Hey all. Just updated FGU to 5.1.4 and the Web browser on the launcher is not working. It pops up a window with the following:

Update:

This is only happening when I run FGU as administrator. If I launch it normally, the error does not occur

That is helpful information.

Question: Why do you run as Administrator?

Question: Why do you run as Administrator?

I figured it would give any needed permissions without any interruption by prompts.

I am using the admin account on the computer, and also running FGU as Administrator.

I'm basing my comment on the error message from your log I referenced; it says "Access Denied" and "Check filesystem permissions are valid."

Not 100% sure for Win10, but on Win11 you have to go to Settings>Network/Internet>Windows Firewall>Click on the link for Allow an app through firewall>Locate the fantasygrounds file and FGUSteamLauncher.exe file (if using Steam) and make sure the box under the Private column is checked. You may also want to check the Public box.

An easier option may be to go through the Control Panel>Click on the System and Security link in the left sidebar>Choose Allow an app through Windows Firewall under the Windows Defender Firewall section.

I just checked and Unity Playback Engine (FGU) already allowed

Check the permissions in the USERs group. Also you shouldn't need to run in admin mode.

I have the same exact problem.

Windows 11
Admin User

Started immediately after doing the latest update.

Edit:
With "Run this program as an administrator" active on FantasyGrounds.exe, FG front end would be visible, but could not see the opening splash screen (The store advertising), nor the options (quick guide, forums, user manual, discord, etc...).
The FG Front end would appear, then, the crash window would appear (See the first post).

Deactivated "Run this program as an administrator", on FantasyGrounds.exe.
FG loaded as normal, then, immediately began updating. Updater activated, then the FG crash screen appeared.

Removed "Run this program as an administrator" from FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe.
FG launched correctly and the updater completed correctly.

I guess "Run this program as an administrator" has been active for both exe files for years and worked, until the last update.

I don't have time to test in a game, but it appears to be starting ok.

Edit 2:

FG settings, won't let me change the data directory.
Can't change from default data directory.

Indicates "Error: Data path and Application path should not be children of each other. Please change one to an alternate location".

They are not in the same location.

Edit 3

Suddenly, since the last update, FG doesn't know the difference between "Fantasy Grounds" (where the game is installed) and "Fantasy Grounds Data" (the data directory).
I've had this configuration forever.
I changed "Fantasy Grounds data" to "FG Data".
It finally worked.

You should be able to run as your normal user and not need to ever Run as Admin

I realize this.

Apparently, FG has worked with "Run this program as an administrator" for years.
The last update to FG, Windows, or both, seems to have changed this.

I'm ok with not running it as an administrator. Running as an administrator hasn't even been a thought.

I'm getting similar errors. Worked fine last week and several times after the 5.1.4 update. Also Win10 Pro.

I'm seeing strange behavior, which may be related.
I start a game as host, then join the game with a second instance of FGU.
I close the client, then the host.
When closing the host, MS Edge opens with 4 tabs trying to connect to whatever URLs the embedded FGU browser can't reach.
Note that edge is NOT my default browser.

I would double check that MS hasn't "helpfully" reset your defaults for you.

ddavison
February 23rd, 2026, 19:55
Just curious, how do you close the client and host? Do you return to the launcher and then click the X or just kill the app fully from within the campaign?

You should be able to do either -- we just want to be able to reproduce it.

The browser opening 4 tabs outside of FG happened to me once over the weekend - I returned to launcher, and the browser didn't show within the FG launcher.

I'm sure the default browser wasn't set, and FGU shouldn't open an external browser at all. I double checked anyway, since MS is so "helpful".
I close the app using the return to launcher. The browser opens when the app's internal browser remains blank too long. It seems it's shunting the URL load to the OS when it can't handle the call itself.
It's inconsistent. I know the sequence to recreate because it's how I always close the app. I've lost data by exiting straight out, so I never do that any more.
I'll check the logs the next time it happens.
In case it matters, this happened while I was testing ruleset changes. I was opening and closing and reconnecting the client frequently. So maybe adding stress will cause it.
I have more ruleset changes to make, so I'll watch for more clues.

I was having this issue, but I just solved it.

Checked FGUSteamLauncher.exe and it was not set to run as Administrator, so I did not mess with it.
I went to \Fantasy Grounds Unity\FantasyGrounds_Data\UWB directory and changed the properties for UnityWebBrowser.Engine.Cef.exe to run as Administrator.
