New to FG2

Im new to FG2. I'm using the 4E ruleset. When I create a character in local mode, how do I access it in hosting mode? It is not listed when I click on characters in hosting mode. Also, I couldn't figure out how to assign a portrait to the character in local mode.
I tried to follow all the directions in the User's guide but apparently something isn't working right or is missing.
