View Full Version : Disabling New "Roll Anywhere" Feature?

It used to be that rolls were only counted as rolls if they were dropped on chat, a target, or the dice tower.
Now it seems that dropping a die anywhere counts as a roll.
That's annoying in a couple ways - for one, a lot of my players and myself were in the habit of just throwing a die "into the void" if you pick up a roll you don't mean to make, and now that rolls instead of cancelling the roll. It also makes it harder to tower rolls or roll on a specific target - previously, if you "missed" dropping the die correctly, no roll would result and you could try again. Now instead you get an incorrect roll (not towered/not against the correct target).
All this to say, is there an option to turn this "feature" off?

No, there isn't.
When you drag/drop onto the dice tower or onto a token on the map both will light up when you are in the correct position to drop the dice (I think that's always been the case).

That's a little frustrating, honestly - the entire session I ran today was plagued with dice rolls not going where they were supposed to.
It feels like in addition to this change, the level of precision needed to actually drop a die on a target has increased. Maybe it's just a learning curve but it felt like every third roll or so was off the mark.

You can hold the Alt key to prevent rolls from being broadcast as well.

I'm not sure any more precision is needed or not since I and my players rarely use drag and drop onto a token. Certainly dropping onto the dice tower is common and we haven't seen any issues doing that since the change over the past. I and my players tend to use targeting and then make attack, damage, saving throw etc rolls from either the character sheet (players) or the CT (Me). The only drag/drop rolls I think that we make are those which would be out of turn ones, like an NPC needs to make a saving throw to see if they lose a condition.
So it may be that your players need to make slight changes to the way they do things (either use targeting and roll from their character sheet; or if they want to use drag/drop do so into the CT rather than onto a token on the map.

Seems like a setting the GM should manage, to be honest. Turn on or off for the session.

There is a feature request to make the current behaviour an option that can be toggled on and off:
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/featurerequests/featurerequests.php?titlesearch=Dice%20Roll%20in%2 0Chat%20Box%20Option
You can vote it if you feel that it would be a better solution

I don't mean to be rude, but "your players just need to learn an entirely different way of doing their rolls than what they've done since they started using Fantasy Grounds" is not, perhaps, the best way to sell someone on a new feature.
Muscle memory is strong, especially when you've been doing something the same way for a few years.

Yes; not, perhaps, the best wording I could have used. It will take more precision, perhaps, than they are used to but it's still a valid method of making rolls. What I was really trying to convey was that there are alternative (and arguably better) methods of making rolls, But I understand that changing the way you do things can be problematic.

Voting for this. Personally I'd like to disable this for my games.
