Just wondering if speech is supposed to pop up in the image even if options are set to 0, or what the option is to disable them from appearing. Even with the duration set to 1, speech image notifications persist until I delete them. It was mentioned that this is the intended behaviour, is it?66696

Which chat options? I don't see anything that would stop notifications from popping up on the map with these.66706
My question still stands, is this intentional? How do I set notifications to not appear on the active map/image?

They are not notifications, they are chat messages for players. My bad it is not Chat it is Speech: Display location and Speech: Map display duration.
Yes it is intentional.
It is a Per User option so each player can change it to suit themeselves.

I'm not sure whether this is in fact intentional or not.
As noted there is an option Speech: Display location which can be set to chat only, chat and image, or chat and token. Now the thing is all of these options require that the chat bubble being sent to chat has a speaker attached. When a speaker is attached to a chat bubble then the options work as expected, if set to chat only the speech is sent only to chat, when set to image and chat speech is set to chat and a speech bubble appears on the left hand side of the map, and when set to token and chat the speech appears as a bubble over the token (if a token with the name of the speaker exists on the map), as well as chat.
Now, when there's no speaker these options have no effect whatsoever as far as I can tell. Any text sent to chat whether directly typed into the chat box (and CTRL+Enter is used) or when sent there via a text bubble appear on the map and there is not option to turn those off.
So the OP has a valid question. Is it intended that such chat lines should always appear on the image and is there is no option to switch that off (ok that's two questions).

There are several ways that the Story entry can be created. Calendar updates, the slash commands in the Chat box, etc.
I do think they should be configurable as a user like the chat bubbles.
Some of my players were opposed to the chat bubbles but now like them, others keep them turned off. Options are a good thing.

That is expected behavior.
The choice of which token or image to display on is driven by where the speaking actor is located. If the speaking actor does not have a token (or does not have a token contained on a current map image that is open), then it will only display in the chat window.

Indeed, and that is the behaviour that we are seeing. However when there is no speaker the text is always shown on the image and it appears that the options of where to send such speech do not follow the options (in other words it doesn't matter whether you have it set to chat only, chat and image, token and image it always shows in the image as per my screenshot above). Technically this isn't speech of course it's just text sent to chat as in a room description or similar. But I do wonder if it's expected that this will always appear on the image.

See Zach's image.
That is NOT in the chat window. There is a Story entry on the map AND in the chat window.
We currently do not have a way to turn off the Story entries from appearing on the map.
Yes things should always be in the Chat.
Yes things should have the ability to appear on images
But it does feel like we should have the option to turn off the Story entries on the map just like we can turn off the Chat bubbles on the map.

Ah, the boxed text is not speech/chat, and is referred to also as narration text. That is designed to always display on the top-most image window.

Ok, well my next issue is that the message does not disappear even if the duration of map display is set to 1. The following screenshot was taken a minute or so after the message was typed. Is there some way to limit it's duration or it's stuck there until I delete it? I agree with @Anstett that there should be an option to disable them completely.66708

The options for Speech have no effect on this kind of message. As Moon Wizard says above these messages are termed narrations, like room descriptions and such. So if you don't want such messages to appear on the map make sure that they include a speaker and that you set the option to chat only. Otherwise the message will appear on the map and will remain there until cancelled.
The first image below shows what narration looks like and you can see it appears on the map. The second image shows what speech looks like with a speaker, and if set to chat only doesn't appear on the map. Currently there's no option to stop narration text appearing on the map. If this is something you'd like to see add it to the feature request list (link in my signature) and post a link to your suggestion here so others can find and vote on it.

Posted a request to make Narration Text optional.
"To have the Narration text be optional to display on the map image. Bringing this in line with Chat Bubbles, etc. for individuals to turn on/off or have a time limit for display.
Currently Narration test always appears and has to actively be closed to remove from the map image.
Described in this thread:
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?86874-Disable-Speech-Image-Notification/page2"
It is waiting approval.

How does one select a speaker when adjusting the clock?

By default in CoreRPG, calendar output doesn't display on edit, and only outputs to chat when the GM presses the button to output to chat.
If you're running an extension that does other stuff with clock or calendar, you'll have to talk to extension developer not to output as narration text (similar to how clock/date output in CoreRPG does not).
