View Full Version : Removing dice result number

Is there a way to hide the result of the dice when you roll? Not the number shown in the dice icon, but the text number right beside it? I have a manual die roll extension where I can make the players roll what I want, but my number shows up in the dice icon and the text number shows what they actually rolled. Yes, I know this is controversial, but I don't want to control every roll my players make, I just need certain outcomes sometimes to make the story go my way. I'm up front and my players know I do it for storytelling reasons. I just have them black out their dice so they can't see the result. I'd just like to take out the text number right beside the dice in the chat window when they roll.

You don't say what ruleset you are using so that makes it hard to give you a definitive answer.
There is a manual dice roller built into FGVTT and I assume that is available for most rulesets. There is also options to switch off DM dice rolls and switch off show results to clients in (some?) rulesets.

Sorry, my bad. The 5e ruleset. And I know about the manual dice roller for the DM. This is an extension where I can input a number before the player rolls and the dice will come up with the number that I input...BUT my number shows on the dice icon, which is what I want but the text number is what the player rolled. I'm wondering if I can hide the text number that the player rolled so the dice icon only shows my number.

Ask the players to roll in the dice tower? This will hide the roll and the result from the players.

This is more to give the players a sense that they rolled the number instead of them rolling in the dice in the tower and me fudging the story result. You see, I have them black out their dice (again, they know I'm using the extension) and if I did it with my extension but deleting the text number in the chat window, they'd never know if I fudged the number or it was their natural roll. I just need that text number (not on the dice icon, but beside it) to not be there or better yet, show the number that matches the number in the dice icon.

I think you are going to have to re-write the dice manager and maybe the chat manager in your extension to only have it show the text you want. It will be different than the default 5E chat text. I haven't done anything myself with either of those, so don't know specifics, but think it should be possible.

And I wish I knew how to do that. That is beyond my expertise :) This was an extension graciously made by someone else.

If you want to learn how, you could grab my (free) extensions (in my sig below). Both Hidden Death Saves and Redacted Table Fields do that sort of thing (intercepting the message and modifying it before sending it). Hope that helps!

I'll take a look at that and see if it makes any sense to me. I really am out of my league here when it comes to this stuff, but thank you!

Also, if you're not familiar with the amazing Requested Rolls (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/273/view) extension (also free, by mccartysr), I think it does what you want.
It lets you prompt PCs to roll (and you can set the DC). It's a little complex, but it's incredibly powerful and useful. There's an option to hide the roll. I'm not sure if it hides it from the roller (like the tower), but it probably does.

Alright, I'll check that out. Hopefully, it will do some of what I want. What I want is a combination of the dice icon in the chat window showing what I input (not the dice itself because the roll is physics based for how the die lands and we can't make the number come up on the 3d dice) and NOT showing the result of what was really rolled, so the players don't know that I input a predetermined roll in first. Let me run this by you since FG has come such a long way with Unity and all and tell me if this is feasible. Could the numbers on the 3d dice be blurred out and when the dice land, the number that I predetermine come into focus? This would have to work in tandem with the extension I have already, of course.

Ah, I see. I don't think RR supports anything like that exactly. But if you think that extension is close, you can post in its forum - the developer takes requests for new features all the time. Good luck!

It is close. The blurred out dice numbers might not be feasible but if I could get the text number beside the dice icon to match the actual number in the dice icon, I'd be golden.

Well, darndest thing. I updated FG, opened the extension and tried it and now the text number matches the number in the dice icon. So problem solved. Now I just have my players black out their dice and viola! They never know when I put in a specific number in and when I don't.
