First Impressions: 4 Stars, 42/50 Points
I’m really excited about this adventure and I really like how this product has been arranged in Fantasy Grounds. Simply put, there is a massive amount of content that has been expertly put together into what promises to be an exciting adventure and a great resource for expansion and/or homebrew creation.

The DM and Player versions of the Chult maps are key to using this adventure because there is simply so much content, so many images, maps and story entries that having these location-based links are key to navigating the content. It is very important that you read the entry (Story or Reference Manual) titled “Using This Module in Fantasy Grounds”, it is well written and has a lot of important information.

There are a few things though that are either inconsistent or lacking that bother me. These mainly are around not having unidentified values for the images and not all NPC’s being included in encounters when it is expected they will need to be added to the Combat Tracker.

Quality: 11/15 Points
Though I expect some minor issues to become apparent when DM’s start to use this in running campaigns, a detailed review reveals next to no errors, mistakes or omissions.

The most significant quality issues are with many of the maps. At least a dozen battlemaps (Acid…, Blood…, Rot…) are rotated so that the embedded squares are not horizontal/vertical. Which means an FG grid can not be applied and therefor token auto-scaling etc. is not possible. This is one of the key capabilities of FG and these images really should have been rotated and had an FG grid applied to them. Also, it would have been nice if the battlemaps had been provided to SmiteWorks without grids already in the images so that FG grids could have been cleanly overlaid, but the images have been scaled cleanly and an appropriate FG grid overlaid so this is not much of an issue.

Lastly, not all traps and hazards are handled consistently within the story entries. In some cases, they are included in encounters, and others they are not even though in these cases it is likely that the DM will want to add them to the Combat Tracker in order to apply their effects or actions.

Completeness: 7/10 Points
Unfortunately, there are a couple of serious issues that should be addressed; No images have unidentified names. In my view, all images should always have a set value for the unidentified name, even if it is a duplicate of the identified name or something simple like “Vista”, “Ship”, or “Scary Statue”. Something else that should be noted is that the DM battlemap versions do not have FG grids on them, so they are not encounter ready. Though since both Player versions of the battlemaps with FG grids have been provided, this is not much of a detractor, only something to be aware of.

And, even though there a relatively large number of maps (and both DM and Player versions), there are still many encounters and locations that do not have maps. Fortunately for FG users, Zacchaeus has provided a free map module with more maps for these encounters (just search the FG forums for the thread).

Creativity: 10/10 Points
As I said earlier, I really look forward to running this adventure, it promises to be unusual and fun and has a bunch of cool artwork that will help inspire everyone in the group.

As for the Fantasy Grounds module, the conversion has been well done except for what I mention elsewhere. Plus, there have been several useful additions to the FG module including the creation of NPC’s for the traps and hazards, and the first time I’ve seen this, the addition of the “You Are Here” and “The Party is Really Here” story entries and map pins. These two story entries and pins are so useful that they should be considered mandatory for all future location based adventures.

Value: 10/10 Points
I’ll say that if the FG module was being sold at the suggested retail price, the value would be questionable, but at $25 USD, this is a great deal that not only did I not hesitate to buy, I can recommend buying this module just for all of the new NPC, maps, items, and story elements.

Versatility: 4/5 Points
There is a great deal of re-usable content in this module and it also serves as a location reference for Chult (a jungle island). The number of locations, characters and related resources promise that this module can be used multiple times with vastly different play experiences with only minor adjustments or additional material being added.

First Impressions: 3 Stars, 29/50 Points
This is a fun little module that shows the potential towards becoming the ultimate gem tool for DM’s; but, it’s only about two-thirds of the way there right now. It has a large list of various gems with multiple size categories and some random gem and parcel generators. But, the documentation is basic, the generators are of limited use, and some really useful generators are absent. It’s a good start and I hope Agmar keeps on improving upon it as I would like to see it fully developed.

Quality: 12/15 Points
This module is easy to use and intuitive. Unfortunately, the single story entry which provide use directions is more like a developer’s log than a user’s guide. It provides interesting insight into Agmar’s thoughts creating the module and links to the useful tools, but isn’t organized the way a user might prefer. Everything seems to work just like intended, all the random generators, links and such are valid and give no errors (though, with hundreds of items, it’s impractical to test everyone). The other organizational complaint I have is with the group names used in the items list, “Tier 1”, “Tier 2” etc. have no explanation and without a name referencing the module (i.e. “Gems! Tier 1”) they may become confused when a GM has numerous other modules opened.
Attachment 17829

Completeness: 5/10 Points
This module has some neat tables and some random parcel generators, but as I learned more about it, I came to first question what the weighting of the various values used in the random generators (the values seem to be somewhere between 1 and 5 million), and second that as a GM I would not be able to easily predict or limit the value of a generated parcel. For example, I could generate a parcel of 1d10 gems, but anyone of those gems could end up being worth thousands or millions of gold pieces. And unless you are really familiar with the gem names and values, a cursory look at the parcel would not tell you how much treasure you are about to reward.
I would love to see parcel generators like; “1d10 gems up to 100gp value each”, “1d10 gems of 500gp value”, or maybe “1d4x100 GP in random gems”. Something where as a GM I could predict or somewhat control the value of the reward/parcel that is created.
Another missing item that is almost out of scope, but would be really nice, is a handful of images of gems. Singly and in small piles or hoards. This would help a DM not just award some gems as part of a treasure, but to share a vision of what they party now has.

Creativity: 5/10 Points
This is not the only module of gems available for Fantasy Grounds, but it does more than any of the others I’ve seen and expands upon what is available in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. There are still a great many things that can be added to this module and it just seems to scratch the surface of the creativity that might emerge.

Value: 4/10 Points
A dollar is not a lot of money, and I don’t recommend that RPG products usually are sold for less so I don’t suggest buyers should hesitate to spend one, but it’s a stretch if this is worth it. Just for what the module has today, I would have to say it’s not a good value, but for encouraging the author to keep developing and enhancing this module, then yea, spend a whole dollar. The module is useful today and hopefully will grow to what it can become in the near future.

Versatility: 3/5 Points
Right now the list of gems is very usable and can be used both during play and adventure/campaign creation. The limitations or concerns around the random parcels though limit their usage to what will probably require heavy DM scrutiny.

First Impressions: 4 Stars, 42/50 Points
This is one of those extensions that at first seems to be designed for a pretty niche group of GM’s, but as I explored it more, I began to wonder, “Hmm, I wonder if this would fit in one of my campaigns...” Do you need this? Nope. Is it useful? Yes it is, enough so it’s worth taking a look at even if you don’t think you might use it. At a minimum it will encourage you to think about alignment and how it can enhance your game. Or at least it did me.

Quality: 13/15 Points
Most aspects of this extension I find simple to use, and though not explicitly intuitive to me when I started, it quickly begins to make sense. One of the first things I wondered about and had to spend a little bit of time on was just how the “Perceived” and “Actual” alignment indicators worked. I would have liked to have seen a matrix type layout for sharing and displaying the various character alignments. It would make the interface easier to use and more intuitive. Though, give that there are more than 2 axis needed, a simple table would not be sufficient.

Completeness: 9/10 Points
Other than the matrix interface mentioned above, the extension has everything I can think of for handling character alignment. As with the other DOEs, there is an extensive documentation module that is included that should answer any usage questions if you take the time to read it.

Creativity: 9/10 Points
There are other alignment tools that have been created in the larger RPG community, but this is the only one available for use inside FG. Dulux also graphs the results in a circular/radial type graph rather than the simpler (and more common) square/box. Which, IMO, is a much better representation as the distance from the center represents a linear distance to the center (neutral). The UI and graph are clean and simple, completely functional, but not particular artistic. Something like a gradient color wheel would be cool and artistic, but wouldn’t really add to comprehension or functionality.

Perhaps my favorite part, and by far the most original, is the Alignment Quiz. This allows each character to answer a set of questions to determine just what their alignment is. How lawful are they really? How good is Good? Kudos Mr. Oz!

Value: 8/10 Points
For a free product, value isn’t about monetary cost, it’s about your time (and when applicable, other resources). This extension is worth 60 minutes of your time to download, install and see if it is something you want to continue with. Worse case you will have gained a half hour of contemplating how you can leverage alignment to enhance your play. I do wish the documentation included a Quick Start to help people learn the basics before diving into the detailed documentation.

Versatility: 3/5 Points
This extension works with many of the most popular rulesets, though there are a couple of notable exceptions. These exceptions are due to missing compatible graphics; a shortcoming that is hard to blame the author for and something that hopefully a community member will step-up and help with.

http://www.dmsguild.com/product/1883...e-Unknown-Whom

First Impressions: 3 Stars, 31/50 Points
This is a creative concept for an adventure, both in the base premise with a plot twist and with how the characters start at zero level. But it is written for someone who already knows the details of the adventure and is proficient in the assumptions and conventions that are used throughout. It really needs to be polished and the execution enhanced before it can ascend to the excellence the ideas merit.

Quality: 6/15 Points
Sentence structure is a little less than ideal at times and there are a few minor spelling errors, making reading require a bit more effort and care. But, that’s not a significant concern, however there are two major concerns that are prevalent; organization & assumptions.

The organization suffers significantly, especially in the character creation section. Because Rob presents a new means of character creation, it’s important that it is organized in an easy to use and understand method, and it’s not. Several ideas are repeated in the setup section of the adventure, and sometime without any appropriate context. A checklist and step-by-step guide would help not only a DM, but the players as well. In general I found disjointed thoughts throughout many of the longer text entries, not just during character setup.

There are also numerous assumptions throughout; things that an experienced DM will probably be able to just roll with, but leave substantial room for misunderstanding and problems running the adventure. Two examples;
First is during character creation; “Roll 4 drop 1” is given as instruction for ability generation, but something more complete such as “Roll 4d6 and drop lowest” would prevent any errors or prior knowledge.
Second is indicative of what is often found in the adventure section; the section on the Face in the Wall at the start of chapter 4 fails to give any examples of questions or conversations that would elicit the puzzle to be solved. This is just an example of something that an experienced DM will not have problems filling in, but is something that I expect to be detailed in a published adventure.

Completeness: 5/10 Points
Perhaps along the lines of the organization and assumptions deficiencies, there are a lot of areas that could provide complete FG functionality, but may not prove more than a nuisance for an experienced FG DM. For example, navigation throughout is not consistent, some story entries have links to the next entry while other do not. If you like to navigate story entries from a map or the Story list this is not an issue, but if you like to link from one entry to another, you won’t be able to. There are also numerous references to rules such as; races, backgrounds, spells and things such as drowning and are missing links pretty much everywhere. For instance;
Attachment 17421

Though it doesn’t affect DM’s or players, the full text of the OGL is missing from both the PDF and FG module as required by the OGL itself.

Creativity: 9/10 Points
The concept behind this adventure is very creative; players start at what is effectively level zero, there is a creative twist at the end (even though it may cause some issue with follow-on adventuring) and Rob has even creatively provided a solution in the event of character death. The adventure itself is pretty mundane and close to linear; which can be a boon to DMs wanting something simple to run, but despised by those who protest “railroads”.

Maps are nicely done. Not works of art, but clear, simple and more than just usable. There are things I would like to see added, especially some indication of elevation on the second level to more clearly assist with the water levels. The DM maps are oversized, they should be lower resolution versions, not just the same high resolution player maps with secrets and labels on them.

Value: 8/10 Points
At less than $2 USD, I’ve got no complaints about the value of this product. Experienced DMs shouldn’t have any problems running this adventure and will be able to use this for many hours of enjoyable game play.

Versatility: 3/5 Points
The zero level starting concepts presented in this adventure are something that can be adapted as desired to pretty much any starting campaign. Though given their disjointed presentation, DMs will have to do some work to clean them up for re-using elsewhere and will need to make some adaptations for other story lines.
The maps are generic enough they can be used elsewhere, but the modified NPCs aren’t interesting enough to bother with. The other contents probably won’t see much re-use.

Comments on the PDF
Not all of the artwork made available in the PDF is made available in the FG module which is disappointing. The layout of the PDF is attractive and easy to read. Finally, the PDF does not include player versions of the maps, so a DM would need another tool (dry erase map, etc) to facilitate play.

http://www.dmsguild.com/product/1976...-Rarity-Tables

First Impressions: 4 Stars, 40/50 Points
I really like what Rob has done with these tables. He has sliced and diced the magic item tables from the DMG (and the SRD) all sorts of ways to make it easy for a DM to find or randomly generate magic items. There are a few minor flaws here and there, but nothing that hinders the useful of this module. The key to using this module is to read the Instructions provided in the Story list. Once you do that, all of the various tables and templates will make sense.

Quality: 12/15 Points
In products like this there is no feasible way to test every link and the results of every table, but after the numerous tests I made, every link worked and every table or template generated reasonable results. I did find that some of the templates don’t generate perfectly formed grammar and occasionally the layout is inconsistent (i.e. when a magic shop is sold out of multiple items), but nothing that deters usability of the results. I also did find a few spelling errors (i.e. “Magic Botique”), but again, nothing critical. Perhaps the biggest shortcoming is that the various table groups are simply named (rings, rods, scrolls, etc) and therefore they won’t sort together and may easily get confused with tables from other modules.

For example;
Attachment 17237

Completeness: 8/10 Points
This module has a glut of tables that group magic items up into all types of useful sets. I haven’t been able to think of any other way that I could benefit from the items being presented. The one aspect (as discussed below) is that the Magic Shop creation templates are not as complete as they could be.

Creativity: 7/10 Points
Magic shop creation templates are the height of creativity in this module. And, they are pretty cool, but just seem to be the beginning of what they could become. They could include things like; descriptions of the location and owner, or a remarkable feature of the shop such as an animated statue, pet, or trinket.

Value: 6/10 Points
So, is this module worth a $1.95USD? If you want to have a better way to access (through lists or random table generation) the magic items in the DMG or SRD, then yes. If you are looking for a cool creative magic shop generator, then probably not yet.

Versatility: 2/5 Points
The tables that are used to generate the Magic Shops and such for the templates are really pretty limited and are just a start as to what they could be. For instance, there are only 5 first and last names for the shop owners. A cool idea, but given the online name generators available, a list of 20 or 30 each would be simple to do. I’m also a bit disappointed that in the larger towns, only a single shop is created to host all of the items available for the entire community. I would think that once you got to a large town or a small city that there would start to be a chance for more than one shop per community.

DOE Base Extension v2.2 by Dulux-Oz
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums...Base-Extension

First Impressions: 5 Stars, 47/50 Points
For users, this extension isn’t very interesting and by itself is minimally useful. But, for every user that wants to do more with FG and leverage the wonderfully powerful DOE extensions like Sound (my favorite), this is simple a required must have. It is executed and supported nearly flawlessly and I consider it to be akin to an official add-on (though it’s not).

Quality: 15/15 Points
This extension is simple. There isn’t much to do with it so usability is not an issue. Reliability is high, I haven’t found any compatibility issues with it. Even more importantly, Dulux has an impressive track record of helping to troubleshoot and quickly resolve any issues that do crop up. So, even though I’m pretty loathe to give any product a perfect score on quality, I can’t justify anything other than a perfect 15 for this.

Completeness: 9/10 Points
This product does everything it says it will do, and probably more. It is well documented. The only thing I can say is that if you don’t know what the Entry Box to the ColourGizmo is referring to, you probably will never stumble upon it and the instructions don’t tell you where it is. It’s under the Color icon in the top right corner of FG and the Entry Box can be seen in this image;
Attachment 17212

Creativity: 8/10 Points
Because much of what this extension does is behind the scenes as code, and even if the code was the most creative and brilliant code ever to be written, a user really doesn’t (and shouldn’t) care about that. So, looking at the two aspects of creativity this extension does for a user, enabling the other DOE extensions, and the Entry Box to the ColourGizmo. Enabling the other DOE extensions is cool stuff. And those are pretty awesome and creative. The Entry Box, not so much. It’s functional, it does its job, it’s just not very creative.

Value: 10/10 Points
It’s hard to beat free when it comes to price. And given that this extension is valuable as the base to allow the other DOE extensions, it has an exceptional price to value ratio.

Versatility: 5/5 Points
This part is really hard to evaluate. Because, on its own, this extension doesn’t do much (one simple thing), but it enables all of the other DOE extensions that do so much. But, because this extension enables so much more with all the other DOE extensions, then I’m going to say this extension is as versatile as they come.

http://www.dmsguild.com/product/1907...Monster-Tables

First Impressions: 4 Stars, 39/50 Points
A set of high quality random monster tables that depending upon your approach may not initially be intuitive, but is easy to use once you do.
Note, this module works with the SRD Bestiary, MM, Volo’s, and Tomb of Beasts. Since I do not own Tomb of Beasts, this review excludes any considerations for functionality related to that reference.

Quality: 14/15 Points
Because of the extensive number of tables and links, I haven’t been able to verify that every table works as expected and every link is valid. But in testing more than a dozen tables and hundreds of links, I have found no errors or issues. Rob has designed this so that the tables can be shared with the players (to allow players to make their own rolls). While I don’t foresee me sharing a random monster table with my players, I do appreciate a different style of play. The problem with this, is that means that the tables appear empty, and therefore confusing. So, at first look, the tables appear empty and broken. Which they aren’t, but it gives initial adoption a pause.

The apparently (but not actually) blank tables:

Completeness: 9/10 Points
Rob has done a great job of making this easy to use and has put together some simple instructions for its use. The one thing I feel he has missed is if the table list is opened from the Library, and not from the campaign Tables list/icon, the tables are unlabeled and therefore confusing. I will also mention that not all possible combinations of reference sources have been accounted for (though the likely variations have).

Here's what it looks like if opened from the Library:
Attachment 17207

Creativity: 7/10 Points
Well, since this is really just a random table generator using existing sources, I can say it’s too creative. But, it is well done and the tables have been put together with the most reasonable selection of reference sources. I.e. The table that includes Volo’s also includes the Monster Manual reference, which makes sense, because if you have a Volo’s, odds are you have the MM as well.

Value: 6/10 Points
I’m pretty sure I bought this when it was $1USD, though now it’s on sale for $.50. I’m also sure Rob spent many hours putting this together. I’m just not sure how useful this is, and therefore what the value of it is. Why I question the useful is because with FG I can already sort the NPC list by CR and source, so this just adds the ability to randomly select from that table/list (though it adds the ability for selected multiple sources).

Versatility: 3/5 Points
As mentioned before, there are a couple of possible combinations that could have been accounted for (i.e. SRD and Volo’s, ToBs only, etc), but are probably only useful in a minority of cases. Also, these tables only select a single NPC of selected challenge rating, additional functionality such as encounter building (note, this product does not claim to have such capabilities) would make this product immensely more versatile.

First Impressions: 2 Stars, 25/50 Points
Well, who can complain about free maps? I guess I can. Though I like these maps and have no problem using them in my games, they could be so much better. They are all certainly usable, but none of them are artistically inspired, nor have they actually been optimized for VTT use.

Quality: 5/15 points
When it comes to VTT maps, image quality isn’t everything. File size and resolution is actually more important. Most of these maps are relative large in file size (up to 28.7 MB) which certainly is nowhere near the recommended 1MB limit. Given that none of them have scale markers or grid alignment squares, it’s hard to know if the resolution of the maps is appropriate, but I think so. But all of them are also pixelated, which isn’t a problem in a VTT battle map, but given their large file size, certainly isn’t justified.

Completeness: 2/10 points
As mentioned, none of these have grid alignment or scales on them. Even if the GM is free to scale them as desired, a scale should always be included to inform them as to the expected size (and therefore quality). And a grid alignment square should always be there. They are simple to add, and oh so helpful for a GM. Also, some of these files are not named usefully, and this is a shame, because when I go through my maps folder in a few months, how am I going to find that neat map with the nearly buried face of the stone giant/statue? Finally, since FG is the only VTT currently supported on the DMsGuild, these should be packaged up into a module so that they can be labelled and easily used in FG anytime they are needed.

Creativity: 4/10 points
Most of these are just standard encounter locations, nothing very original or creative; which is fine. The one I really do think is creative (the stone giant face) is the one titled 8774472827_e32be84e59_o_(1).jpg and I’m tempted to make an encounter just so I can use this map. All the others are ones that will sit in my map library until I need some map on the spur of the moment and hope to find something useful or close enough.

Value: 10/10 points
Sure, these are free and they are good enough to add to your collection. So, they are worth the time to download them and to keep them around in case you need one someday.

Versatility: 4/5 points
These are mostly so generic and simple that they can be used in tons of different themed games. Most are not limited to a single setting like fantasy, medieval or modern (though a few are) and are quite versatile.

Inspired by various discussion and complaints of the lack of reviews and feedback for prospective buyers and authors, I have decided to step in and...

Inspired by various discussion and complaints of the lack of reviews and feedback for prospective buyers and authors, I have decided to step in and provide critical reviews of RPG products that have Fantasy Grounds modules. My goal is to provide concise, critical, and constructive reviews of products created for Fantasy Grounds so that a) prospective buyers will be able to make informed decisions before buying a product, and b) so that authors can receive useful feedback to help improve their current and future products.

In short, I’m tired of hearing the same complaints from both gamers and authors and have decided to make a contribution to the gaming community. I also want to recognize those that have helped me with reviews of my products, so this is a way to pay it forward.

I will review the following types of content

The content must already be published via either; the DMsGuild (www.dmsguild.com), the Fantasy Grounds webstore (www.fantasygrounds.com/store), or another recognized website.

The content must include a Fantasy Grounds Module or Extension, and it is this module/extension that I will be reviewing. See below for review of PDF versions of content.

I must be provided a complimentary review copy of the content via email to my gmail.com account LordEntrails. Preferably through the website distribution system (i.e. the DMsGuild has this functionality for authors and is the only way I can provide a rating or review on the DMsG site).

Review Ratings
I will be using a 50 point system that will correspond to star ratings as follows;
46+ points = 5 stars
36-45 points = 4 stars
26-35 points = 3 stars
16-25 points = 2 stars
<15 points = 1 star

Review Criteria

Quality (15 points) – From spelling and grammar to images and artistry, how usable and readable is this product?

Completeness (10 points) – Does it have everything I need to use it?

Creativity (10 points) – Is it original and creative?

Value (10 points) – Is the product worth the price?

Versatility (5 points) – How broadly can this product be used?

What I will not be evaluating, and what I will not be doing

Playtesting, this simply is too time consuming

Making detailed power or balance evaluations. If something seems out of balance or ill-suited, I will say so. But I don’t intend to worry about min/max implications.

What my rating mean to me
In today’s world, many consider anything less than a perfect rating a bad review. I don’t. Here’s how I see things;

5 stars: Awesome, I would consider buying this just to have it for inspiration or to support the incredible work done. (Honestly, I don’t expect many of these to come up).

4 stars: Great Work, if you have a need for this, then you will want this and will love it. It’s solid, well thought out, well executed and meets all my expectations of an experience professional product.

3 stars: Good job, it is very useable as is. It is well done and has solid concepts and execution. There is room for improvement, but this is a respectable product that most gamers will be happy using or will enjoy plundering for ideas or artistry.

2 stars: I see potential, and there are some ideas or artistry here that is valuable, but the product needs serious revisions before it reaches a professional level product.

1 star: Uninteresting and poorly executed. I don’t expect gamers to be happy with this product and an author really needs to step back and do a significant amount of reconsideration, study and review of similar products to learn what they should be looking to produce.

Other product format considerations
If the product is also made available to me in other formats I can access (such as PDF), I will perform a limited review of it and will comment on it in the review. But, the FG module versions is what will be rated and is the basis for the review.

Where I will post your review

On the blog at the Fantasy Grounds site (http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/blog.php)

If it is a published DMsGuild product, on the DMsG product page for your product (Note, for ratings of less than 3 stars, I will wait 10 days in case the author has a legitimate concern or makes revisions in this time period.)

If you request, on ENWorld in the DMsGuild sub-forum (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forumdi...Master-s-Guild)

If you request, on ENWorld product reviews (http://www.enworld.org/forum/productforums.php)

If you request, I will consider posting to other locations

Updating a Review
When requested, because of major updates to a product, I will re-review a product and update the review(s) for it. I will only do this once per product and only when requested by the author.

About Me
I was born in 1970 and began playing Dungeons in Dragons in second grade (circa 1978). Since then I have played dozens of systems of RPG’s and numerous related board and card games. Note, I do not claim to be an expert on any of them. I am a Big Picture thinker, an engineer, and I look at things critically with a systematic view.

Considerations
I will do my best to provide all reviews in an unbiased manner as I can. If I have any professional or personal relationships with any of the authors or products I review (other than as a possible or previous customer of them) I intend to make full disclosure of this in the review. I will also be as timely as I can with reviews. I expect to be posting reviews most weeks, but will not commit to a release schedule as I have other priorities and projects.
