Conan: The Road of Kings
In the days when Conan was King over Aquilonia, the sullen man—once a thief, a reaver, and a slayer—remembered his rugged homeland of Cimmeria with a rare fondness.
By his decree, all Aquilonian troops withdrew from the northern lands: from Cimmeria, from Vanaheim, from Asgard. And in that age of shifting borders and fading empires, new opportunities rose for those bold—or desperate—enough to seize them.
Gold glitters in the cities of the south, while in the north the wind howls over untamed frontiers, hiding treasures older than the memory of men. Kings rise and fall with the throw of dice made of bone. Sorcerers weave black dreams from towers of glass and basalt. Ships heavy with plunder sail from the coasts of Shem to the isles of the Western Ocean. The Road of Kings winds through them all.
Once, Conan strode this road, from penniless sellsword to the crowned ruler of the greatest kingdom of the Hyborian Age.
Do you, too, have the strength, the cunning, and the iron will to walk...
THE ROAD OF KINGS
THE OPENING SCENARIO
The Scarlet Lions
Hired by Aquilonian officer Hadrathas, you are to cross the mountains into Cimmeria in search of the lost Scarlet Lions legion, led by Gaius, son of a powerful lord. By King Conan’s decree, no Aquilonian troops may enter the north—so the task falls to you. Whispers speak of the White-Eyed Wolf—perhaps a warlord, perhaps a monster, perhaps only a myth—stirring beyond the border. Find the Legion, bring them home… or bring back proof of their fate.
How This Campaign Works
Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, where adventures often flow together into one long, continuous story, Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of plays more like a series of Conan short stories. Each session—or short arc—is its own episode, beginning and ending in different places, sometimes with little or no connection to the last.
In Media Res: An adventure might start halfway through the action—you’ve already taken the job, the ship is already at sea, the swords are already drawn.
Sudden Endings: Some stories end abruptly. The villain might escape, the treasure might be lost, or the adventure may close on a dramatic cliffhanger.
Fortunes Rise and Fall: Gold, ships, or titles earned in one adventure might be gone by the next—spent, stolen, gambled away, or abandoned between stories. Yes this means equipment and coin you've gathered may not be available when the next adventure begins. Your character's wits and advancement will be the focus.
Shifting Locales: The next adventure might begin half a world away from the last, with no need to track every mile of the journey.
Think of it like stepping into a collection of Conan tales, with the same characters dropped into new, dangerous, and thrilling situations each time. The backdrop for our campaign is the time of King Conan’s withdrawal of Aquilonian troops from the northern lands—a period full of shifting power, lawless frontiers, and countless chances for fortune and glory.
The World of Conan
The Hyborian Age is a time of splendor and savagery, where the line between civilization and barbarism is thin and shifting.
Magic is Rare and Perilous: Sorcery exists, but it is never safe—its price is often blood, sanity, or the soul itself.
Life is Cheap: Wars, plagues, famine, and the ambitions of the powerful keep death close at hand.
Loyalty is Scarce: Friends may turn foe, alliances are fleeting, and trust must be earned through action.
No Shining Saints: This is not a world of noble heroes. The bold, the cunning, and the lucky thrive. Deeds—not declarations—define one’s worth.
Justice Comes from Unexpected Places: Greed and cruelty are not without consequence, but retribution may come from unlikely or self-serving hands.
A Dark and Adult World: Themes of violence, treachery, lust, and moral ambiguity are ever-present.
In this age, you survive not because the world is fair, but because you are strong enough—or clever enough—to seize what you can before the wheel turns.
What I Expect from Players
Collaboration Over Competition: Show up ready to work with the GM and your fellow players to tell a great story. Neither the GM nor the other players are your adversaries.
Maturity in Setbacks: Things will go wrong—plans will fail, fortunes will be lost, and sometimes your character will be outmatched. Handle these moments with maturity and see them as opportunities for drama and story.
Respect for Boundaries: This setting contains dark and sometimes disturbing themes. It may not be for everyone, and that’s okay. If you choose to play, respect the sensibilities of others and know where the lines are.
An Ensemble Cast: There are no main characters here. Your hero is one part of a larger ensemble. I may weave in elements from your character’s background, but they may not end the way you expect. There is no single “Conan” in our story—every character matters.
What You Can Expect from Me as GM
We’re Learning Together: I love this system, but I haven’t had many chances to run it. While I know the world and the tone well, some rules may be new to me. I’ll be patient with you if you’re patient with me.
Our Stories, Not Just Mine: I focus on creating situations and opportunities for our story to unfold. Because this game is episodic, you might not be able to chase every lead right away—but if you let me know something interests you, there’s always the chance your paths will cross with it again.
Fairness and Spotlight Time: I work to ensure everyone has moments to shine. Characters in Conan can vary wildly in style and strengths—some may seem “overpowered” in certain situations, but the system is balanced in broader ways, not by making every character equally strong in every scene.
