View Full Version : PF 1e - Issue with Damage Reduction and untyped damage.

Hello,

I just recently noticed that flat damage reduction (DR: 20) no longer seems to block untyped damage. In the past you used to be able to make a physical weapon with no type (slashing, bludgeoning, piercing) and the damage would bypass flat damage reduction. This was a way to simulate brilliant energy weapon attacks in pathfinder 1e.

Not sure if it was most recent patch, or a few patches ago, but I noticed the issue last week, where untyped damage (1d8+1) was being blocked by DR: 20. This happens in a fresh campaign, with no mods loaded.

Untyped damage should simulate energy attacks or non-physical. Damage reduction should only block physical attacks (slashing, bludgeoning, piercing). I also use the untype damage to simulate pure chaotic energy that should not be blocked by damage reduction.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or FGU is trying something different, but I am hoping it is a bug that can be corrected, as I don't want to flag my untyped damage as a spell, otherwise it would be blocked by constructs. I mainly use the untyped damage in a mod with TDMG, but it seems like since the base ruleset has changed, that needs to be corrected first.

If you need any further examples, let me know.

Thanks

Then just type it as 'spell'. That way it counts as something DR won't be able to block

Then it would be blocked by constructs, as I pointed out above. It used to work, which is why I am asking if this was a change or a bug. I did find away around it with a mod, but I am just curious, as that is not how untyped damage is supposed to work with Damage reduction. But then again, there are few things that should be dealing untyped damage, so probably does not come up often for DMs/players.
