View Full Version : DM/GM Layer???

I wanted to add a DM/GM layer to a map, and I feel like I'm doing something wrong. When I google this I get:

first load a map into the map window, then click the "Layers" icon at the top to select the "DM Layer" from the dropdown menu, and then place your GM-specific images or tokens onto this layer

I don't see a "dropdown menu" after clicking Layer in the edit screen. I also cannot find a video on how to do this. I see pictures of maps with a DM/GM layer, and it looks to be just a wall layer? Plus, how do you rename a layer?

This is probably something obvious and stupid my old brain is not seeing. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Was that an AI response? Don't trust that Info.
What do you want to add. Map Icons, or room numbers?

Any layer you add from assets you can show or hide from the image sidebar.

You can add room numbers in FG now with the text option. Create a folder to put them all in and set them to gm only.

If you create an image layer in say Gimp or PS save it with alpha and add it to the FG campaign. then click on the layer control at the top and drop the image from your assets, align it, lock it, set it GM only.

Just double click on the name of the layer to change it.

Unfortunately, that doesn't cover the layer visibility buttons.

Huh, I assumed... well it should...

Here's the info (in brief) that should be there:
The Layer sub-Window of the Image Control Panel for an image with 2 layers, one that is a GM/DM layer and the other that is player visible.
65394
Note that to the right of the Layer name are several columns of items, in order (left to right) they are:
Shared: this indicates if the layer is visible to the players (assuming lighting and LOS conditions are met)
Visibility: this indicates in the GM/DM can see the image on this layer
Use Walls: enable LOS occluders on this layer
Use Lights: enable lights on this layer
Lock: prevent this layer from being moved or modified

I am trying create maps like in the new Starfinder 2e Society modules. They have the map layer with map/key layer. The buttons on the bottom of the control panel only allow paint, FX etc.. How are they adding a additional map layer?
I like how it utilizes one map for the players and GM.
I am converting the Iron Gods from Pathfinder 1e to 2e using Github: a series of dice based events website.

I'm not familiar with the Starfinder ruleset, but usually if you unlock an image, on the layer tab there is a "Shared" Column if you click the icon for the individual layer, you can cycle between the default "Shared with Players" to "GM only". That's the setting you are looking for for room numbers, secret doors, etc.

Have the main map layer and the DM layer in your campaign/images folder. Add the main map to images by opening it from Assets/campaign and selecting create map record. Open asets/campaign and find your DM layer and drag and drop it onto the open main image. This will create a new layer which you can then hide from the players.

(the DM layer needs to be .webp or some other format with an alpha channel; .webp is preferred).

As mentioned by Zacchaeus - drag/drop an image from the assets, or you can use the stamp tool. See Part 2 - Layers Tab here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/3014393864/Image+Workspace+Walkthrough+Series+by+Smiteworks
