Newbie in this looking at the system before buying

I would like to know if I can create my own rules for AD&D 2nd edition, as I am not into the 3rd or 4th edition rules. 2nd edition is my favorite system to play in.

I would like to add a 2nd ed. character sheet and then add some of my own rules.

I have been reading up on the site and how it says to change some of the xml to use for adding house rules, I might be able to do some things but I am no computer hacker or programmer.

Before I invest the money I just want to be sure it will be something a computer novice can do??

Hello Art,

Creating rulesets is not something I would advise for a computer novice. I do not think it is something you could easily do.

That said, I run a 2nd edition game for my wife and a couple of friends using the D20 interface provided with the game and it works just fine. None of the "rules" are handled by the interface, it's all in how you interpret dierolls. I show them maps, we chat about what they are doing and they roll the dice, whereby I as DM decide whether a high roll or a low roll is what they need, based on the rules we use.

Sure, the character sheet provided has no room for exceptional strength or Thac0, but we just keep a paper character sheet handy for that (and abuse the feat screen for saving throws, stuff like that). All in all it is very workable and has already provided lots of fun in what would otherwise have been dreary nights :)

Like Zabulus said, FG really just simulates the table people play around in a face to face game. If having a "proper" character sheet is important to you you might look into Castles & Crusades which is basically AD&D updated to get rid of THAC0 and exceptional strength. There is a ruleset for C&C sold by Digital Adventures.

In all honesty, its not going to be the character sheet that is a problem - it is going to be finding people to play with. There are a lot less people playing AD&D than 3.x and 4.

Yes, I know that it is very hard to find anyone willing to play, I even been trying to start a 2nd edition game face to face and since that has not worked. I thought something like this where people have a chance to play by computer and still have it like being around a table top actually running the game with a group. I do the play by posts, but that still is a far cry from being around a table with real people..

I guess what I am trying to do is purchase a VTT type of game that will allow me to play AD&D but with me being to add some rules for my own game so I can then try to get some people to meet 2-4 times a month over the internet at a specific time kinda of like old table top gaming..
