Could you create an Effect with:
DMGR: resist
or
DMGWARD: resist
Set it to expend on next round?

It would be "RESIST: <damagetype>" for the effect.

DMGR: x works by reducing incoming damage by x before any resistances come into play and DMGWARD: x reduces damage by x after resistances are worked out. So neither would apply to this case since they reduce damage by a specific number - which you don't know until the dice are rolled.
The effect you want is RESIST: all set the targeting to self and the expend to on next roll and apply it before damage is taken.
I know the effect should last until the end of the turn but there's no guarantee that the next damage the character takes is going to be the same type of damage that caused the reaction in the first place. So you'd just need to apply the effect again should they take the same damage again before the time runs out.
