View Full Version : Confused about the solo version; Wasteland Wanderer

I'm happy to accept that I'm just a pringle, but I can't for the life of me figure out to how make a character record where it uses the solo rules, it always wants to use the base ruleset for character creation, Am I really just supposed to make an image file out of all the pipboy tabs in the book and edit it that way and get zero automation for my character? If that is the case then I guess it what it is, already spent so much money it and the base rules I had to purchase. If I'd known I was gonna just be editing image files for my character sheet, I would've just bought the real book and did it all with notepad++. I could also just be overstimulated and missing a button somewhere. Thanks to anyone who has answers. Also sorry if this is the wrong place for it, I didn't see a forum just for the solo version, only for the base version.

I dont have it yet, I will buy it approx 2 weeks later.
But that's what ails other solo resources in other settings I guess. You either need the official ruleset instead of free version for the links to work or the solo modules refer to resources like Players Handbook equivelant of a setting.
But before deciding, the rule of thumb with FGU is that, there's always an easy solution but it is mostly burried under somewhere like wiki.
I know it'll be too little too late but I will be able to answer this 2 weeks later when I have it, if no one has yet.
EDIT for DEVS: Also I'd like to know for free users to add a note to the lists I write. Is this and Star Trek Solo compatible with quick start rules only?

You are probably right, I'm sure I am missing something and when it gets pointed out I'll be feeling a little silly and that's okay. Either way refunds can be requested up to 30 days post purchase, so it's not like it'll be going anywhere in two weeks. I'm happy to wait for someone who has more experience with solo modules to help out. and if I do have to wait two weeks, I appreciate any information you end up being able to provide.

Np :)
Wait, let me get it right: It'll be going blind but
For creating your character, do you use the RIGHT SIDEBAR > PLAYER > Characters > (+) button or character wizard if any?
Then what happens?
Glass Violet
May 27th, 2026, 11:23
It lets me make a character but using the base game rules, so the wrong number of attributes, skills, You can pick one of six origins when wasteland wanderer only has the one. and from there that character sheet only has tabs useful for the default game. No vault tab, etc.

I could probably rig it all to end up sort of working, but it feels very much like the wrong way.

I guess I know what's happening:
Are these two modules enabled? Quickstart and Machine Frequency.
67615
If so, open SIDEBAR > LIBRARY > Modules
Deactivate quickstart if you have the main ruleset, and load Solo Rules module from the Activation button.
Then it should see the content.
Glass Violet
May 27th, 2026, 11:34
The only two modules I have activated are the solo rules[Wasteland Wanderer] and the core rules[Fallout 2d20]. It could be I'm just supposed to force whatever numbers don't line up with the character creator and my brain is just overstimulated and overcooked. I think I also just expected some kind of interface for the map and npc "tabs" as the book calls them and I'm not getting that, which is fully frying my adhd brain.
[Edit] I truly think I, personally, am overthinking everything and making it harder as a result.

I just checked the pdf and saw the other tabs such as Vault Tab, but couldnt find them in the char sheet either.
Checked the Forge too, there's no extensions that add those tabs.
I guess either those are not implemented, or they are played in other ways, it is hard to say without having the modules.
But you definitely dont have to edit images for anything except maps -especially for main parts of the game.
Also, from one ADHDM to you: when the overstimulation hits, it is best to stop everything and wait for calming down. :) If only you see the errors I made when Im in full nitro mode :D

That would be the best. Whenever I force like that, it always go into a wreck. But when I calm down with music or resting, later on I see things clearly.
Good luck and hope you get well soon!
EDIT: Since I'll have the module soon I'll keep checking because I already noted this exact question in my lists [Tavern in this forums]
FYI, superteddy made the module, and if anyone else knows it would be Laerun, Gwydion, and Marmus.

Hmm. New findings:
+ Vault Tab is not needed in FGU because it is just tables which should be accessed in SIDEBAR > Campaign > Tables tab. Maybe that's why it is not added.
+ In Character Sheet > Abilities tab, you can drag and drop Allies and in the Sheet > Notes Tab, you can drag and drop Factions.
+ EDIT: So, if more than one module is opened, origins, items, etc., from all of them are shown. So you just use the ones you like.
+ You can enter any number [within the rules] to box in the right of SPECIAL attributes.
+ Vault and extra tabs are also not in the SIDEBAR> Tools> Party Sheet.
+ But you can find Salvage tab under the Party Sheet.
+ More to add if I find something else...

This is all very helpful, even now having a bit to sit and reset, I think I personally entered with the wrong set of expectations, and didn't do enough research. So when reality was too different from those expectations, it overloaded me and the process was doomed from there. I bet when I get back into tomorrow I'll sort out what I need to do to make it work happily for me and have a good time. Besides the fact that with the default theme I can't see the names of anything in the inventory unless it's unidentified. The words just don't display on the identified items. But that's something for the bug reports.

Glad you sorted it out. Most of us jump into games without knowing anything and figure out from there, and if we have a question, people are more than happy to help here.
Btw, I cant see the item names in Theme: Core either.
But I dont have any so I created a custom one to test it.
It seems like a bug.
EDIT: Also, idk if its just me [win11] but Printscreen key doesnt work in FGU either.

I'm not the developer of the module. I am the developer that built and maintains the Fallout ruleset. I'm not privy to what is supposed to be done with that module other than the changes the developer requested with NPCs. I'll pass this along to the developer and see if they can help answer questions.

Sorry about that, I misremembered the developer of the module as oppose to the ruleset.
Thanks for passing it along.

Hey everyone. I am the developer for the module and I will try to answer your questions here. A quick overview, the module was developed to fit into the existing core rules records and structure as much as possible, this is why you may not see some things you expect at first.
Lets just go through character creation first. Since Wasteland Wanderer is compatible with the core rules, you will see elements from the core ruleset all through the character creation. Think of Wasteland Wanderer as a new module that adds to the core rule set rather than a standalone item, at least when using it here in Fantasy Grounds.
For the Vault, I recommend one of three ways, you can use the Notes tab on the character sheet, or use a new "Locations" or "Player Notes" record. The actual information about the vault is very limited, so when developing this one, I saw it as a simple thing to add to the character sheet notes tab, if it ever got bigger, I would use a Player Note.
You will use the normal character creation process, I am unsure what update changed it, but when you get to your special, your at zero across the board, bring them all up to 5, then you will have 5 more points to spend as you wish, or of course reduce any of the starting ones below 5 to increase others more. All of your other stats are the same as a standard 2d20 character.
You can use any backgrounds you like from the solo or any other module you have.
NPCs: for solo NPCs there is a new button on the standard NPC window. This will open another window and list all of the solo NPCs and their records are displayed with the new record layout. You still have access to the regular NPCs as you can adapt them for solo play if you wish.
I think this covers most of the questions and will get you on the right track. I will be watching this thread now if there are any other questions.
I will also work on an update to put some of this information into the module in the developer notes section where you will find some other useful information on using the solo rules in Fantasy Grounds.

This is incredibly helpful and appreciated. I ended up coming to these conclusions when I sat back down with it now before coming here to say anything and am happy. As previously stated I think I just overloaded myself, became confused and frustrated, and didn't realize that's what was happening until the very friendly Tempered7 helped me figure that part out.

I've also come here to ask this. I find it hard to believe that they expect us to edit images. Is there something we are missing? I'm trying to make my character but like OP I'm getting base game rules instead of the solo sheet rules. So far this is really disappointing. I also bought the module through steam so I don't think I have the option to ask for a refund either. This kind of sucks, not going to lie.

Ok, so in the solo rules under special it says attributes start a 4. Is that a typo? I'm very confused. The problem I ran into was that my HP is shown as 11 when according to the rules it should be END+5 and my endurance is 4 so I should have 9 HP but the character sheet won't let me change it to 9. I own other suppliments and the full game but I thought the solor rules would be a fun to play by myself.

You won't need to "edit" the images outside of adding tokens or drawing layers as you generate your world.
For example, to create your map, you can open the Assets window, go into the "Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer - A Solo Roleplaying Game" folder, proceed into the Art folder, and then look for the file called C7_72_Map_Tab. Click on that image, it will open it in a new window, you will have buttons there to create a map record using that image. You can use any tokens you have, or import your own tokens to place on the new map record to indicate quest locations, you can also use the built in tools to draw on the map to create terrain as you see fit.
For character creation, please see my previous post in this thread. A quick overview is that aside from the vault generation, the rest of character creation is the same as the core rules, but, because the solo game is compatible with the 2d20 core rules, you have a lot more available to you than just the solo items.
If you have anything specific that is not covered here, please let me know.

Hey, I think that must be a typo on the solo rules. When I do the math for the starting SPECIALS they recommend, it starts with everything at 5. I will double check this in the original PDF as well, but I highly recommend going with the starting 5 in each. All the end math works out to that.

Ok, so just use the Core character rules and not Solo. What rules should I be using from the solo game? I'm still reading through it as I make my character. Just as a not I've not played the core game before so I suppose that might be why I am having so much confusion.
EDIT: Ok saw you reply. Thanks so much. That makes a lot more sense. Also thank you for answering my post so quickly :) I love fallout and I'm excited to have an adventure in the wasteland.

It is not a typo, it is missing the next step. In standard play, you start at 5 each special, and get 5 more points to spend. In solo, you start at 4 and get 12 more points to spend. This comes to the same total.

Ok I see. Maybe I messed up something during character creation. Not sure why it says 11 HP when I should have 9. I chose the focused stat spread instead of assigning my own.

Yeah, if you have not played the core, it can be very confusing to see the difference. Realisticly the solo shares a tone with the core. The main difference comes in generating the world (map locations, NPCs, Quests, ETC) with random tables, and then combat is the biggest difference. You will not roll damage, just attacks, and then look at the gear you have and find out how much damage it applies. Also, a quirck of the solo rules, NPCs have their initiative and their hp as the same number, when one goes down, they both go down. In the combat tracker they are both tracked by the init column, there is a note about this in the book on the page called Adaptoin Notes. Under the Contents Sub chapter.

Ok, there is one small difference in the HP total that I am unsure how we will fix. Core Rules HP is END + LCK, while solo is 5 + END.
I will explore options on this.
Edit: For a quick fix, you can go into the character sheet, combat tab, click on Damage Resistance button to access the editor, left column, there is a HP Mod box. You can put a negative value in there. This will let you choose to use core rules or solo rules for HP calculation.

Absolutely. Happy to help where I can. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I plan to make an update to the module next week to try and fix a few things/add instructions on how to use the solo rules with the core system, so be on the look out for that. Also, no promises on any changes that require scripting, that will be up to the developer for the core system since new mechanics get added in directly. I will reach out to them though to see if there is anything that can be done.

It's understandable. I'm just really happy that FG finally got a solo supplement. Like the Forge has Mythic 2nd Edition for purchase and that is what I normally use, but it's really nice to have a game's official Solo supplement available to purchase. I hope there are more solo supplements in the fute for other games or even whole solo rulesets implemented. I'm a big fan of Solo gaming.

I just let Superteddy know in the Discord. Tag skills also work differently in Solo than they do in Core. In Core a tag skill boosts the chosen skill by 2 points while in Solo it just changes the range at which you score a critical success. It's easy enough to adjust for and SuperTeddy says they are a bit swamped at the moment wit a new rulesetand it will take a little more work than the HP fix. But they asked me to let you know. Probably just needs a developer note added to the module to let players know to just adjust it themselves. Hopefully that's helpful :)

I took some time with it during a brief break and the ruleset already adds the focus for tag skills. The only place that adjusts the skill rank by 2 is in the character creator. I pushed an update to adjust this behavior based on the option being set. Let me know if I may have missed it somewhere else.
