How to add spell slots or charges to an item?

My character has a ring of spell storing and I would like to be able to track how many times I've used it.

I had a player set up an action group for the ring, ie "A Ring of Storing - 5 slots" then inside the group he would drag and drop in the spells in the ring and then just check the spell off when used.

A more minimalist way might be to just add a single item with the amount of total spell slots as uses and then in the name of the item just list the spells in the ring, ie Feather Fall, Fireball, Rope Trick and then when you cast the spell check off the number of slots and put an X after the spell name.

If you change your spells in the ring a lot the first version is probably better while if you always put the same spells in the the simpler version might be better.
