View Full Version : After 5.1.11 update, can't move FG windows

Everything was working perfectly tonight, I think on version 5.0.19 (not 100% sure).
Then I ran the update and now all my FG windows are locked in place and can't be moved or resized.
The buttons on the windows still work and I can scroll, but I cannot pan images with middle mouse.
I can't roll dice either, they get picked up and then immediately drop.
I'm running Linux:
╰─➤ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Release: 22.04
Codename: jammy
╰─➤ uname -a
Linux RedJelly 6.8.0-124-generic #124~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue May 26 21:05:19 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The Steam/Unity version, under Proton 9.0-4.
╰─➤ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
wayland
I may have to cancel our game tomorrow and we've waited a month for schedules to align - I'm honestly heartbroken!

Things I have tried:
- I've tried both Wayland and X11
- Proton 9.0-4 and 8.0-5.
- Disabled Steam Input
- Tried a different mouse
- Restarted computer
xinput shows press, motion, release.

FG has a native Linux client, so you shouldn't need Proton - if it's definitely using Proton then you've somehow ended up with the Windows client and you might be better off uninstalling and reinstalling (either via Steam or from FG's website).
If it is using the Linux native client, have you tried running FG outside of the Steam client? When you load it via Steam, Steam loads its own set of Linux libraries and they have been known to cause issues in the past. However, if you just go to the folder that FG has been installed in using your Terminal or File Browser, you can run the FG executable manually and it'll use the proper libraries then.
If you're not sure where you app directory is, click your username in the top right of the Launcher and select "Advanced" from the menu, it's shown at the top of the dialog window that appears.

I'm giving up at this point, after 2 hours of trying everything I can think of. This must be a regression.
I dare not switch to an older build with all the warnings about data corruption but I'd be very glad if the Smiteworks folks could give us a way to manage versions so that we can keep a data directory per version if we like, and then pick the version on the clients and the server. This way FG regressions don't necessarily mean game cancellations.
Though I'll note that this evening started with another issue: the FG updater on other Linux computer in the house crashed when trying to update. Last month it ran fine, now it doesn't. I reinstalled completely and now I can't even get to the menu because the updater runs after install, and crashes (little unity exclamation mark). That computer is also running Proton 9.0-4, and was working perfectly in the last game.
So even if we got to pick our versions, that computer would still be bricked.

Thanks, I'll try the native version. I've been running it under Steam/Proton for years.

Also,
Thanks, I tried the native client and that worked! Windows can be moved and resized.
I guess I will need to run FG outside of Steam for the time being.

You never need to run FG with Steam except if using Proton, which is no longer needed with FGVTT since the switch to Unity. But if you install FG via Steam it should automatically pick the right client version - Windows, Linux, Mac? If not then that should be rectified.

Maybe my version was running under Proton because that was the only option back when I installed it, and I never noticed there was a native version. I'm not sure. But now that I know about it, and that I can run it outside of Steam, I think I'll just do that. The simpler the better!
I still think a version manager would be ideal though - I spent many many hours tying to fix the issue and if I could have rolled back it would have been a 10 second fix. Then I could go on with my campaign prep instead of debugging until 1am and eventually having to move my whole setup.

We had this issue last night as well... I have one player running Linux, but we couldn't determine if it was related... I started turning off extensions and it stabilized for us bu I've been talking with the creator and he claims the extension we removed doesn't affect windows in anyway so not sure how it would be related...
We also had the campaign not loading for players issue as well.

I turned off all extensions and that didn't fix it for me. Interesting that the problem somehow disappeared for you.
With "campaign not loading", are you referring to the issue where the updater crashes? The only other "campaign not loading" I've seen is where the client and server versions are different - in that case the client just sits there loading forever. Which is very odd to me because surely an initial handshake could check version numbers and show an error message?

More that my players were stalled out when trying to connect to the campaign or the campaign did not show as available despite my GM "server" being up.
While troubleshooting I would shutdown and restart the GM server in order to remove extensions one by one.
