View Full Version : Fantasy Ground Updater encounters errors, no matter what I do

So Fantasy Grounds was working without issue for me until about a month ago. The update refused to install, showed me the happy error image I've attached, and auto-closed FG. Tried to start again, refused to start.
Since then, I've tried a few things;

uninstall & reinstall
cleared registry & reinstall
verified firewall exceptions (all good)
dropped all firewall protections
wiped my computer, reinstalled windows 10, start over

Nothing has made a lick of difference. I'm always met with the red exclamation point graphic.
I was in contact with support, and they've referred me here. I've attached the logs I have available, and put my hopes in you folks.
The lives of countless fictional people lie in the balance, please help!

Please provide the Unity logs as detailed here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?85653-FGU-won-t-update&p=749620&viewfull=1#post749620

These ones, right?

That's giving a similar (potentially the same) issue as mentioned in the next post in that thread here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?85653-FGU-won-t-update&p=749963&viewfull=1#post749963

Interestingly, both you and the user in that thread are both running AMD Radeon HD graphics cards, slightly different versions, but probably using the same base driver code. This could well be an issue with the graphics card drivers. First step would be to make sure you're running on the latest graphics card drivers - and, if this doesn't help, try some older drivers.

For testing purposes, if your computer has another graphics device (e.g. an Intel integrated GPU), try disabling the AMD Radeon graphics card and just running with the Intel GPU - if you don't get the FG issue, then that will firmly point towards the AMD Radeon graphics side.

Doing some research, it appears to be a Unity issue with AMD Radeon cards: https://issuetracker.unity3d.com/issues/min-spec-directx-11-regression-in-unity-6-dot-1-failed-to-create-gpufence

I've passed details on to the FG devs.

As @Trenloe mentioned, this looks like a Unity engine issue which they have not released a fix for.
Based on the reports, it appears to be tied to the combination of Windows 10, AMD graphics card, and DX 11 graphics library.
I was hoping that updating graphics driver would pull in a fix on the graphics card side.

If that hasn't worked, can you try this set of steps to see if it works?
* Click Windows Start button.
* Search for "Run" system program; and start it.
* In the dialog that pops up; try this command "C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FGUpdaterEngine\FGUpdaterEngine.exe -force-d3d12"

If this works. this command line could be used until Unity fixes the issue.
"C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FGUpdaterEngine\FGUpdaterEngine.exe -force-d3d12"
"C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FantasyGrounds.exe -force-d3d12"

Other fixes are more involved, since they would involve upgrading to Windows 11 or replacing graphics card.

In the end this didn't resolve, but I want to thank you both very much for trying.

If it changes in future, I will be sure to update this post.

Do you have the logs after you tried the DX12 flag? I want to see if the error message is different.

Thanks,
