This is from 18 days ago but haven't seen anyone else post about it here that I found and it seems like kind of a big deal.

D&D Beyond has announced they are ending development of Sigil. The writing was on the wall when they laid off everyone earlier, so this is an announcement a lot of us were expecting, but it's the final nail in the coffin.

I remember being scared of a VTT with the full force of Hasbro and Wizards behind it and what they could do, like locking every D&D Beyond subscriber behind their platform, especially knowing it's the most popular ttrpg in the world, and the bulk of business for vtt's like FGU. But, it looks like they weren't patience enough, or not willing to actually pay the money to invest in it, or both. Once again, the suits at Hasbro have no idea what they have with D&D, nor how to use it.

And to be clear, I'm sad for the developers who I'm sure worked hard on it and it looked like they were making a cool tool, but not too sad that the suits couldn't accomplish their final goals, which was of course to make another walled garden, a virtual version of their failed OGL plans.

This is old news. Forum post about it months back.

Not quite. The layoff etc was months ago. But at that time Sigil was still being "developed" but just by one or two devs. Over the past few months they released maybe a handful of 3D models (I remember talk of a dragon).

This is the official announcement on October 24, 2025 that they have officially ended all development and that Sigil will be shutdown forever at the end of October 2026.

Yea, I think I linked to the ENWorld post discussing it back when they announced the sunsetting.

Maybe I am in the future. ;)

Haha ya, I get that. I remember a lot of posts those months ago when they laid off everyone that said something like Sigil is done, but WotC hadn't quite admitted it at the time. They said things like we're reducing devs and going into maintenance mode, etc.

But this is them finally admitting they're done.

WotC has a bad track record of most tech ventures. MasterTools anyone? :)

I don't know why, but yea, they are horrible at software development. I'm guessing it is management style. They need to bring in and trust some who knows what they are doing. I suspect its that second thing they never get right.
