If we generate a server alias will this correctly pick up the external ip address of the router. At present the server is showing the internal/local ip address?

why does the server not use UPnP to configure the router port forwarding?

Because not everyone uses a UPnP-configurable firewall. Also, the box with your IP says "Your local network IP address" to help you in configuring your firewall, not to report what IP address is registered with the server. So to answer your question, yes, it will correctly pick up your internet-facing IP.
