View Full Version : Tokens - Character PC and NPC Sizes

I have a question for pros here. Last night I was running my first game of FG, and ran into a token issue. My NPC tokens were much larger than my PC tokens. I was able to unlock the token size and rescale everything, but would end up with either the PC tokens being the right size, or the NPC tokens being the right size, but not both. When I sized the NPC tokens correctly the PC tokens were tiny tiny tiny.
What am I doing wrong?

You should try to pick one size scheme for your tokens and stick to it. If you have medium tokens that are 50x50 , 128x128 and 32x32 you're are not going to be able to scale anything.
Personally I have started using 32 pxl per 5ft maps and medium tokens that are 128x128. This way the maps don't get too huge and the tokens keeps their clarity when I downscale them.
Pick something that works for you and go with it though.

I read somewhere that if I put the tokens onto the tracker first and then drag them to the map, I can rescale once and have all the tokens correct together. Is that true?

If you move the mouse over the token displayed in the combat tracker, some rulesets will allow you to change it's scale by using the mousewheel.

Tbh it's a lot of fannying around if you have a large combat with lots of mis-matched tokens, when you can just sort it at a token level, but yes it shows the multiplier as you mouse-scroll the image.
It is handy for creatures that enlarge themselves though.

I agree with Sorontar on this. If you really like the token set you've accumulated, load them up in a graphics editor (not Paint - you'll need something like Photoshop or The GIMP) and resize them to be roughly the same dimensions. You'll only have to do this once per token instead of finagling with them in the tracker every time you add a new creature to the map.
For example, I use a scale of 50 pixels for a medium-sized (1x1 square) creature, so large (2x2 square) creatures would be 100x100 pixels, etc.
The tokens I use are just square portraits of the creatures, but if you're using tokens with a lot of transparencies (the realistic tokens a lot of people like to use), you can just eyeball it, or maybe someone else here has advice on scaling those tokens appropriately.

Personally I use 32 pixels for mediums and 64 pixels for large. The FG default player tokens are at 30 pixels. You do want to get all your tokens at the same scale (what ever you use) because it will save you a lot of hassle having to always set the scales in the combat tracker.
A free utility that will do batch resizing of images is IrfanView. Unfortunately IrfanView does not handle transparency so if your tokens have transparent areas you won't be able to use it.

If you have photoshop, there is a great free action I just found last week over at https://www.digitaladventures.net/downloads.htm
Scroll down near the bottom of the page to find it. If you know how to select a square box, and crop the area you want, the action will do the rest, and give you standard Small, Medium, Large-sized tokens.
I love it, because when I'd make the tokens myself on the fly I ended up with varying standards so I'd end up trying the trick of lockingthe token scale on the map, resizing the map and then releasing the token scale. And that was just hassle...
