View Full Version : Mask Problem - Revealing All Outside Edges of Masked Map Reveals the Inside

I've been using Mask to keep the areas of an island (Chult from Tomb of Annihilation) players haven't visited yet hidden. This has been working great for the past 3 years. Something about masking must have changed recently because the mask was missing when I opened the map tonight. I tried remaking the mask, but it didn't work for a very strange reason. If a Global Mask is added to the map, it works as intended. Revealing portions of the map works as intended UNTIL all the outside edges of the map are revealed (necessary because the players are supposed to be able to see the edges of the island), at which point the inside area is revealed as well. A blue outline still shows where the mask should be (even though it's not there).
Some pictures to illustrate:

I created a test map using the same image asset. Things appear to be working as intended as I reveal the outside edges of the map. The masked portion is greyed out as expected.

I'm about to reveal the last masked portion of the outside edges of the map.

I reveal the last portion of the outside edges of the map and it reveals the interior portion that I want to keep masked. There's a blue outline where the mask should be. (This blue outline isn't visible anywhere else.)
Players can see the entire map if I share it.
I ran the above test with all Extensions disabled just in case they were causing the problem.
Does anybody know what gives? Is there a different way to hide areas of this map so that players can't see them until they go there?

I'm having this exact same problem, also on the Chult map that we have been using for our hex crawl since our campaign started several years ago. The map was correctly masked at our last session but in today's session, the mask is not visible. However, in mask mode, the outline of the mask is visible.

I'm really hoping that this can be resolved easily. I don't want to do a full FGU data restore, as much prep and playtime has now occurred since this map was last accessed.
Is there is a way to 'recover' or re-enable just the mask?

Thanks for the detailed report. I am able to reproduce using the steps provided and I'm looking into it now.

Has there been a fix identified for this issue yet? About to host my session and wondering when I will be able to share the affected map again... Thank you for your support!

It appears that they fixed it. Thank you, devs!! I can once again create a mask that's surrounded by revealed area.

If the problem I'm experiencing is due to the same core issue, this issue is not resolved for me. On my map, the mask is still not visible and I can only see where the mask used to be by using Mask Mode to see the outline of the mask (see image linked in previous post). I did nothing to alter this image, other than remove it as Public/Shared image so that my players can't see it anymore. The mask was showing correctly one week and then it disappeared before the next session. I'm hoping that this issue can be corrected to allow the mask to correctly show once again without manual intervention.

Can you share a copy of your campaign and the map name and I'll take a look. Thanks.

Couldn't you just draw a secondary mask INSIDE the island (house, castle, what have you) that wouldn't be revealed until explored?

Thanks for taking a look! The map name is "Chult - Player Map". It looks as though there isn't a mask, but if you enter Mask Mode you can see where the mask 'should' be.
I wasn't sure if you wanted just the db.xml or the entire campaign folder, so I zipped up everything here: (link removed)
This campaign has been running almost weekly since ~2021 so forgive the size. :)

Not sure if you were addressing this question to me...
The issue is that the mask was working correctly for this map, and then sometime during the post-v5.1.5 hotfixes the mask 'disappeared'. I had thought that it was lost completely, but thanks to the related issue reported by @Jeeshman I was able to confirm that the outline of the mask is still present. I would like to avoid having to redraw the mask manually and/or work with a compromised map or unresolved issue where this could happen again.
If the devs can figure out what happened, I'm hoping that the mask can be more easily restored and it may possibly resolve an unknown problem so no others have to deal with this inconvenient situation. :)

If I disable lighting, I can see the mask. Is the attached image what you are expecting?

I was just coming back to confirm that! I had completely forgotten that during the last session I had disabled player view and enabled LOS/Lighting to ensure that the map couldn't be viewed by the players without the mask. :o
Thank you so much for fixing the original problem! Sorry for wasting your time today.

No worries. I like a bug that fixes itself.
