I have downloaded and bought the full version. Can my players who are using the lite version use a custom ruleset?
I ask because I read in a couple places people unsure if this could be, and some even suggested it couldn't... and before I have people spend a ton of money I'd like to know. :rv:

Yes, if you host a game using a custom ruleset, when they connect they will download an encrypted pak of the ruleset. They will not have the actual ruleset, but they can play in any ruleset the host uses.
If any file in the ruleset changes, or you rename the campaign folder, they will have to redownload the ruleset the next time they connect.
Depending on how many people are pulling the ruleset from you at once, it can take a little while, so if you change your ruleset, be sure to open the server early or the day before so they can update the ruleset without infringing on game time.
I am using the JPG_4E ruleset for 4th edition, and the ruleset gets updates every week or so right now. So I leave the server up all day the day before the game so the players can get up to date.

Thanks! I'm using the JPG_4E ruleset as well. I appreciate the tips.

One thing you can't do with some rulesets (including 4E_JPG) is use them in Local mode. Some rulesets support this option as it lets you make characters offline. To support this you need to make some sort of special Pak file.
A lot of people seem to get stuck on this fact when they first start using 4E_JPG

What do you mean? What's the difference?
I was messing around with it tongiht and made some characters. Of course... I'm also using the full version if that matters...
Does that mean that they have to be connected to me, the host, before they can start making a character?

When you launch the full version of FG2 you're presented with 3 choices:
Host Game as a Gamemaster
Join Game as a Player
Create and View Local characters.
The last choice will not work for 4E_JPG.
So to create/edit a character someone with a full version and the ruleset must Host the game.

Ah ok well that's no problem. I'm the host, and I have the full version.
So then... and i know these are obnoxious newbie questions and my apologies, would I be launching and letting them connect to me and then they go about creating their character? I suppose they'd have to as they wouldn't have the ruleset...

Yes that's normally the way it works.

And you don't need to apologize for questions here--we all know the documentation isn't the most you could ask for, but the community more than makes up for it!

I more than appreciate it. Fantasy Grounds is a great tool. And as a software developer myself I'm more than happy to help work on some mods.
