Hey everyone.

I just wanted to do a State of the Fantasy Grounds Union blog. At least for me.

For anyone who has heard my name, you know that I am HEAVILY involved in the community. Fantasy Grounds really did save my life, see previous blog entry.

As 2019 closes out, I have been reflecting on what exactly my involvement has been in the last 4 years...

This will seem (and perhaps is intended to be) a bit self-congratulatory but only because it really is amazing to me what I have been able to accomplish in the last 4 years.

I found the software in September 2015 and was very excited to learn about it and use it. I bought EVERYTHING that was available at the time for the D&D 5E ruleset and the Ultimate license, it was a few hundred bucks. The NEXT DAY (I mean in less than 24 hours) it ALL went on sale. I couldn't believe my (lack of) luck. I emailed this dude, Doug Davison, I found his name on the forums. He was kind enough to give me a full refund and then I just repurchased everything at the sale price. Well, needless to say, this made me a CUSTOMER for life!

But then things progressed...

I started playing games. I thought, maybe I'll stream these games on Twitch. In October 2015 I "turned on" Twitch. I'm old (49 at the time), I don't know how to do it, I just did it. Just push the button. 4 years later, I still really don't know what I'm doing. My streams and YouTube videos are not highly produced or edited. They're just kind of "there". But my small little following seems to enjoy...

So far I have 900+ videos on YouTube, almost all of them multi-hour gaming sessions using Fantasy Grounds (and mostly D&D 5E).

In November 2016, I started a Discord server. That's now up to over 600 members. This is just people who like to hang out and talk to me (and each other mostly HA!).

I also began to produce items for the DMs Guild in January 2016, and since then have collaborated with over 100 other creators helping them to bring their creations to the Fantasy Grounds format. I also have a "team" of people I produce with:

Online Name (DMs Guild Name)

Mattekure (John Waite)
WalkinDude (Shuan Sides)
Marbanya (Liam MacGregor)
DiabloBob (DiabloBob)

There are now (as of this blog) 183 products on DMs Guild. Also, (shameless plug), on DEC 24th and 25th 2019 - 48 HOURS ONLY! - I will have the "Rob Twohy Fantasy Grounds INSANITY [BUNDLE]" on sale. This is EVERY SINGLE ITEM on DMs Guild I have ever produced at 75% off. If you already own any of my items, it will give you credit for them and reduce the price. This really is INSANE!

I also have 47 items in the FantasyGrounds.com and STEAM websites (as I also became a community developer for them).

Here is the public projects list, including upcoming projects.

Since I was such a fan and heavy personal promoter of the software, that same dude I mentioned before (Doug Davison president of SmiteWorks) decided to hire me as one of the social media managers on February 1st, 2018. I am the main person who handles the Tweets and the Twitters. I also produce the #FantasyGroundsFriday tips everyone sees on Twitter and Facebook each week.

I started a Patreon Page, a shitty website rob2e.com, and have just generally been having a LOT OF FUN interacting with the Fantasy Grounds community.

In August 2019 I attended the Fantasy Grounds Kickstarter Launch Party. It was fun, even though it HAD TO BE in Orlando, Florida. FLORIDA - the anus of the world. It was nice to connect with the entire staff and some other users. Unity is gonna KILL IT!

I would like to thank all of you who have supported me (in whatever way you have) and hope to enjoy doing this for you for many years to come.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

Hey, everyone.

Those that know me already have this information, but some may not know...

Three years ago in August 2014, I had a liver transplant. While I was under the knife for 11 hours, my mother passed away. DURING SURGERY! Amazing. Tragic.

I had my surgery in Seattle, I was in the hospital 58 days. I came back to Spokane on Thanksgiving 2014 and proceeded to start my recovery through the holidays. I spent the first 3/4 of 2015 "looking into what I should do with my life". Mostly in my mind. I was a professional stand-up comedian and actor for 15 years. That was over now. Los Angeles was out of my system and I was very happy with the idea of living in my home town of Spokane. But I needed something TO DO!

Along comes Fantasy Grounds, and I became interested immediately! I had played D&D since 1981 and had never heard of Fantasy Grounds. I was ALL IN. As a matter of fact, I purchased the Ultimate License, and all the 5E material available from WotC at the time. This was September 2015. I was in for a few hundred dollars. The very next day, everything in the store went on sale. Had I waited a few hours, I could have saved myself a lot of money. I was heartbroken at my timing (being a comedian and all).

I emailed Doug Davison and explained I had just made a major purchase the day before the sale. Doug refunded my entire purchase and allowed me to rebuy everything at the sale price. Wow! I was hooked for life.

Not only was this a great software application for a Virtual Tabletop, but the people running Smiteworks (and the community for it) was great. I became involved.

I started to enter games, getting to know people and turned all of that into what it is today:

I stream 6 days a week on Twitch exclusively Fantasy Grounds D&D 5E

I have over 30 items published on the DMs Guild and only one of them does not have a Fantasy Grounds component (including collaborations with other authors)

I currently have 14 titles in the Smiteworks store that I developed from third party companies (with more to come)

I have developed a Discord community and have collaborated with other DMs and players on various things

I'm even in a game with Doug Davison himself (Wednesday nights - Tales from the Yawning Portal)

So I found something to do! I have a purpose I absolutely love!

And tonight I will be clicking refresh refresh refresh at 9 pm PT because "Tomb of Annihilation"!

A big thank you to Doug Davison, Smiteworks, the community, and my fans! You all saved my life!

Hey, everyone. Been away from the blog for a few months. Busy, busy!

For those that don't know, on Wednesday Nights, there is a D&D 5E Game of Tales from the Yawning Portal being played live on Twitch. This game has a DM and 6 players.

We call ourselves The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Personnel:

Doug Davison (president of Smiteworks / Fantasy Grounds)
The Digital Dungeon Master (Twitch broadcaster)
FSHSchmo (Twitch Broadcaster)
GeoQuester (Twitch broadcaster)
PraetorsRejects (Twitch Broadcaster)
CJ (a cool dude who streams in his heart)
and me - Rob2e (Twitch broadcaster)

Each of the seven of us is rotating DMing each of the TftYP modules. We just completed The Sunless Citadel where Doug tried to kill us all, and I did have to go to the ER in real life and spend 6 days in the hospital the night of our first session. You have to REALLY WORK HARD to get inspiration from Doug.

The previous sessions are available on my YouTube channel if you'd like to catch up, but we certainly invite you to come by and check us out and chat us up.

Wednesday nights at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET at twitch.tv/rob2e

Hope to see you there!

...via email, etc. that I am not doing a good job of advertising my wares at the DMs Guild. I thought I was doing a pretty good job, what with Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, and these forums, but apparently the "why didn't I know about this" emails keep coming my way. All items can be found by clicking the DMs Guild in my signature below.

In an effort to make it known what I've done in the last 13 months - here's the scoop:

2016

2017

Random Encounter Creator - FG MOD ONLY (Over 1000 tables to create random encounters for every level with party sizes 3-7 PCs from several monster "books" including SRD, DMG, ToB, etc.)

Random Trap Tables - FG MOD ONLY (Includes 276 NPC traps that can be used in the Combat Tracker for every level and either setback, dangerous, or deadly)

For those of you that have never heard of me or my DMs Guild items, please check them out. Talk to anyone in the FG Community who uses them. Very happy people. With the exception of "Unknown Whom" and "The Defier" most of my items are utility in nature. Many DMs and players have expressed their joy with my creations. Hopefully, you will as well.

For those of you who are already familiar, this is the current status as of this posting.

ThanX again to all who support these efforts.

In the works:

A sequel to Unkown Whom
Expanding Wild Magic to 200 (current users will be updated free)
Expanding Crit/Fumble to 200 (current users will be updated free)
More Conditions and Effects (current users will be updated free)
Other stuff I can think of, but more importantly other stuff YOU GUYS can think of. What do people need/want?

Twitch contacted me a few weeks ago and explained they were wanting to spotlight RPG channels, and would I be interested. It entailed being featured on the front page of the Twitch website for two hours. I said sure. I prepared my Twitch channel, made sure all my proper links were set up, got a chat command to point people to fantasygrounds.com when they would inevitably ask, "What is this? What program are you using?"

It was crazy. I topped out at 1,258 concurrent viewers, and number of chatters was in the high 70s. Total views was a whopping 18,920. Wow!

I sent a LOT of people to fantasygrounds.com, I got 47 new followers to my Twitch channel, and many new people interested in D&D 5E.

Now that I'm broadcasting 6 days a week on Twitch, I hope to continue to champion FG and it's 5E ruleset!

This uniquely styled adventure involves players starting out with little information about the characters they will play. No characters are prepared in advance. This is a nonstandard method of play. Player characters only know their names, ability scores, race, and background. This adventure was created to give the feeling we got as kids just starting out with D&D. It will be great for new players and seasoned vets alike. Let the chaos begin…

Well, I did it. I built a 5E module in Fantasy Grounds using a PDF that I created for an original adventure. It was an experimental process to see if I could become my own quasi developer. Since this was an experiment, I didn't record (video) the process. If everything turns out okay, I will henceforth record and share the entire process from beginning to end on my future projects (and perhaps retrospectively on this one).

My intent was to create additional material for the Dungeon Masters Guild.

I will explain what has happened so for and how it will culminate in the GREATEST EVENT OF ALL--ahhh, never mind that. I get excited about stuff.

My basic process for creation:

Came up with an original adventure idea (although mine's a bit cliche', but whatever).

Wrote it down, fleshed it out, etc. (A continual process that never ends.)

Put the information into a near perfect quasi WotC aesthetic using The Homebrewery, caution - only works CORRECTLY using Chrome.

Created and added all maps and graphics.

Converted to a PDF (The Homebrewery does that for you).

Submitted it to editors.

Used the PDF to make the Fantasy Grounds module. (I couldn't wait for the editors to scrutinize, I was too excited and figured I'd make changes retroactively.)

Play test the adventure.

Make adjustments and corrections and finalize everything.

Upload the PDF to the DMs Guild and make the FG MOD available.

Be the "Hero of the Day?"

Fantasy Grounds comes equipped with some fine generic maps. They're great. They include some wilderness, some dungeon looking ones, etc. At a certain point after doing so much theater of the mind, or using the maps included with FG, it becomes time to use others.

FG is great in that you can use any image for a map in the game. All you need do is drop the image in the "images" folder under which ever campaign folder you want it in. You can grab any image from the interwebs, or make your own. I made such a map for "general encounter" just to add a little flavor for what my players haven't seen. I dropped it in the campaign images and opened it, applied a grid, and we were ready to go.
It's great fun to build maps. I did this one in Photoshop. It's even MORE fun to be able to use them in your games with FG (5E in this case).

Visual space is always more appealing to me and my players than theater of the mind. Here's hoping you have a map for every encounter!

Warning: Lost Mine of Phandelver spoilers!

Well, we did our first session of game play of LMoP (for my biweekly Monday IRL group) using FG as DM and having one additional laptop set up as a local connect for the player map. None of the players had ever used FG and this is my method of trying to transition them to using it. My group that has been together on and off since 2009, has been resistant to 5E and VERY RESISTANT to the use of FG as a VTT. They're old school, and want to play face to face with dice, pencil, and paper. That's preferable I guess, if available, but I couldn't help wanting to use the software to enhance MY DMing, and hopefully their game play.

So they would roll initiative, I would enter them in the CT and let the players roll all their checks, (death) saves, initiatives, attacks, etc. with real dice. I would then enter the damage (or whatever) results in the CT. I would roll all the monster attacks, saves, etc. using FG and tell the players the results. I had the local (player) screen as a map only, but sometimes, I would move the map to expose the chat window so I could prove that i really did roll a critical hit.

"Computer dice!!! No fair!", came the shouts. Of course. And the laughs.

Having been very familiar with 4E, my players are coming along the learning curve for 5E. Advantage, disadvantage, all the new stuff. They thought the map shading was cool, and they (being used to minis on a table grid) started to see the value of the electronics of it all. "Move me one square above him." I'll run back behind the corner on the right."

We made it work. I was pleased to keep track of the initiative and have my info behind my laptop (DM screen). I would read the story elements, and ask the players what they wanted to do leading them only when absolutely necessary. I still have to get them into the mind set of not taking a long rest after every encounter. They burned all their spells and then want them all back. Even the wizard complains about arcane recovery only giving him one of his two slots back. Sheesh!

I explained that 5E and LMoP was supposed to be challenging (and therefore more fun) and not the math and science seminar that 4E was. I will say that in each encounter so far, the goblin ambush, as well as the entire goblin hideout, there was at least one character making death saving throws in every single encounter. They thought they were all gonna die each time I said, "Roll initiative." But as a DM, that's fine with me if they feel that way.

Nobody ended up dead. They learned the value of short rest HD, the goodberry spell, and 5E combat tactics. The party leveled up to 2, so next time, it'll be a little easier, and they'll have a little more confidence.

Pleasing to me, was that 2 out of 4 told me they thought the map (and what FG can do) seemed pretty cool. Half is pretty good for the group of sourpusses I play with. HA!

We all had fun though and FG was a big part of it.

So until we meet again (and I try and kill them)... :)

My group that plays Princes of the Apocalypse Fridays at noon pacific time had our greatest, funniest, most epic session yet, yesterday (3.25.16). Durring episode 19 of our campaign, things got crazy.

A little background... I started DMing this game (my first DMing with FG) on November 6th, 2015. We do four hour sessions. The player group has settled to four players. David (Gimmerick) from Texas, Tom (Zook) from Germany, Blaine (Lordaron) from England, and Ron (Aramon) from New York. Then there's me, Rob from Spokane, WA. During yesterday's session, Ron was uncharacteristically absent, so it was the 6th level fighter, and the two 5th level paladins. If you haven't yet played PotA, this might be a bit of a spoiler, but not really. You'll see what I mean in a second.

The main epic craziness came from our use of the d100 crit/fumble table I created for the community. During a battle sequence, I kept rolling 20s against the party. It was unbelievable. You'll hear the screams, gasps, and laughter if you watch the video!

So as the players were traipsing thorough the Temple of the Howling Hatred, they came upon a plaza where there were, as of yet, two unopened doors, and the open plaza area. The plan was for Zook and Gimmerick to simultaneously open the two doors, while Lordaron went further into the plaza to keep watch. Well you can imagine, this wasn't the best plan. Too fun(ny)!

The doors get opened, inside one of the two separate rooms where these doors lead was a cloaker. Nasty creature. Lordaron found a group of kenku patrolling the hallways near the plaza. ROLL INITIATIVE! The encounter started to unfold with the cloaker mirror imaging itself after moaning and now there four of them. Lordaron was attempting to deal with the kenku while Gimmerick joined Zook against the cloaker(s). This is where it just plain gets nuts.

There had been a few 1s and a few 20s so far. Both DM and players. But I rolled a crit, it triggered the table (3 thru 6 on a d6), and up came number 93. This brings out a neutral monster of a CR equal to the lowest party member. So I opened the Monster Manual in FG, saw there were 35 CR 5 choices, and (because FG is so awesome) I rolled a d35. That command was "/die d35". The result was a 33 and so out came the wraith. 33rd alphabetically on the list.

The wraith proceeded to turn one of the (by this time) dead kenku into a specter. Yow! The wraith then life drained Lordaron who had been quite injured by this point, and the life drain took Lordaron's HP down below his current level. Man down! Upon seeing this Gimmerick and Zook decide their best action is to shut themselves in the room with four cloakers rather than face the wraith. Lordaron failed a death save, and by the next time it came around, he of course rolled a 1 killing him. Not just unconscious, but dead dead. Seizing its opportunity, the wraith turned Lordaron into a specter.

As this heated battle pressed on, not only did the crit/fumble table trigger again, but it was another 93. UNBELIEVABLE! So back to the MM I go to search for another CR 5. d35 in fact gives me 35, so out comes the the young remorhaz (which we affectionately referred to as Emilio Estevez). This thing comes into the area, and now there's all kinds of kenku, two specters, a wraith, four cloakers, two remaining party members, and a situational FUBAR!

It was so much fun.

FG allowed me to use the d100 crit/fumble table I created to add to the already awesome module for PotA. I used the MM to pull out the two random monsters, and throw them into the encounter. I was able to use the "any die" function to roll a d35. And we had the most fun we've ever had. I was crying I was laughing so hard at one point. Too bad Ron missed it.

I'll leave it to the video for you if you'd like to see how it all played out...

If you enjoy the video I hope you'll subscribe to my YouTube Channel and feel free to drop by my twitch channel as well at twitch.tv/rob2e.

As always I welcome your comments and questions.

Happy gaming! Especially with FG and the 5E rule set.

This refers to the 5E rule set for Fantasy grounds...

I viciously mocked that ghoul, but he doesn't have disadvantage on his next attack?

This is a common thing that happens in FG. In some cases, when spell casters drag spells onto their character sheets, FG doesn't parse the spell entirely (or at all). I pray to his unholiness Asmodeus, that one day FG will parse EVERYTHING properly for those of us lazy people. But in some cases, you can make your life (and especially your DM's life) easier if you take a few swipes at learning how FG effects work. A great place to start is the effects page.

In the case of Vicious Mockery, the spell gives you the cast for the saving throw of the monster, and it also provides the damage roll should it fail, but it does not have the distvantage on the mobs next turn effect. You have to build that. So you need to create an effect and in the description type "Vicious Mockery; DISATK". You would also need to set the expend to "On Next Action". Then your spell will look like this...

Attachment 13474

A thing to keep in mind about automation is that FG can't ALWAYS help. One example is the when a PC has the condition "Paralyzed" for example, FG doesn't apply the automatic crital damage for being within 5ft because FG doesn't know your distance to your target. So in some cases, you still have to exercise your "manual adjustment" ways.

Once you learn how to automate things that need automating that aren't already done for you (which in most cases they are), your life in playing 5E on FG will become a dream. It's really so nice to have the software handle things that players/DMs might forget or overlook. Really a great thing.

So next time you get ready to cast your Sleep spell, you still need to roll the 5d8 and let the DM figure out who to put to sleep, but you can help the DM out by also adding "Prone" as an effect in addition to the "Unconscious" that is already there.

The more you play, the more you learn about effects and automation.

Fantasy Grounds is a REALLY POWERFUL tool!

Here's to your next fully automated take down of whatever your DM throws at you!

Hi Gang.

I started playing D&D in 1981. I was 15 years old. In my first campaign, my friends and I knew nothing, so we had a guest DM (a 12 year old) who was willing to run a game for us. I made a Magic User (with 4 HP) and as we started our first game, we were wandering down a village street when the DM handed me a hand written note. It read, "You have been hit with a crossbow bolt. You are dead. Please do not react to any of the other players." I of course immediately stood up and yelled, "This game sucks!"

As I was storming out of the room, my friends all pleaded with me to stay. They begged the DM to assure me that it was a joke. He assured me it was not. We agreed to start over, and he agreed to not kill anybody in the first 30 seconds. The game became fun. I haven't looked back (until now).

When I was in the Army, and in Korea, my cell mates, sorry, roommates and I played much D&D. We especially dabbled in Dragonlance and Ravenloft. Who's so excited about the release of Curse of Strahd (on Fantasy Grounds) tomorrow? This guy!!

After the Army, it was hard to find groups/players. I took a nearly 20 year break. I became sick with liver disease in 2008 and had to quit my job as a professional stand-up comedian in Los Angeles and move back to my home town of Spokane, WA. Starting in 2009 I found 4E and groups/players in Spokane.

I had a successful liver transplant in August of 2014, and shortly after, during my recovery, I discovered 5E. I dove right in. Played a lot. When 5th edition came out, I freaked out. So much better than 4E and more like 1st edition AD&D which is what grabbed my heart and imagination. I was hooked. In September 2015, I discovered Fantasy Grounds. A WHOLE NEW WORLD!

I quickly immersed myself in every way I could. I became a member of these forums. I bought the Ultimate License and all the 5E material. I joined as many games as I could find. I was totally in!

Since then, I have become a "Twitcher" (twitch.tv/rob2e). I stream most all of my games. I have become a member of the online Adventurers League DM team (alonlinetools.net). I DM PotA online, and as of today I will be DMing my IRL group in LMoP using FG to run the game (Combat Tracker, Maps, etc.) while my players view the map on a connected screen and still use their paper/pencil/dice, etc. This is a thinly veiled attempt to transition them into using FG of course.

I play in some other campaigns using FG, and I also play/DM Adventurers League modules using FG.

In February 2016, I was named the WotC Adventurers League Local Coordinator for the Spokane area.

I also have (currently 6) things available at dmsguild.com.

I have created, in these forums, a Quick Character Creation tutorial (not as extensive as the Wiki version, but meant to be a super fast way to build a complete PC in FG). Also, I've made 26 1st level pregenerated characters for FG. And I have created a d100 Cirt/Fumble table module for FG.

So as you can see I am WHOLLY into the Fantasy Grounds experience.

So stand by everybody...

My experiences will be told here on this blog.

ThanX to Doug Davison for inviting me.
