Link on the Forge. (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/2367/view) The core ruleset is free and it has a small tutorial that you can access on the start screen.
We are glad to announce that we have released the fully playable beta version 1.4.3 of the Revolution D100 ruleset for the Fantasy Grounds VTT. The ruleset is entirely free, although it requires a Fantasy Grounds license, which is not free. It is NOT based on the Basic Roleplaying ruleset for Fantasy Grounds.
Before presenting our ruleset, we wish to highlight two important points.
Point one, the purpose of our work is not that of providing just another character sheet for virtual tabletop users. Our goal is to help new players with the “system mastery” needed when running combat encounters with a detailed system like Revolution D100. The computer will do the numerically complex parts and most of the bookkeeping for you, lowering the bar for new players to learn the system and be competitive in a battle. It is more than just a custom sheet.
Point two, we have thought about the business model that should back this kind of product, and giving out everything for free to promote the game is not viable. Not for a small publisher, and not with the margins that RPG publishers make on their products. This means that some products of the line will be for pay. We plan to keep this core module free if possible, but other non-vital functionalities might appear behind a paywall. It also means that we will release only for platforms for which the cost of development and the return of investment is viable.
What is in the Revolution D100 ruleset for Fantasy Grounds?
The ruleset allows you to define player characters and non-player characters for Revolution D100 in the FGU (Fantasy Grounds Unity) VTT platform. It manages the growth of your characters by incrementally adding new skills and powers to them. Most important of all, the ruleset:
• Manages the execution of conflicts and combat encounters via the combat tracker tools of FGU, keeping track of the expenditure of Readiness for every action and adjusting the initiative order, and doing the bookkeeping of Effort Points for you.
• Manages the result of each non-combat and combat exchange by identifying the attacking and defending party of each opposed roll and, once the attacker has made its roll, presenting the defender with a user-friendly, complete interface that allows a choice among the available options. Once the defender has selected a reaction and rolled, the system determines the winner of the opposed roll (which is not the same as just determining if a percentile roll succeeded) and if the exchange implies applying combat effects, it guides the winning player in picking an option among those appropriate to the context and its level of success.
Why do we think this is so important?
The above features are those that usually look too complex to those who are unfamiliar with the system and may scare off new players. Automating them and helping players navigating them is therefore an important aid, more valuable than anything else you might find on a computer-assisted platform. We believe that they provide value to players, or more specifically that they help to unleash the value that is already in the game.
Revolution D100 uses an active defense model and relies heavily on opposed rolls. This means that the tools usually provided by default by Fantasy Grounds and other VTT, conceived for the one-roll combat exchange found in D20, are not adequate to it, or to other games derived from the classic Basic Roleplaying ruleset. By introducing a generalised opposed roll / active defence mechanism that applies everywhere it is needed, we have enhanced the functionalities of the excellent FGU platform
Where do we go from now?
The next steps are the addition of new features (for instance, PC and NPC wizards to help you create characters) to the core. Some of these might appear as premium features, others will not.
But can we use this for other games?
The rules of Revolution D100 are open. With the arrival of Red Moon Rising they are moving from the OGL to the ORC to be even more free.
However, unlike rules, computer software is copyrightable, and our software *is* copyrighted, and is not released as open. You cannot copy, fork or otherwise use our ruleset for other games without our permission.
Cloud100 games is instead available to dealing with other publishers, or developers of VTT products for similar games, to work together on future versions of this and other products. Making software products [professionally] has a cost, and sharing this burden, in a context where you can create a common platform which powers different games, can be an effective way of keeping costs under control.
We have not spoken to other publishers yet, but might do so in the future. If you are another publisher or a developer, professional or amateur, of VTT software, and you are interested in cooperation, we are open to proposals on a mutually beneficial basis.
