I've had a long running DND5e campaign. Last week (Friday) when I logged in for my session, I experienced extreme slowness to the point that I could not play. Today I logged into the campaign to see if anything improved and a ton of error messages popped up when loading. Once inside the campaign, it popped a prompt up almost like I was starting a new campaign. I do not see any of the characters, party sheet and combat tracker are empty. What should I do here?

You could try reverting to an earlier version of the campaign database - details here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1207304196/Restore+Campaign+to+an+Earlier+Save

Make sure you backup your current campaign before attempting this.

Also, your chatlog.html should be renamed. It can get very large for a long running campaign and cause slowness when FG tries to open and write to it.

And for backing up your campaign see my sig for a nearly automatic backup solution. Remember the 3-2-1 data rule!

I was able to use a save from 2 weeks ago and get back on line. Character pics were missing on their sheets, but had the records to just add them back. Cleared the chat log also. Thanks for all the help!

Hi all, maybe this needs a new thread since this appears done, but this exact thing just happened to me and my group tonight - other than I didn't have any previous issues a few days ago when I opened the campaign (wasn't slow). Tonight I noticed an error (after checking for updates), but closed it and then loaded the campaign - same as above there were a bunch of error messages, and then it opened a blank campaign (nothing loaded, none of my notes or characters - nothing).

Is this a known issue now (since this is 2 days later than the thread)? I'm really hoping not to have to reload a backup since my last backup was Sep 2025 - doh!

Also, is there a source that describes what's in each campaign file? I can still see some of the recent db.session.xml files, but don't know if they contain all the notes/characters/etc...

***Update*** I tried to reload an earlier save and it kind of works... I have to reload all modules; however, my notes and the characters are now there. That said, as I'm loading the modules I'm getting various errors: example:

[ERROR] Process Data File (DD Dungeon Masters Guide): '.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character.Line 1, position 1.
[WARNING] Could not load module overrides (DD Hoard of the Dragon Queen)
MEASURE: MODULE LOAD - 0.9314026 - D&D Hoard of the Dragon Queen

hopefully this helps.

There have been no general reports of an issue; so the same suggestion applies to use previous save to recover data.

Thanks for the reply... not sure if you saw my update but I did do that but now have errors loading modules. Any ideas on those errors?

Are those official modules from the FG Store or Steam? If so, try deleting them from your FG Data/Vault folder. You can find the file name on the FG store page for the item. Then run an Update and try again.

The "Could not load module overrides" suggests that the XML files in the campaign moduledb directory are also invalid.

If this is the case, then there are issues with the campaign XML files not saving correctly or becoming corrupt - db.xml and the moduledb XML files that track local to the campaign modifications to the data from library modules. Do you have the FG campaign directory being backed up to the cloud in some form (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.)?

Honestly I can't remember which. I'm pretty sure I bought some on FG directly, and some later on Steam. They are all official, though.

No, my files are all stored locally on my PC. I mentioned above that I do have a full FG directory backup from Sept last year, but am hoping not to have to resort to that since there's a lot of progress/notes that are missing. And yes, I realize this is a classic case of why it's dumb not to regularly back up your files!!

*** I just updated the game again and then loaded - so far no errors, so maybe something with the latest update fixed it ***
