View Full Version : Savage Rifts - Burster Fiery Aura effects - why some include Armor +4 or Toughness +4

Some of the effects included in Fiery Aura Power have Armor +4 or Toughness +4. Where do those come from? I can't find any text under Fiery Aura, Protection or Power Modifiers (SWADE players guide) that suggests a way the Armor +2 or Toughness +2 (on raise) would increase to +4.

I don't think so... FG has put a bunch of effects on this power. Having them there signals players that they can use them; but I don't see anywhere in the rules that supports those effects being there. So, I am questioning whether the FG conversion is correct. I don't believe those effects should be there; unless someone can find a rule that says otherwise (my table couldn't).

I checked Protection power in FG, which Fiery Aura is based on. Here, I see effects for Armor and Toughness +4 and +6, but there is nothing in the power description explaining how one could achieve higher than +2, so why are those effects there? See attached.

Is this assuming Mega Power and/or ritual?

Power Modifiers? I don't know about Rifts, but in places like Fantasy Companion some of the Power Modifiers you can choose can provide bonuses beyond the base power and having the effects available, even for characters that can't use those modifiers, is very useful. It's normally up to the player to recognize which ones they shouldn't be using, though (or that's how it is at my table, anyway :D).

EDIT: Was there a companion or add-on book for Rifts that might have added those effects? If so then it's still probably easier to keep the base powers updated to the add-on standard than to try to "overwrite" the base power (especially since they don't really do that, you'd just see two versions of the power and have to make sure you select only the right one for the books you are using if you also had the add-on book).

It is explained in the description of the Power.

"As an Innate ability, with one Psionics roll, a Burster can activate both damage field* and protection* together with the fire trapping. This ability costs no ISP, but additional modifiers may be used for additional ISP as normal. For the duration, melee attacks deal an extra 1d6 damage of the same type."

The effects are for the player using additional ISP when activating Fiery Aura.

It is a combination of Damage Field and Protection.

Thanks. Referring to Mega Powers version of Protection it becomes clearer how different effect possibilities could come into play.
