Hiya,

I apologize if this has been asked before. I looked around and found so many audio questions and answers but it was a bit exhausting and I couldn't find what i was looking for.

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to share an audio handout. Like since I tend to run more modern era and sci-fi RPGs sometimes I want may players to come across and audio log or recording as a handout. Would I still need to go through the VLC method or discord method or is there just a simple option I'm not seeing that lets me just give them an audio handout in Fantasy Grounds?

Thanks in advance!

If you're not using the FG Syrinscape integration, you'll need to use a way of piping audio to your audio communication platform.

If you're using the FG Syrinscape integration, and the players all have the Syrinscape web player open, you can just play the Syrinscape sound from the "play" button, or an FG link.

Is this still the case? I've been looking into this for my new game today and I'm really confused by the fact that the program offers a method to upload sounds from my local filesystem, but it seems like it is only possible to play those sounds back to myself, on my own machine? Am I missing something because I don't understand the purpose of playing a sound back for myself through FantasyGrounds when I could just play it from my filesystem if I wanted to hear it privately?

FG does not offer a way to upload sound files. It allows an integration with Syrinscape, and Syronscape allows local sounds to be played to multiple listeners.

But nothing has changed in this capability in FG since this was posted 5-6 weeks ago.

The Kenku FM bot on Discord + VLC method is a bit tricky to set up, but is very powerful. With it installed, I can play music on VLC, sound effects from Tabletop Audio, and, at the same time, a room ambiance in Syrinscape or youtube for example. Try it, you surely won't regret it.

Thanks for the reply but I am not interested in asking my players to open up an entire web browser or other program just so I can play one sound effect once every 8 sessions or so. And definitely have negative interest in subscribing to Syrinscape (or just adding new sub fees to my life in general) so I'll never be using that.

For now since we are still using Discord and haven't moved entirely to Revolt yet, I've figured out I can just use the Discord Soundboard to do what I need by uploading the sound effect immediately prior to running the session where I need it, then delete it from Discord after the session. I was looking into using the FOSS Soundux to pipe sounds into my Discord input, but unfortunately Discord's noise suppression kills any sound effect since it's not a human voice. I may try doing noise filtering at the hardware level next for this method to work better.

Considering I can already upload images and text and rulesets to FantasyGrounds and have it auto-transferred to my players when they load in, hopefully someday the program will be able to play the sound effect of a hammer striking metal or something like that without having to go through several different subscription services. :D

The audio thing has always been a challenge. It often involves many factors such as localized security issues, potential licensing, cost vs usage, audio setup differences between OS and hardware, etc. It's also inherent of localized computing as opposed to web based. And there are likely other things I am not aware of. Smiteworks would also likely have to at least provide a generic library of base sounds which would incur costs, maintenance, troubleshooting different user's sound setups, etc. However, it would be nice. It's a thing where all players and the host would need access to a sound database, which is what Syrinscape does for consistency, licensing, accessibility, and sound file hosting.

With Kenku FM, you don’t have to ask your players to do anything, the Kenku bot will automatically streams the sound directly into your Discord channel. You can use any audio or sound effects you like. Nothing to pay, you don't have to use Syrinscape.

With Kenku FM

I'm trying to avoid adding bots to my servers too, especially since we're trying to move away from Discord ASAP. Thx for the advice though.
