View Full Version : Grid squares, pace and blast radius

Hey,

Can someone help me understand distance vs. blast templates, when it comes to the grid?

As I understand it, 1 grid square = 1 tabletop inch = 2 yards.
Is that how it's supposed to work?

And that is why a Large Blast Template (12 yards diameter) takes up 6 grid squares, as shown below.

Also shown, is a pointer, a character targeting a goblin, and a movement request.
Are these using different measurements than the the LBT?

Just from looking at it, I would allow that move, since the character has a pace of 6.
And also, if the character shoots (12/24/48) from 12 grid squares away, the shot is considered short range.
But if he shoots from 13 grid squares away, it is considered medium range.

So my immediate take is that everything is using 1 grid square = 1 yard, bot AoE (blast, cone) is using 1 grid = 2 yard.

Or am I missing something here?
If there's a discrepancy, my preference here would be to just let 1 grid square = 1 yard, even for the AoE.

I don't know the Savage Worlds ruleset that well but according to my research the Large Blast Template is 6" in diameter, the medium 4" and the small 2". Which is what you are seeing; so I'm not sure where the 12" that you are talking about is coming from. You are correct that the grid is 1 unit equals 1 square (you can see this by unlocking any map and clicking on the grid icon to see the grid set up for the map).

Hi Zacchaeus,

You're probably right.

I should have specified that we're playing Pathfinder for Savage Worlds, and in that rulebook there's this:

I don't know the base SWADE ruleset, or if it differs?

You are correct initially and the book and the system are right. A square is 2 yards, so 12 yards would be 6 squares. The targets affected column, if you didnt know, which you may, is when youre not using a map and you need to know how many enemies get hit.

Small - 2 grid squares
Medium - 4 grid squares
Large - 6 grid squares.

As for range, you are once again correct. Up to the 12 is short, 13-24 is medium and above that to 48 is long and 49+ is out of range.

Pathfinder is the same as SWADE.
In SWADE, everything is in inches where 1 inch = 2 yards.
Pace 6 moves 12 yards.
Just count and think in inches (if not using a grid) or squares (if using a grid).
It's better to not do math. There's no need to do math. Whatever the number is, that's the number of squares or inches.
The table you show is for narrative scenes, no maps or minis, where people think in real world distances and terms.
When story telling, it sounds weird to say "As you sprint down the ally, the grenade detonates behind you, blasting everything in 6 inches. You avoid it by mere inches."

Hey all,

Ok, thanks.

So there's no discrepancy, just sometimes inch/grid unit is used (as in pace) and sometimes yard is used (as in LBT and bow range)?

I was just confused as to what meant what.

I'll trust that FG does the math correctly :)
