So, I updated to the latest release. Then I created a campaign based upon the CoreRPG ruleset. I was able to create the campaign, but after exiting and attempting to launch it, I receive the following errors as recored in the LOG:

Note I'm not loading any extensions with this campaign.

I originally created this CoreRPG campaign to test a problem I was having with images. When I accessed Assets > Images > Campaign to browse to my Campaing\Images folder in an existing campaign, my newly placed JPGs were being dislayed with a question mark surrounded by a dash-line circle. Each of the images is about 1mb in size and even when one of them eventually displayed, it was blank when I opened it as a Map image. The worst of it - when I went to task manager, FGU was listed as consuming 99% of my CPU - even 100% for a few seconds.

So... I'm thinking this problem is much bigger than not being able to properly display or open JPGs in a Campaign\Images folder.

What version is being reported on your launch screen?
If the version is not 5.1.1; then your FG is not updating correctly; and that report is a known issue with v5.0.x loading new ruleset code.

Corect. After I update my Launcher it lists v.5.1.1 (2026-01-28). However, if I exit the launcher and restart it, it lists 5.0.0 (2025-11-12). Weird.

So...what do I need to do to make it be succesffuly updated to v.5.1.1?
Note, I've renamed my CoreRPG.PAK and CoreRPG_2024.PAK and performed an update.

Make sure that you don't have any unpacked rulesets in your rulesets folder; if so delete them. Delete the CoreRPG.pak and CoreRPG_2024.pak files and do an update. Try forcing an update via settings > Troubleshooting.

If you're seeing two different versions like that I'd recommend you check to see if you have two different FG installations - it sounds like your FG updater is updating one installation and your main shortcut is pointing at another.

Alternatively, it could also be your security or backup software restoring the old version for some reason.

I fixed it. No I didn't have 2 installations.

I browsed my Win Registry and found there were still remants of an old install of the FGU demo client, which I uninstalled years ago; cleaned them out. The unistall of the previous FGC demo client did remove unecessary Reg keys.

Anyhow, what I think really fixed it is...I started the Updater and accessed Settings > Advanced and checked my "App Directory" and "Data Directory" settings - both were correct. Just to be sure I clicked the [Save] button and the Launcher had a bit of a fit - the 3 [Uninstall], [Cancel] and [Save] buttons all started to flash repeatedly. So, I let it have fun with its light show for about a minute and shut it down. Next Time I launched it, it reported v5.0.0, so I ran an update and it preceeded to redownload every ruleset, DLC and extension I own - all 191! I was able to make a coffee and drink it before it completed. :D I browsed my data dir aftere and yeah every ruleset, extension and vault item is today's date, so least I know I have a fresh, up to date intstall. So I'm guessing what I did caused the equivalent of a Forced update.

I'm still having an issue with JPG images in my Assets > Images > Campaign folder though. Soon as I browse to that folder, Task Manager is showing close to 100% CPU useage. And the 5 JPGs I copied there (simple 1MB B&W maps), are displayed as question marks enlcosed within a dashed circle ending in an arrow head. Some of them do eventually display as the correct image, but when I open them as map images the image is blank. It doesn't matter which campaign\images folder I place them in. Weird - never seen that before?

If you could post one of the JPGs here for testing that would be helpful. If they are B&W images, they may have been saved as grayscale images. The loader should correct for this, but saving as an RGB image should fix it in the meantime. I would also recommend using Webp if you can. The file sizes are smaller and the quality is comparable.

Thanks for the reply. I did confirm the same problem on the FGU install on my laptop - so 2 different computers. The JPGs are from one of Necrotic Gnomes series of adventures for OSE, so I have no idea how they saved them. I'm going to convert them in Paintshop Pro and see if that resolves it.

Good call on this - thank you.
I only had to do a quick Save As WEBP in Paintshop Pro, for it to warn me that the due to the complexity of the JPG it had to be saved as 24 bit color. The map images are true as can be B&W -not a shade of grey- so big f-up by whoever at NG created the original. Despite having to save the file as such, the WEBP was slightly smaller than the JPG. And more importantely, FGU could immediately recognize it in the Campaign\images folder and open it successfully as a map image. If I use the Paintshop Pro Export function instead, I can save them with a simpler bit depth, which I'll do.
