Host Demo option on the launcher screen.
  • For Full license installations, a single unregistered user can connect to your hosted game, which triggers a demo mode automatically.
  • For Ultimate license installations, unregistered users can always connect to your hosted games.

Demonstration campaigns are available for the 3.5E/PFRPG/4E and 5E game systems. They will be installed automatically by the Fantasy Grounds web installer, and they are also available in the Downloads section of the Fantasy Grounds website. To experience the best possible demo, we recommend signing up for a monthly subscription of the Ultimate license and using the 30-day money back guarantee if you are at all dissatisfied. You will be able to host games for an unlimited number of players as long as the subscription is active and you will get full access to all of the content that comes pre-loaded for Fantasy Grounds, such as several hundred tokens of monsters, characters and animals, and a smaller subset of the licensed content from Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition. When you are done demoing the product, you can cancel the subscription or keep it going. Simply email [email protected] if you wish to request a refund in full for any purchases.

Can I upgrade my license?

Upgrades are available from a Lite license to a Full license, as well as from a Full license to an Ultimate license.

Please see the Fantasy Grounds store for purchase options.

How can I reinstall a Lite to Full upgrade license?

Fantasy Grounds 2.8.1 or earlier only

First, you need to install Fantasy Grounds using the installer in the Downloads section of the website. You will need to use your original Lite license key when running the installer.

Then, download the upgrade utility from your Order History on the Fantasy Grounds store. Run the upgrade utility, and provide your Upgrade license key.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any issues.

Can I run the software on two computers with one license (i.e. laptop and desktop)?

The EULA states that you have a license to use one copy of the software on any one system and that the license is not transferable to any other system. In other words you are not allowed to install the software on several computers. The software itself cannot tell what computer it is running on and as long as no two players in a game are using the same license, the software will assume the above to be true.

How do I transfer Fantasy Grounds to my new computer?

First, you will need to download the most current installer from the Downloads section of the website. Then, locate your license key(s). If you have lost your license key, then check the appropriate FAQ. Next, run the installer using your license key.

Next, copy everything from the Fantasy Grounds application data folder on the original computer to the equivalent location on the new computer. You can access these locations using the "Application Data Folder" link under Start -> Programs -> Fantasy Grounds II.

Troubleshooting the update utility

Fantasy Grounds v2.8.1 package manifest error

Most errors are related to network connection issues or instability. Trying again fixes the majority of the issues although some people have reported during busy times that they had to try 5 or 6 times to get through.

Fantasy Grounds v2.8.1 empty package listing

If, when running the updater, you only see two lines:

Getting package listing
Done!

This implies that your license key is not correctly registered, or there is a problem on the update server regarding your license. When entering your license, please make sure it is correctly entered, including uppercase characters and dashes.

You can, at this time, confirm your license key by doing the following:

1. Open the start menu, select run (Windows XP) or start search (Windows Vista)
2. Enter the command "regedit" and press enter
3. On the left side of the Registry Editor window navigate to: "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Fantasy Grounds\2.0"
4. On the right side, you should see a list of values including one named "LicenseKey".
5. Check that the value matches your license.
6. If the value does not match, double click on the value name, and enter your license key with dashes in the "Value data" edit box that appears. Click OK.
7. Close the Registry Editor.

On rare occasions, a license key is actually locked if we find that it has been broadcast on the Internet or linked to torrents or pirate sites.

If you need further assistance with the procedure, or if the problem still presists, please contact [email protected] by e-mail, as we will need to check your license details for any possible errors on the update server. Please include the original e-mail address used to purchase the license, if possible.

Fantasy Grounds v2.9

The updater will provide you with error information regarding any update issues. Please double-check your license key in the updater Settings dialog, and try again. If the problem persists, then please post in the House of Healing forum or send an e-mail to [email protected].

What is different between a subscription and a non-subscription license?

Subscriptions give you the same functionality and all the same content as the one-time purchase licenses, but allow you to pay a low monthly fee instead of buying it outright. The monthly fee doesn't ever accumulate towards paying a one-time fee or allow upgrades at a cheaper rate, so please consider this before continuing a subscription for any extended length of time. The monthly fee will be charged each month on your anniversary date and your license will remain active during this time, unless it is canceled through Paypal.

As soon as you cancel your subscription through Paypal (see that section), our server will be notified of the cancellation and will deactivate your account. You will lose all Ultimate license functionality and the ability to re-install or update using that key. You will still keep all your campaigns and other creations. If you choose to later acquire a one-time license or to renew your subscription, all of your creations will still be available. The only thing which will be different will be your license key.

I don't see my subscription key in my Order History. Where can I get the key?

The monthly subscriptions are handled by Paypal as Recurring Payment Plans. When you subscribe from this site, Paypal creates a new Recurring Payment Plan and then emails us whatever email address you have marked as the Primary Email Address within Paypal. This may be different than the email address you used for registering on our website, and if this is the case, your license key will not be displayed in the Order History and you will only receive an email.

If you don't have access to that email address, you can do the following:

  • Log into Paypal and cancel the Recurring Payment Plan that was just created (use the steps above)
  • Edit your Paypal Profile and add a new Email Address
  • Edit the new Email Address and mark it as the Primary address
  • Now you can edit or delete the old address
  • Re-subscribe within Fantasy Grounds to create a new Recurring Payment plan linked to the new Primary address

If this process causes you to incur any additional payments, please contact us at support.fantasygrounds.com or email a copy of your receipt from Paypal to [email protected] and we would be happy to help.

Can I set up multiple subscription accounts with the same Paypal account?

Yes, you can have multiple accounts.

  1. Start a new subscription regularly for the 1st account
  2. Start a 2nd subscription in the same way to have it associated with the same user account at fantasygrounds.com
  3. From here, you can gift the 2nd subscription to another user account from the Store > Order History page. You must gift the subscription within 7 days of purchase.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are handled directly in PayPal. When linked to your account, you can locate them by visiting Store > Order History. You can cancel them from there. If the subscription does not show up on your account, you can add it by providing the Profile ID and your Primary PayPal Email address, then click on the Add Unlinked Subscription. If you prefer, you can also cancel directly within PayPal. To do this, log into your Paypal account and then go to Settings and then Preapproved Payments.

You can also log in to Paypal on another tab and then try this link to go there directly: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_manage-paylist

If you are replacing a subscription license with a one-time, permanent license, then please see this note. You should have already switched to your new license key within your Fantasy Grounds application Settings and ran an update prior to cancellation if you are replacing your subscription with a permanent license. This will ensure that you don't have any interruption of service.

What if I don't see my subscription under Pre-approved Payments?

This can happen if you chose to checkout as a Guest within PayPal. Your subscription is only linked to your email address and your Credit Card (or payment source). In order to cancel this type of subscription, you should visit support.fantasygrounds.com and request cancellation. Alternatively, you can email a cancel request to [email protected] and provide your email address. We can cancel the subscription and issue any refunds for recent charges, if needed.

Do I need to cancel my subscription if I buy a 1-time license?

Yes, you still need to cancel the subscription from your Store > Order History page or with PayPal.

If you don't do this, you will continue to get billed as part of the Recurring Payment or Guest Checkout Subscription you have set up with PayPal. Follow the instructions above on how to cancel the recurring payment and then update your Settings within Fantasy Grounds to use the new license key. After replacing the license key and running a Check for Updates, you will be able to resume use of the software with all your existing purchases and campaigns intact. If you have any problems, contact us at support.fantasygrounds.com (preferred) or email us at [email protected] and we would be happy to help.
