View Full Version : Extension for flavorful names

I created an extension (for 5E, but it probably would work for any ruleset) that works kind of like the code that appends a random # on duplicate NPCs in the Combat Tracker, but instead of (well, in addition to) a #, it prefixes the name with a random value from a table.
Tables can be specific to the creature (e.g. "Flavorful Zombie Names") or to the creature type ("Flavorful Undead Names"), or just from generic "Flavorful Names".
Purely cosmetic.
If anyone's interested, I'll add it to the forge (free of course). I only have a small set of names so far; others can be created by adding a simple one-column table (per creature or creature type).

I think folks would be interested, NPC Flavors is a popular extension and yours seems similar: FG Forge - View Item (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/290/view) Though if your uses tables inside the campaign, it would be easier to update/modify.
Any chance of extending it for CoreRPG rulesets? I'd be interested in it for my ruleset :)

Thanks, I didn't know about that extension (and my search didn't find it).
The purpose is identical, but I guess the approach is different. Mine uses tables you can add or edit, which might make it easier to get the vibe you want.
I like how Tideturner's replaces the appended #, mine just adds a prefix.
I'll take a look at making it work with the Core rules; it does check the creature type (e.g. Zombie is Undead), which might be 5E, but that's only a convenience.

Not that I know your code, but maybe a generic version could look for tables with specific names? Such as "Flavor Fiend" for a creature type of Fiend. or in my case "Flavor Creature" or "Flavor Minor" That way whatever the creature type is, it looks for a corresponding table.

Yep, that's what it does.
If first checks for a table called "Flavorful {Creature} Names" (e.g. Flavorful Zombie Names),
then if that's not found, it checks using the type (at least for 5E) "Flavorful {Type} Names" (e.g Flavorful Undead Names),
then as a last resort it will use "Flavorful Names".
If a table isn't found, it outputs a message indicating you can create it (once per table per session, it doesn't spam it).

Seeing this I jumped right to it... sadly says not available yet.
Likely just a processing time thing but will definitely want to try this out in my 2e game.

Yeah, it still says STATUS: Inactive for me. Not sure why. It's kind of tricky. I did set it to Live, and it was approved. Not sure if there's something else I need to do, or just wait...

Check your Manage Craft. The line item should look like this:
65583
Also make sure you are seeing this on the Manage Build details page:
65584
The key is that you need to make sure you have it listed and that the channel is Live.

Hi,
looking forward to trying this. Personally I'd much prefer the number to stay, this is especially useful when used face to face with miniatures, as i can still attach tiny number beads to the mini for easy identification, but still have the flavour name for immersion, if that makes sense?
Cheers,
Simon

It does show Status with a check, and Live on the Manage Craft page.
But it has the red X on the Manage Build page, and the Manage Item page has Status INACTIVE.
I have no idea how to list it though.

Got it, it's live now.
I had to click on the word "LIST" under the red X...

Yea, that's not intuitive to me either :)
It's showing for me now.
