View Full Version : New Dice Aesthetics/Behavior

Hello!

My group played our first game since the 4.8 update last night. We noticed some peculiarities with the new dice behavior - not sure if they are intentional or not, but it would be nice to see if they could be changed:

1. While your own dice stay within the confines of your screen, bouncing off the "walls," other players' dice very often roll off the edges of the screen, frequently landing there unseen. This appears to be new behavior with the new dice implementation. For my group, being able to see everyone's rolls, the fun anxiety of watching a 20 turn to a 2 at the last second (or vice versa), was great in the old implementation. Now we just wait for the results to show up in the chat window because the dice have left the screen. Is there any way to return to having all dice stay inside the screen?

2. The visual display of other players' dice rolling also appears tethered to where my chat box is inside the app, regardless of where they roll it on their screen. When I had my chat box in the lower right hand corner, all rolls from other players were confined to the right half of the screen - I don't know that any of them ever rolled to the left of the chat box. When I moved the chat box to the left side, player dice appeared all over the screen again. As the GM, I prefer my chat box in the lower right so I can make my Combat Tracker (we're running PF2e) the full height of the screen on the left, but the dice rolling only on the right (and, per the above, mostly off the screen) was weird.

Again, not catastrophic changes, but it sure would be nice to see all the dice again when they roll. Thank you!

The first issue will be caused by different screen sizes. I just tested this out by differing the screen sizes on my first and second monitor and dice thrown on the larger screen disappeared off the edge of the smaller one as you noted. I'm not sure that anything can be done about that since I assume that the dice will roll to the edge of the larger screen and it would be difficult to determine which of the players or DM had the smallest screen and restrain the dice to those values.

I can replicate your second issue so I assume that whilst the dice are no longer imprisoned in the dice tray the dice tray still has some effect in determining where the dice get thrown. That's probably unintended.

Both of these are unintended, I'll take a look and see what happened.

Awesome - thank you!

The bit about dice rolling off the screen for some users has been there for a while (even when it was constrained to the Chat box).

I saw it from one of my players, and I just assumed it was due to the screen resolution difference.

Just mentioning that it's not necessarily new behavior, just probably not something that was seen a lot previously.

Both of these should now be fixed as of 4.8.1
